Chapter 274: Wrong feeling
Chapter 274: Wrong feeling
Wrong, this feels wrong.
I clenched my teeth together in anger, biting my tongue every now and then, making some pain and a faint metallic taste settling in my mouth.
I lay in my bed inside the tent, staring at the dark cloth ceiling with resentful eyes, my hand was on my chest, the fabric of my shirt creasing under my grip, if I hadn’t been controlling myself it would’ve been torn already.
I closed my eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath before I let it out in a long exhale... I repeated this process for the next few minutes until my nerves went back to healthy levels.
And now, why am I like this?... well, three days had passed since the attack, and honestly, they passed peacefully, we had nothing to do.
So am I angry because of the extra free time... of course not.
It’s the feeling in my chest, if someone told me right now that I was drugged while I was asleep and they opened my chest and poured some liquid nitrogen inside it, which for some reason never runs out... I swear I’d believe him.
At first, it was bearable, I could sleep and ignore it... but with every day, with every hour, it got worse.
And now here I am in bed suffering from a fit of anger... not because it’s unbearably painful, I’m not proud of this, but I have an amazing resistance to pain... if I want, I won’t show any reaction, even if my limbs burned in fire... as long as I don’t lose them.
Yeah, this is different from burning or wounds, I’ve never experienced it before... and I don’t want to experience it anymore... and even though it’s not painful enough to drive me insane, three straight days of torment is what made me lose my nerve.
"I swear I’m going to kill him... I’ll throw him from the sky, no, I’ll pull his eye out of its socket before the belt moves him." I gritted my teeth as I muttered like a madman.
Even though Theo said I’d heal with just rest, here I am, even moving my essence wasn’t like usual, slower and heavier and needing more focus... and it’s obvious I don’t have good focus these days.
Even my sense was hard to stretch out to its furthest limit, especially since those supervisors show up some distance away from us sometimes.
"Fuck, fuck it... everything..." The quiet cursing echoed inside the tent in a long line.
This stupid game, Theo, the Hanging Islands, Medirin, the Void System, that strange Prince... everything that contributed to complicating my complicated life, fuck you all.
I gritted my teeth in a new fit of anger, it was like your tooth hurting for days in a row until you lose your nerve... at least a tooth can be treated, and of course no matter how bad that pain was it wasn’t close to this.
Again, I started taking deep breaths to calm myself down, and yeah, I was as good at calming down as I was at getting angry, so after a few minutes I sighed with regret as I wondered how the next days would pass if things stayed like this.
Slowly I got up from the bed and left the tent, the morning sun hit my face, in a gesture that’s supposed to be refreshing for anyone.
With our number shrinking by half the place was quieter, and since this island only had three bridges, two connected to the neighboring islands, and only one leading to the fourth level, we didn’t need to spread out, just keeping someone near the purging marker in the middle of the forest... at least that saved him from the fight days ago, though I bet he’s shaking with fear at night.
These days, waking up and finding Ivan at the campfire making breakfast like we’re on a picnic, was a normal thing... I don’t even understand why he does that; nobody wants him to do that.
But I wasn’t in a good mood to care about this, how long has it been since I was in a good mood for more than three days?... if things keep going like this, I’ll start attending therapy sessions soon.
We’d moved our camp away from the place where the battle broke out earlier, so now I was walking on flat ground with the strange purple grass, while I listened to the distant rustling of the leaves of the dark forest.
When I came closer to the fire and the trunks lined up around it, Ivan who was flipping something in the pan turned his head toward me, the confusion clear on his features. "Oh, Caius... good morning, but why do you look like you haven’t slept in days?"
I rolled my eyes, I bet some dark circles had formed under them... I hadn’t seen myself in a mirror, so I didn’t know. "Maybe because I haven’t slept in days."
Ivan blinked as he forgot about the pancakes on the fire. "I see, you look angry these days, are you suffering from high cortisol... maybe I’ll make you some of that calming tea from these purple herbs, it worked on Valia so much that she stopped hitting me... she stopped moving for half a day actually."
I stared at him with dead eyes, I didn’t know whether to laugh at the poor girl or commit a murder right now... who the hell feeds someone strange plants he finds on the ground.
And now I was leaning toward the second option, so to keep myself from doing anything stupid, I walked over and sat on one of the trunks near the fire, across from Ivan... Ivan who’d just realized the pancake in the pan had burned so he hurried to flip it with a clumsy movement, which led to the pan tipping over and falling into the fire.
And trying to pull it out quickly before it got hot, his foot hit the bowl of batter resting on the ground which led to all of its contents spilling onto the grass. "Oh! my god... my great pancakes!" His voice rose in unjustified crying.
I sighed, and sighed, then got up, since there’s no fresh breakfast then why should I listen to his crying... my own crying is enough.
...
After Ivan destroyed breakfast, I left the campfire to a far corner away from the noise... specifically from a young Awakened crying over his pancakes.
Sitting at the edge of the island, staring at the sea of clouds below, I didn’t feel any comfort... nothing but the discomfort coming from my chest, I couldn’t even meditate through my sense like I do these days.
With a thought, the runes glimmered in the air, something I thought was a given months ago, but now maybe it held more meaning.

With that the runes ended... unfamiliar letters, but understandable, maybe it wasn’t the right time for this but I’m trying to push this pain out of my head.
In those ruins on Ancient Earth, it was written that the remains of its legacy would guide us to the path we’d forgotten... the paths of ascension and advancing through the ranks.
