Chapter 1986: A Second Set of Eyes

Ning went to meet Keira early the next morning. He arrived near the small place where the oracle usually stayed and found her already waiting outside, seated beneath a covered porch with a cup in one hand and several birds gathered along the railing nearby.

Keira looked toward him before he had even stepped fully into view, then gave him a knowing smile. "You’re earlier than I expected, but not early enough to surprise me. The birds told me you would be coming this morning."

Ning glanced toward the birds surrounding her, several of which stared back at him with far more interest than ordinary animals usually showed. "Did they happen to tell you anything else while they were at it?"

Keira took a slow drink before looking toward one of the birds perched closest to her. "Only that I’m going to come into quite a bit of fortune soon, and apparently a great deal of work along with it. I was hoping the first part would arrive without the second, but I suppose that was too optimistic."

Ning smiled as he walked closer. "Your birds don’t shy away from giving you good news along with the bad, then."

Keira set the cup aside and gave him a more interested look. "You’re offering me work?"

"I’m hiring you for an academy."

That answer caught her off guard enough that she paused for a moment. "An academy? Am I to be a teacher?"

Ning shook his head. "Just staff."

"Hmm... what academy?"

"It’s still being established, but the purpose is simple. It’s meant to be a place where children who awaken dangerous powers go to learn how to handle them."

Keira listened carefully, her expression slowly becoming more serious. "That sounds useful, but why do you need me?"

"I need you to find these children before they awaken," Ning explained. "There’s another clairvoyant involved, and I want you to do the same. I imagine having two of you will be better than just one."

Keira looked toward the birds again, clearly thinking about how her own ability could fit into that role. "It doesn’t sound bad. Though, it sounds like a lot more responsibility than telling a few people how their year is going to be or if their husband is cheating on them."

Ning nodded. "It is going to be a tough job."

"Hmm, I guess there is only one question I must ask, then," Keira said. "How’s the pay?"

Ning smiled.

"Incredibly high."

Keira smiled as well. "Consider me interested, then." She picked up her cup again and finished what remained inside before standing. "There’s no academy, though. When do you want me to start?"

"You can meet up with the other clairvoyant and decide what you want to do," Ning explained. "You two can talk things out and set up a system for now."

"When?" she asked.

"Any time."

"Right now too?" she asked.

Ning shrugged. "That’s perfectly fine."

She smiled. "The faster I get paid, the better. Tell me where I have to go."

"I’ll take you," Ning told her.

"Ooh, let me prepare my documents, then. Give me 10 minutes."

She rushed into the room and came out with a small suitcase a while later.

She expected a plane ride, but Ning was going to be faster. He teleported directly into the hallway of Number 1’s house.

The Angel walked out of his room and sighed when he saw Ning. "Come."

The two walked in. Keira looked around the place, fascinated.

"You two are going to be friends from now on," Ning told the man.

Keira turned toward the Angel. "Hello, I’m Keira. Keira Strait."

"Glade Wells," the Angel said. His attention remained on her for another second before shifting back toward Ning. "Who is this?"

"Another clairvoyant," Ning answered.

"Another? Aren’t I enough?" he asked.

Ning shook his head. "That would be inefficient. Your ability is useful, but you don’t see everything, and neither does she. The academy will be dealing with children whose powers could become dangerous very quickly, so having two people looking ahead gives us a better chance of finding problems before they happen."

Glade folded his arms. "And what exactly is her position supposed to be?"

"She’ll work under you," Ning said. "You’re still the headmaster, and you’ll be responsible for the academy as a whole. Keira is here to support the clairvoyance side of things and help identify children who might need intervention."

Keira glanced toward Glade. "So you’re my boss."

Glade gave her a mildly displeased look. "Apparently."

Ning stepped closer to both of them and made his expectations clear. "The purpose is simple. You two work together and find troubled children before they become trouble. I will find more people who will deal with the actual grunt work of going to get these kids. I have two people in mind already. More should help."

Glade listened without interrupting, while Keira nodded slowly.

"You’re both clairvoyants, but I don’t want either of you treating this like a competition," Ning continued. "If one of you sees something, you share it. If your visions disagree, you investigate instead of assuming the other person is wrong. The children are the reason this exists, so everything else comes after that."

Keira looked toward Glade. "I can work with that."

Glade remained silent for a moment before finally sighing. "I suppose having someone else around will make the work easier, even if I originally expected to handle it alone."

"She’ll be under your authority," Ning reminded him. "Nothing more than that changes."

Glade nodded reluctantly. "Fine. I accept."

Keira smiled. "Good. Then I suppose I should learn what kind of mess I just agreed to join."

Ning looked between the two of them and felt satisfied that the arrangement would work well enough for now. With Keira joining Glade, the academy had two people capable of noticing dangerous awakenings before they became disasters, which was already more than most countries had ever bothered to prepare for.

His part in that conversation was finished.

Ning left the two clairvoyants behind to begin figuring out how they would work together.
