Chapter 1972: Forms of Energy
Chapter 1972: Forms of Energy
Emma did not begin teaching Jun’Tal immediately.
Before she decided how to approach his training, she wanted to see exactly what his ability looked like when he used it deliberately.
She stood a short distance away from him near the edge of the training area, then held out one hand and nodded toward him. "Show me what you can do first. I want to see how your power behaves when you’re actually trying to control it."
Jun’Tal looked around for something harmless before picking up a dry leaf from the ground and placing it carefully on his palm. He focused for a moment, released the smallest amount of energy he could manage, and the air above his hand began to distort before the leaf darkened around the edges and finally caught fire.
Emma watched the entire process without saying anything, paying attention to the heat, the movement in the surrounding air, and the way Jun’Tal seemed to produce the effect.
Once the leaf had mostly burned away, Jun’Tal turned toward her.
"That’s what I can do," he said.
Emma shrugged slightly. "That’s great, but I was asking you to do it to me," she said, nodding toward her outstretched hand.
"Do the same thing to me."
Jun’Tal immediately looked up at her with a worried expression. "You want me to use it directly on your hand? That’s going to hurt."
Emma only smirked and kept her palm extended. "I’ll be fine. Just use the same amount you used on the leaf, and don’t suddenly increase it because you’re nervous."
Jun’Tal hesitated and glanced toward Ning, hoping he might say something, but Ning merely watched from nearby without interfering.
"Are you sure you won’t get hurt?" he asked.
"Just do it already," Emma said.
Since neither of them seemed concerned, Jun’Tal eventually took a slow breath, raised his hand near Emma’s palm, and activated his ability.
A small wave of energy formed between them, heating the air enough for a faint shimmer to appear around Emma’s skin. Jun’Tal stopped almost immediately, worried that he might have already gone too far, but Emma remained completely unharmed.
She looked down at her hand for a moment before nodding.
"Yes, you really are creating pure energy. That makes this much easier than I thought it might be."
Jun’Tal frowned at the statement. "Why does that make it easier? I don’t really understand what pure energy is supposed to mean."
Emma lowered her hand and looked toward him. "Has my father not told you that you create pure energy yet?"
"He did, but I don’t know what that means," Jun’Tal said.
"Hmm, then I suppose you don’t understand what pure energy is. How do I explain this?" She tilted her head slightly, lost in thought.
After a while, she spoke again. "Pure energy is the original form of all energy. You go to school, right? You know about energy?" she asked.
"I don’t really focus a lot in my classes," Jun’Tal said with a goofy smile. "But I do remember something about it changing shapes."
"Yes, it transforms from one type to another, and it is never destroyed. At its core, it’s the same energy, but when you use it, it appears in different forms."
"Like water?" Jun’Tal asked.
"Not really, but if that helps you understand the context better, then go ahead and think of it like that," Emma said. "Now, the important thing to understand is that pure energy on its own cannot exist. To exist, it must take another form immediately."
Jun’Tal looked down at his palm with a confused look. "Am I not creating pure energy? I thought it doesn’t change at all."
"You are creating pure energy, but it is not staying as pure energy. The moment you produce it, that energy naturally changes into some form that can interact with the world around you."
Jun’Tal nodded slowly, thinking back to all the training he had done over the past several days. "So it becomes heat. That’s what I’ve been making this entire time."
Emma shook her head slightly. "Not quite. What you’re producing first is closer to kinetic energy, because the energy is making particles move and vibrate, and that movement is what produces the heat you notice."
Jun’Tal looked confused again.
Emma continued before he could ask another question. "The heat is just one result of what the energy is doing, and light can appear as well when you release enough of it. You have been making a lot of light along with the heat. It’s just not in the spectrum you can see, which is why you haven’t realized it yet."
Jun’Tal could hardly understand anything that he was being told. He had been lost since five sentences ago at this point.
Emma looked at him and sighed. "What matters for you is that your energy is already changing into something the moment it leaves your body. However, that is not something of your doing. Through this training, we want you to be able to choose the type of energy it turns into."
Jun’Tal slowly nodded, although he was still clearly trying to fit the explanation together.
"If you can act on that energy before it settles into its usual form, then you should be able to decide what it becomes instead of letting it default into kinetic energy every single time," Emma said. "That means your power has far more possibilities than simply creating heat or explosions."
Jun’Tal looked up with growing curiosity. "What exactly can I do by doing that? What other types of energy are there besides heat and light, and what did you call it? Kinetic?"
"Technically, there are more variations than you could realistically count, but I’m not going to bog you down with useless information. There are nine that are generally treated as the regular forms, and those are all you will be learning about," Emma explained.
Jun’Tal raised his eyebrows. "Nine?"
"Heat, Sound, Kinetic, Electrical, Gravitational, Magnetic, Chemical, Radiant, and Nuclear. Those are the nine forms I’ll hopefully teach you about, although I do hope to give some lessons on more. Depending on the place you are, there is so much more than can be done through pure energy."
