Chapter 1963: Learning Control
Chapter 1963: Learning Control
Jun’Tal stared at Ning with a confused look.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you are capable of releasing all the energy that is inside of water," Ning said. "To give you an example, you see that bottle of water?"
Jun’Tal looked toward the bottle of water on the table. "Yes. What about it?"
"If you were to convert that much water into energy, you could obliterate this island off the face of the planet," Ning said. "You could explode all of the world’s explosives all at once, and they would struggle to come close to what you can do with the water in your body."
Jun’Tal stared with an expression that was stuck between pure fear and disbelief. On one hand, he had no reason to trust Ning. But on the other hand, he didn’t see why Ning would lie at all.
"Is that... true?" he asked.
"Yes," Ning answered.
Jun’Tal looked around uncomfortably. "Can... Can I get rid of it?"
Ning raised an eyebrow.
"You want to get rid of your power?"
"Yes," the young man said. "If it is as bad as you say it is, then I need to get rid of it right away."
Ning stared at the young man for a long time before shaking his head. "No, it’s not possible."
Jun’Tal’s shoulders dropped.
Ning thought for a bit. "Suppression may be possible, but—"
"Then suppress it," the young man said immediately. "How do I do that?"
The answer came so quickly that Ning stopped.
Jun’Tal looked completely serious.
"If this thing can hurt people, then I don’t want it. Just suppress it and let me go home."
Ning understood the reaction better than Jun’Tal probably expected, but unfortunately, the solution was nowhere near that simple.
"As I was saying, suppression may be possible, but it won’t work for you. At least, not entirely."
The young man’s face fell. "Why?"
"Your ability is too strong. A normal suppression field might weaken it, but keeping something like yours completely suppressed would require industrial-grade equipment operating around you constantly, and even then we could never be sure."
Jun’Tal looked down at the tablet in his hands.
"What am I supposed to do then?"
"For now, learn control. While you do that, I’ll see whether there is another way to help you."
The boy remained silent.
Ning gave him the time he needed to process it all.
Eventually, Jun’Tal returned to the table and finished eating, although most of the enthusiasm hunger had given him was gone now. Once he had eaten enough, he reached for the bottle but stopped and pulled his hands back.
He was worried he might accidentally do something with it. Ning had to tell him that he was only able to convert water inside of his own body before the young man had the nerve to drink it.
Once he was done, Ning left him alone for some time.
The young man took the opportunity to look around the island, realizing that he had really come to the middle of nowhere.
"Where are we exactly?" he asked Ning.
"An unnamed island very much in the south," Ning explained. "It’s so far away from civilization that I can tell you that no human has touched this land ever since they came to exist."
"Oh," the young man said, quite surprised.
Ning looked at him for a while. "You seem energetic enough. Come on, let’s not waste any more time then. It’s time I start training you."
The island was large enough that it took an ordinary person some time to cross, but Ning had chosen a section of the coastline where the trees thinned out before giving way to a broad stretch of pale sand. Beyond it, the ocean extended toward the horizon, while cold wind pushed small waves against the shore.
Jun’Tal stopped several meters from the water, standing on wet sand. He looked around for a moment before looking back at Ning.
"What do I do?"
"Use your power," Ning said.
The boy looked at him.
"And do what with it?"
"Anything. Just try to feel it and convert the smallest amount of liquid you possibly can. As small as you can, okay?"
Jun’Tal looked toward the ocean.
"Didn’t you say my power was bad? This sounds... dangerous."
"It might be," Ning said. "That is why we’re here."
That did not comfort Jun’Tal at all. He looked toward Ning once and then faced the ocean. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing, so he lifted his hands forward, imagining himself converting the sweat on his palm into energy.
Before he could be ready for it, his powers activated. Instantly, the air in front of his palm changed.
Ning sensed the energy before the boy did, though that did not mean much because of how fast it all was.
A tiny point of white light appeared before Jun’Tal’s palms, and then the air around it ionized.
The explosion came immediately.
A violent flash erupted in front of Jun’Tal, blasting sand outward in every direction while a sharp crack echoed across the coastline. The pressure wave struck the nearby trees hard enough to rip leaves from their branches, while the ground directly in front of the boy collapsed into a crater several meters across.
Jun’Tal was thrown backward.
Ning appeared behind him and caught him before his body could slam into the trunk of a coconut tree.
The boy’s eyes were wide.
"What... what was that?" he asked in pure panic.
Ning looked back at the crater the kid had formed with a strange expression on his face. "That... is your power. That is what happens when you activate your power."
"But I barely did anything!"
"I know," Ning said. "And even that was enough to do this. You will need to learn to control your powers a lot more than you think you have to."
Jun’Tal looked toward the crater, his heart palpitating with fear and panic. He truly had imagined using his powers as weakly as he could.
And that had caused this.
He could now fully see how much of a threat he really was to the rest of the world.
