Chapter 229: Pillar of Blood
Chapter 229: Pillar of Blood
The Marquis’s shout was cut off, and the faint sound of shattering glass filled my ears.
It was as if the room itself was breaking apart around me, reshaping the scenery into something new, while I could still feel the heavy hand resting on my shoulder.
That was when I realized what was happening... I was being transported.
Yeah, it seemed this Envoy had done as he pleased and taken me with him... maybe I should start crying.
Damn it, wasn’t someone supposed to come to the auction like the Marquis said, then invite me or recruit me, whatever, so I could learn what I could from them before blowing everything over their heads and turning it all into ashes scattered by the wind... that would’ve been nice.
But here I was, being taken somewhere by a man who called himself the Envoy, someone ridiculously strong compared to me.
I gritted my teeth as a new scene began to form before my eyes.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared right now... no, I was genuinely scared this time.
I’d rather be thrown into a Red Zone again than enter one of these bastards’ hideouts... just thinking about it brought back nauseating memories.
I took a breath, calming myself and pushing the unnecessary thoughts to the back of my mind.
"Don’t be afraid. Like I said before, I’ll return you before the auction ends." The man seemed to notice my tension, his cold voice echoing beside my ear in this fractured space around us.
Yeah, it’s fine. They don’t know I’m 01. I’m just Caius Astroweild, a talented student from the Axis they want to recruit and make one of them.
And since they’ve already set their eyes on me, they would’ve come to me sooner or later... even if it wasn’t today or this way, so let’s see what I can gain from this...
The next moment, the scenery fully formed before my eyes as cold wind blew against my face.
Under the dim moonlight stretched endless white snow, while fierce winds roared as they swept through massive rocks. Far in the distance, I could see sharp barren peaks stretching as far as the eye could see.
We were at the summit of a mountain range... and I might know which one.
I slipped the hand wearing my storage ring into my pocket as I asked the man, who still had his hands on my shoulders,
"Where are we? And where are you taking me?" I let a hint of tension seep into my voice.
As much as I wanted to curse him, I had to be smart in situations like this.
But instead of receiving an answer, the view of the mountains before me distorted once again and changed... at the same time, I activated my ability and sent some Essence into the ring in my pocket.
Moments later, we appeared somewhere new, and the freezing cold of the mountains was replaced by the familiar warmth of an enclosed room.
I looked around at what appeared to be a luxurious waiting room. Furnishings and furniture were arranged throughout the place, giving this enclosed room a bit of the life it otherwise lacked.
But the moment the Envoy removed his hand from my shoulder, my senses swept across the area around me, covering everything beyond these white walls.
What I sensed next made me swallow unconsciously as I reflected on the decisions I’d made in my short life.
I looked around the room before my eyes stopped on the Envoy. "Will you tell me where we are now?"
I didn’t need the answer because I already knew... but I didn’t want to look like I knew.
Pain flooded my head as the mysterious man’s courteous words echoed, contradicting his cold, emotionless tone. "Please, have a seat. You’ll get your answers shortly."
I looked at his hand gesturing toward the sofa as the pain in my head intensified. I could barely make sense of where this place was... and what lay beyond these thick walls.
I kept my expression somewhere between nervousness and fear... though I really was afraid.
I had no choice but to do as he said. I walked to the sofa and sat down without feeling any real comfort. "You said you wanted to take me to the Lady. Who is she?"
With his hands still in his pockets, he replied indifferently, "You’ll meet her soon."
For some reason, I almost smiled sarcastically when he said that, but I barely kept my expression in check as I tried to get even the slightest bit of information out of him. "I heard a little from the Marquis, but there are still many things I don’t understand... I doubt you’ll answer them anyway, so tell me just one thing..."
"Do you always kidnap people like this, or am I getting special treatment?"
The Envoy stared at me for a few moments, his gray eyes piercing through the shadows cast by the brim of his hat.
"You’re not being kidnapped... and yes, this is special treatment."
Special treatment, huh... actually, I knew where that special treatment was coming from...
It came from that overwhelming presence distorting my senses, several walls away from this room.
A soul that overwhelmed my mind and turned every other soul into nothing more than dim lights... something that made me hear the heavy beating of my own heart.
And worse than that, it was getting closer with every passing moment.
Then a soft sound echoed as the automatic door opened at the same time. The Envoy gave a deep bow toward the doorway, and for the first time, a trace of emotion mixed into his cold voice.
"I’ve brought him as you requested, my Lady."
As for me, all I could see was the blinding radiance of her soul burning into my mind, until I canceled my ability and heard the sound of heels striking the floor as an extraordinarily beautiful woman walked into the room.
With long black hair flowing down like strands of silk, a pair of bright red eyes stared into my face, making the blood in my veins tremble.
A smile formed on her lips as she stepped into the room wearing a long black dress. She opened her mouth, and her voice echoed like a beautiful melody as she praised the Envoy.
"You’ve done well."
The next moment, before I could even realize it, I felt a pair of soft hands gently holding my face and lifting it slightly, forcing me to meet the eyes of the woman now standing before me as her words echoed in my ears.
"So you’re Caius Astroweild..." Her tone was calm and curious.
With both hands on my cheeks, she held my face gently, while I felt my heart beating harder than ever before.
Blood surged violently through my body as if I were losing control of myself.
My breathing grew heavy as I asked the most important question right now.
"Who are you?"
The woman standing before me smiled, tilting her head as strands of her hair swayed over her shoulder.
"Are you curious?"
I nodded before I even realized it, and her smile deepened as she answered.
"They call me... the Pillar of Blood."
"Medirin."
