Chapter 109
Chapter 109
“You should find a grandmother for me again to look after you,” Yin Hui stood behind her grandfather, helping him massage his head while teasing.
Yin Yong laughed, and his shoulders shook, “Nonsense. At my age, it would be laughable to bring a grandmother in.”
Yin Hui responded, “In any case, you’re not allowed to drink anymore. Drinking is a risk for stroke. I always tell Xiao Hong about all your adventurous stories. I wouldn’t want him to come to visit you when he’s grown, only to see a bedridden old man lying crooked and cross-eyed.”
Yin Yong agreed, “Alright, I’ll listen to Ah Hui. From now on, I’ll drink at most one bowl.”
Yin Hui was satisfied with this answer.
During breakfast, Yin Hui also called Yin Lang over. However, she noticed that even though her grandfather treated Yin Lang with some affection, there was still a layer of separation between them.
Perhaps her grandfather was still concerned about Yin Lang’s status or had invested all his efforts in grooming Yin Wen, not wanting any estrangement to occur between Yin Wen and Yin Lang because of the latter.
“Today, we have some guests coming over. We two siblings should talk, I will find you later,” Yin Hui suggested.
After breakfast, Yin Yong left.
Yin Hui brought Yin Lang back to the main hall. She sat on the veranda and watched as Yin Lang performed a set of martial arts. Despite only practicing for three or four months, the young man’s figure was upright, and his punches were swift and powerful.
“How do you feel, Chang Feng?” Yin Hui asked.
Chang Feng replied, “Young Master Lang shows a talent for martial arts.”
At that moment, Uncle Zhou arrived.
Yin Hui then asked Chang Feng to instruct Yin Lang, while she went to the hall to talk with Uncle Zhou.
Yin Hui had met Uncle Zhou on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year, and that day he had come uninvited.
“Is there something you’d like to discuss?” Yin Hui asked in a low voice, with Jinzhan stationed at the door to keep watch.
Uncle Zhou nodded and said, “Previously, you asked me to secretly have the Young Master followed. I’ve done as you requested. However, the Young Master is always accompanied by two guards who stick to him like shadows. Both of them were personally chosen by the Old Master, and their skills are not necessarily inferior to those of Master Chang Feng by the Third Master’s side. The people I sent to follow them were detected several times, but luckily, they managed to escape before the Young Master caught them. Madam, if you have no urgent business, I suggest we discontinue the surveillance. There’s a risk that one day, if the Young Master catches someone and drags them before the Old Master, we won’t be able to explain ourselves.”
Yin Hui felt a sinking feeling in her heart. She always remembered Liao Qiuniang’s death, which had happened during this summer. In her past life, both mother and daughter had died on the same day. That’s why she had arranged for Uncle Zhou to secretly follow Yin Wen. In case he had any malicious intentions towards Liao Qiuniang, her people could intervene in time.
However, she had underestimated the guards around Yin Wen.
Uncle Zhou’s concerns were valid. If her grandfather found out she had someone following Yin Wen, she would have no way to explain it.
“Then, let’s stop following,” she said.
“Madam, are you afraid that he will plot against the Young Master (Yin Lang)?” Zhou Shu guessed.
Yin Hui had no choice but to nod in agreement.
Zhou Shu reassured her, “Don’t worry. The Young Master (Yin Wen) is very astute. If he wanted to harm someone, he wouldn’t do it in Pingcheng.”
Yin Hui pretended to breathe a sigh of relief to prevent Uncle Zhou from worrying further.
After he left, Yin Hui was ready to leave.
Yin Yong hurried over, asking, “Didn’t you say you’d return after lunch? What’s the rush for you to leave now? I have guests to entertain.”
Yin Hui smiled and replied, “I wanted to go for a stroll in the cool weather. If I wait too long, it’ll get hot.”
Yin Yong asked, “Will you come back after your walk?”
Yin Hui shook her head, saying, “No, if I return too often, you’ll get tired of me. I should come back once a year to make you miss me.”
Yin Yong was both angry and worried. He was angry because his granddaughter was being ungrateful, and worried because he didn’t want her to think that he had a problem with her close relationship with Yin Lang.
“Alright, I was just teasing you,” Yin Hui said, hugging her grandfather. She added playfully, “Grandfather loves me the most, and I know that.”
Yin Yong sighed while patting her shoulder and said, “Don’t stay out for too long. If you’re not coming back home, make sure to return early.”
Yin Hui obediently nodded and climbed into the carriage, with Chang Feng riding alongside her. Chang Feng didn’t ask where she was going; he just kept silent. It was only when the carriage stopped in front of a store that he smiled. Yin Hui really liked to eat there.
At this time, there weren’t many pedestrians on the street, and some food stalls hadn’t even opened yet. Liao Qiuniang and her two female assistants were not busy at all. They were thrilled to see Yin Hui disembark from her carriage. Liao Qiuniang quickly wiped her hands on her apron and greeted her with a smile, “Lady, it’s so good to see you again! Would you like some buns?”
Fourteen-year-old Liao Qiuniang looked much healthier than before. The business had improved in their store, thanks to the Third Madam. With better income, they had been able to afford a better doctor for her mother, who had improved significantly. Her mother had even insisted on letting her maid go, saying she could help with the cooking.
Yin Hui smiled and said, “Please make ten buns. I’ll take them with me, but the street will be crowded. Would you take me to your courtyard to see how things are?”
Liao Qiuniang joyfully led her inside the store.
“How is your mother’s health?”
“Thanks to the Third Madam, our business is doing well, and I was able to get a better doctor for my mother. She’s much healthier now and even wants to help with the cooking.”
“How about your father?”
“My father went on a trip to the south with the Master once and earned a lot of money. Lately, he has been helping with the warehouse. But, oh, here’s my mother. This is the Third Madam!”
Yin Hui saw Liao Qiuniang’s mother, a fair and somewhat attractive woman. There was a lingering paleness on her face, suggesting that she still had underlying health issues.
Yin Hui took a walk around their residence. In the front, there was the store, and on both sides were neighbors’ houses. If anyone wanted to enter, they would have to climb over a wall at the back, but the Liao family kept a dog that would alert them. The dog was vigilant, barking softly but constantly, so it was an excellent guardian. Even if intruders tried to drug the dog, there were two female assistants who were proficient in martial arts.
Yin Hui had no concrete evidence about Liao Qiuniang’s death in her previous life, but based on her father’s attempt to assassinate Yin Wen, she was firmly convinced that Yin Wen had been responsible for Liao Qiuniang’s death. Back then, the place where the Liao family lived had been a run-down area, and Yin Wen could have easily subdued Liao Qiuniang while her father was away. Even if Liao Qiuniang’s bedridden mother heard or saw something, she would have been powerless to intervene.
However, this time, it would be different. The Liao family’s new residence was like a fortress, making it challenging for Yin Wen to carry out his plans.
Before leaving, Yin Hui instructed Liao Qiuniang’s two female assistants to accompany her wherever she went and not let her out of their sight.
