Chapter 1952: Conjora’s Presentation
Chapter 1952: Conjora’s Presentation
The final presentation before Conjora ended shortly after, and as the representatives on stage gathered their documents and returned to their seats, President Morstell stood and adjusted the front of her formal coat before looking toward Ning.
"It’s time."
She stood up and looked up toward the second floor where their people were sitting and nodded once to let Sharon know that she should come down as well.
Ning rose beside her and lifted the secure cases without effort, while Sharon arrived from the side with the smaller equipment she needed for the demonstrations and followed them toward the podium as the hall gradually quieted.
The three of them stepped onto the stage together.
President Morstell moved to the center first, while Ning placed the cases beside Sharon and remained several steps behind them, his eyes moving across the gathered representatives as the enormous displays behind the podium changed to show Conjora’s flag.
Most of the hall had already become more attentive than it had been during the previous presentations.
Rumors about Conjora’s recent technological developments had spread far enough that several governments clearly expected something unusual, although very few people outside the country knew exactly what President Morstell intended to reveal.
She waited until the room settled.
"Conjora has spent the past several months developing technologies that we believe will change how awakened abilities are controlled, studied, and used throughout the world, and today we intend to reveal several of those developments publicly for the first time."
A few whispers immediately began around the lower level.
President Morstell gestured toward Sharon.
"This is Doctor Sharon Shoults, one of the principal researchers responsible for adapting and producing the technology we will be demonstrating today, while the man standing beside her is Blackfang, whom many of you already know as the first individual in recorded history to receive a Rank 9 assessment."
Ning gave the audience a small nod.
That received more attention than Sharon’s introduction.
The president continued without allowing the reaction to interrupt her. She spoke briefly of how important it was for each country to advance together, so she was willing to work together with everyone.
Their first demonstration involved the spray-based suppressor.
Sharon removed a sealed container from one of the cases and placed it on the prepared table, while the large displays behind her showed diagrams explaining how the substance interacted with awakened abilities once applied to a target.
Ning saw just how much the sprays had been optimized since the last time he had seen them during some demonstration.
President Morstell explained that the effect was temporary and could be adjusted depending on concentration, dosage, and the strength of the awakened individual, but unlike the permanent suppression methods most governments feared, this version was designed specifically for arrests, medical emergencies, and situations where a person had lost control of their power.
The hall immediately became louder.
Several officials leaned toward their aides, asking if the translations they were getting were at all correct. The massive suppressors that were limited to big commercial buildings were now becoming readily available for anyone and everyone.
Others began writing notes immediately to pass back home.
Ning saw representatives from multiple nations staring at the container with enough interest that he could already imagine the trade negotiations beginning before the presentation was even over.
President Morstell moved on to the mobile suppression device.
This drew an even stronger reaction.
The large suppression systems already used by governments required significant infrastructure and fixed installations, making them nearly useless outside prisons, research facilities, and specially prepared locations, but Sharon’s portable version could be transported by a small team and activated wherever it was needed.
The president explained its limitations carefully, especially its reduced range and shorter operating time compared to permanent installations, but the important part was obvious.
A suppression field could now be brought to the problem instead of forcing the problem to be brought to the field.
That alone changed countless situations involving awakened criminals.
The questions began before President Morstell had even finished speaking.
Minister Selene had to remind everyone that formal questions would be taken afterward.
People were still reeling from the new development, but the president didn’t give them pause. She had a limited amount of time on the podium, so she continued.
Sharon opened another case, inside of which rested several narrow vials filled with pale liquid.
The hall became quiet again, curiosity building up.
President Morstell waited for the attention to settle before speaking.
"Our next development is not designed to suppress awakened abilities, but to temporarily increase their effectiveness."
That created a different sort of reaction.
Ning saw several military officials sit straighter.
"This serum temporarily enhances an awakened individual’s existing power, allowing that ability to function beyond its ordinary limits for a short period of time, although the degree of improvement differs depending on the person, the ability, and the individual’s natural compatibility with the serum."
The murmurs became much louder.
Suppression technology was useful to governments and law enforcement, but a serum capable of increasing the strength of awakened individuals immediately affected heroes, soldiers, security forces, and anyone else whose value depended directly on their power.
Sharon began explaining the testing process.
Ning stopped listening.
His attention had moved elsewhere.
Leamor sat among the Faedrian delegation, watching the stage with the same interest as almost everyone else.
Captain Maelis stood closer to the Veronoth representatives, positioned behind Princess Elowen as she had been throughout the summit.
Ning looked from one to the other.
Then he stepped forward.
President Morstell noticed immediately, frowning slightly, though she didn’t let it be seen.
The president turned slightly toward him.
"What are you doing?" she barely whispered.
Ning ignored the question and smiled toward the crowd.
"I’m sure everyone wants some demonstration," Ning said. "We should show them some."
The president frowned.
Ning ignored her and looked through the crowd, as though searching for someone random to pick. Not everyone was willing.
"Sir Leamor Vanar, would you mind joining us on the stage?"
