Chapter 409: Numbering
Chapter 409: Numbering
Kneeling once to someone was already surprising enough, but to kneel twice in hopes of becoming a student or disciple, Xu Feng found it baffling.
This was especially true when Feras and the rest were rather skillful, given their swift protection of him and subsequent apprehension of Chris. Continue reading at empire
"Speak, why do you want to be taken under wing?" Xu Feng crossed his arms and asked coolly. "My time is precious so if you beat around the bush, then just forget about it and scram for me."
Originally, he could still be rather relaxed, but thanks to the clown Chris— or now deceased Chris, his time got delayed.
He truly didn't have the time and energy to mess around at this moment.
Not only was the raiding plan of his personal 10 slots about to fall apart, but the others who won the bid were slowly logging in from the large queue number and teleporting to Star Falls City.
Having sensed the annoyance from Xu Feng, Feras dared not beat around the bush and began to answer honestly.
"It's like this, Sir." Feras stood up and began to recount their experience at the Arena. They were extremely skilled fighters, but recently, they had repeatedly been defeated by people inferior to them.
At first, they didn't think much of it and continued to bet and fight in the Arena, only to end up on a massive losing streak.
From then on, doubts started appearing in their mind, wondering if they were really skilled or just a bunch of useless fighters who had too big of an ego.
And that lasted until they stumbled across Lunar Wraith's first battle.
"The confidence that Lady Lunar Wraith exuded was unmatched and we even made a bet that she would have lost to Death Bringer miserably." Feras scratched his head embarrassingly.
Nevertheless, he quickly snapped out of it and his eyes sparkled with admiration when he described how Lunar Wraith shattered all forms of expectation and overturned the grim situation so beautifully.
The fight itself had reignited the flames that had once been quenched, and soon, Feras started winning his fight with ease.
"Every time I recalled how Lady Lunar Wraith caught Death Bringer's stealth and easily nuked him, my motivation and fighting spirit just soared." Feras clenched his fist tightly and exclaimed.
His other companions also nodded in agreement, their eyes glimmered with hope.
Meanwhile, Xu Feng yawned and casually said, "So you all lacked confidence and began to self-doubt yourself because of repeated failures. You wanted to be taken under our wing not because of our strength, but rather because of our demeanor and immense confidence."
"Yeah…" Feras tried to use the hype of Lunar Wraith to cover their self-doubt, but it was obvious that Xu Feng wouldn't be deceived by it.
To simplify, these people want to learn how and why Xu Feng was so confident despite their insignificant skills.
"Hmm, I can understand your circumstances, but I don't lack a swordsman currently. I also don't have much to offer for your services." Xu Feng furrowed his brows and explained.
If it was before he had obtained Flint, then he wouldn't mind taking in a personal guard such as Feras.
However, now that he got Flint, the amount of resources needed to nurture him would be exponential. He couldn't afford to split his resources any further when he needed to prioritize his own character growth as well.
"I don't need any resources from you, Sir. Don't misunderstand." Feras quickly clarified himself and continued, "We just wish to tag along with you for a while and experience your conduct. Of course, I won't ask for it for free and will do some mercenary work for you in return."
"Is that the same thought for your companion too?" Xu Feng raised the question, his gaze staring at the four people behind Feras. The numbers were far lower than the previous time, but such a number for the NPC seeking a player's help was surreal.
"Yes, they are—"
Before Feras could introduce them, Xu Feng raised his hand and shook his head. "Save it, I'm just going to call them by numbers from 1 to 4. I heard too many names lately and I'm not interested in learning more about who I might or might not interact with further."
Speechless, Feras' companions had their mouths agape.
"No need to frown. If you are intent on following me, then show me proper progress or achievement. By then, I'll learn your name." Xu Feng commented.
Shortly after, he assigned each of them a number respectively, sorting them by their class order as shown in the system prompt class selection.
Number 1 was a Berserker, number 2 was a Knight Lancer, number 3 was a Sorcerer, and number 4 was Arcane Mage.
Speaking of number 4, this person was rather strong with the barrier he had put up to defend Xu Feng.
Thus, Xu Feng patted on number 4's shoulder and asked, "What's your name?"
As if a god had bestowed honor and glory on him, number 4's eyes lit up as he quickly answered, "Sir, I'm Derick."
While Derick's expression was filled with bliss, the other numbers gazed at him enviously. Even if they tried to exclaim their names at this moment, Xu Feng would put on deaf ears, acting as if he didn't hear them at all.
After giving him another light pat, Xu Feng still found it a bit of a pity to not see an Assassin among them.
Right now, he was lacking an Assassin. To make things worse, he had received a message from Carmen that there was already a little bit over 30 percent of confirmed buyers arriving at Star Falls City.
'Forget it, I'll just hold an internal competition among the guild members we currently have. Hopefully, there will be some hidden gems among them.' Xu Feng made up his mind and decided.
"Eh, Sir, where are you going?" Feras was startled when he saw Xu Feng was about to walk away.
"For now, keep grinding and improving yourself in the Arena. If you need assistance, then go ask around for Crimson Heart and she will address you." Xu Feng explained without pausing his steps.
