Chapter 2757: The True Culprit

Chapter 2757: Chapter 2757: The True Culprit

Richard Lee moved with incredible speed and ruthless efficiency because he loved his late son dearly as well and wanted justice just as badly.

As the investigation unfolded over the next forty-eight hours, the truth finally unravelled. It turned out that someone within their social circle had been secretly, deeply jealous of Catherine Lee’s high-society happiness all along. That twisted person was her supposedly close friend, Marlissa Lopez.

After going through a bitter, highly publicised divorce from her husband, Marlissa Lopez had become increasingly envious of Catherine Lee’s pristine life. Her own husband had cheated on her repeatedly, ultimately resulting in the public collapse of her marriage. Not only that, but she had also suffered from severe medical complications that left her entirely unable to have children of her own.

Seeing Catherine Lee constantly bragging about her newborn son, showing off her luxury lifestyle, and flaunting her seemingly perfect family on social media made Marlissa Lopez grow more jealous and resentful by the day.

Eventually, Marlissa Lopez noticed the subtle domestic tension at the estate, specifically that Catherine Lee seemed to irrationally dislike and resent Angelica Lee. Recognising a vulnerability, she decided to maliciously take advantage of that fractured relationship and use Angelica Lee as the perfect scapegoat to completely destroy Catherine Lee’s happiness from the inside out.

In a tragic way, her plan had been particularly successful at first. When Derek Lee died and Catherine Lee completely lost her mind to grief, she immediately blamed Angelica Lee without even trying to investigate the objective truth first, effectively destroying her bond with her daughter.

However, Marlissa Lopez had made one fatal error. She seemed completely oblivious to the terrifying power, influence, and extensive intelligence connections of the Lee Family. After only a short, intensive period of digital forensics and interrogation, the Lee Family’s security team quickly discovered the identity of the true culprit behind the poisoning.

The Lee Family’s operational efficiency was legendary for a reason. In less than twenty-four hours, Richard Lee’s intelligence operatives had gathered a mountain of undeniable forensic evidence.

Albert Lee sat in his usual leather armchair, his posture stiff and his expression unreadable and cold. Richard Lee stood rigid beside him, holding a thick folder of translated documents and field reports in his steady hand.

Meanwhile, Catherine Lee sat curled up on the opposite sofa. Her eyes were heavily swollen and bloodshot from hours of continuous crying, her mind still trapped in a chaotic fog of grief after losing her beloved son. Not to mention, even though every member of the family had repeatedly urged her to get some rest, she found herself completely unable to close her eyes or find a single moment of sleep.

As for the fourteen-year-old Angelica Lee, she stood entirely detached beside the large study window. She was calm. Too calm, actually. It was as if the brutal death of her younger brother and the wild, public accusation from her own mother had not caused even the slightest ripple of emotion on the surface of her composure.

However, no one in the mansion knew that the previous night, after she had safely locked herself inside her bedroom, she had cried in absolute silence. She had cried bitterly because her own mother had looked at her with hatred and called her a murderer. She had cried because her innocent little brother was dead.

Even though it outwardly seemed to the world that she was not close to her little brother, the truth was she had grown deeply fond of him. She often snuck down the grand hallway to visit his nursery late at night when the rest of the house was asleep. At first, she simply liked to stand by the bed and watch her little brother sleep in peace. However, during one of those midnight visits, the little boy had suddenly woken up.

Angelica had been startled for the first time in her life, fearing her mother’s wrath, but after the same routine happened multiple times, she became comfortable in his presence. She would gently play with her little brother in the dim light. That hidden bond was the real reason Derek Lee had become so exceptionally fond of his older sister, instinctively recognising her face.

Richard Lee took a deep, stabilising breath before officially announcing the grim findings of his investigation.

“We have successfully apprehended the true culprit.” Richard Lee stated, his voice echoing in the quiet room.

That single statement made Catherine Lee violently raise her head.

“Who is it?” Catherine Lee asked anxiously, her voice desperate for an enemy to blame.

“It is Marlissa Lopez. I believe you know her quite well.” Richard Lee said, his eyes locking onto his wife with a look of profound disappointment.

Catherine Lee froze instantly, her breathing hitching. She could not process what her husband had just said. That… that was her absolute best friend in high society.

“What?” Catherine managed to utter that single, breathless word of denial.

Richard Lee stepped forward and placed several surveillance photographs and bank documents directly on the coffee table for Catherine to see.

“These are the crystal-clear security photos from the restaurant yesterday afternoon. Marlissa met secretly with one of our estate’s primary kitchen workers. She paid him a massive amount of cash on the spot. Even though she was wearing a wide-brimmed hat and large sunglasses to conceal her identity, it was not enough to cover up her distinct silhouette. And not to mention, she was incredibly stupid enough to use her personal credit card to pay for her lunch bill at that very same restaurant.” Richard Lee snorted in pure disgust.

Richard then handed a separate background dossier to the patriarch, Albert Lee.
