Chapter 597: Melvin

After realizing she had been swindled by her good friend to take upon such a difficult task, Veronica felt the urge to strangle her.

"When did you become so cunning, Carmen?" Exasperated, Veronica puffed up her chest and asked.

"I didn't become cunning." Carmen felt wronged and sniffed her nose.

"I just wanted my friend to finally be able to showcase her specialty without being restricted. The Guild Leader already said you will handle everything and those who disobey you shall be disciplined. That includes me as well." She fidgeted her fingers around, throwing Xu Feng under the bus once again.

Carmen had no worries whatsoever about using Xu Feng's name repeatedly.

What could he do about it anyway once the rice was cooked? He could only eat them or be forced to waste the cooked rice. And knowing Xu Feng's personality, there was no way in hell he would waste his resources.

In other words, so long as Carmen accomplished this task and got Veronica to take the role. She could easily shift all the blame to Xu Feng and even Veronica's anger would be directed to him, and not her.

'Hehe, this is all because of the Guild Leader's bad influence.' Carmen felt proud to learn a bit of Xu Feng's shrewdness and use it against him.

"Achoo!" Xu Feng, who had been strolling the streets and asking the villagers for some information, suddenly sneezed loudly.

His action nearly startled some of the villager's children, prompting him to quickly apologize.

"S-Sorry, I've been exhausted lately and exposed to irregular weather." Xu Feng smiled apologetically, unaware of why he suddenly sneezed as he rubbed his nose.

"It's okay, young man. You're trying to do your best to resolve the village's problem." The kind NPC old lady smiled lightly and shook her head. "We've all heard from Thorin that you are helping the village to investigate the new outsiders who have been causing trouble for us. So we're all thankful for you."

Laughing awkwardly, Xu Feng thanked the old lady for the information before excusing himself.

Once he distanced himself and found a discreet place, Xu Feng cursed Thorin silently in his mind.

'That despicable whipped father. He actually set such a trap for me. No wonder the villagers had been cooperating nicely despite their expression.' He smiled bitterly, having realized his information gathering had been smooth sailing because everyone in the village knew about his duty.

Although it made things easier for him to investigate, it also made things difficult for him to track the insurgent's hideout.

After all, these insurgents could disguise themselves and pose as normal villagers. What's stopping them from learning who he was and what his objective was?

To summarize, Thorin had pushed him to the frontline and announced loudly to the enemies to be wary of him. However, Xu Feng was positive that aside from that, he also became the "smokescreen".

With the disguised insurgents paying close attention to his activities, there were bound to be some loopholes from them due to lack of manpower.

'Fine, since you never expect me to succeed then let me shock you to death, Thorin.' Xu Feng's eyes narrowed as he loved to take on challenges.

The more people underestimated him, the more willing he was to prove them wrong and rub it in their faces.

Shortly after, Xu Feng began parading around the streets, clamoring for villagers to come to him if they were to find anything suspicious or a clue that led to the outsiders.

Amidst Xu Feng's parading, a few villagers began exiting the village undetected by the guards.

As they soon found a discreet place, one of them began asking the leader of the group. "What do we do now, Melvin? That new person kept trying to target us."

"Stop panicking, Otis," Melvin warned sternly, ripping off the disguise that was pasted on his face. "That person wants to find us, but we'll let him know that we're not some easy targets."

While saying that, Melvin held a menacing look and licked his lips coldly, almost as if he could devour Xu Feng alive.

Otis shrunk his neck in fear, but deep in his eyes, there was admiration. Had it not been for Melvin's quick thinking, then they would have been eliminated along with the rest of the insurgents.

Although no one knew who leaked their hideout, it became obvious that not many of them survived to live for another day.

"The village can't be taken by force despite their tranquility, but we also cannot allow them to find the transit spot either." Melvin continued, emphasizing the need for secrecy.

Without the transit spot that allowed them to leave and come as they wished, they would have been found out by the guards and Immortals tasked by the Towns.

"We might have failed in the past, but so long as we are alive. We will make sure those towns pay the price for what they've done to us." Melvin clenched his fist and declared solemnly.

The others wanted to raise their hands and shout in agreement, only to be halted by Melvin.

"Shush, are you trying to let the others know we're here?" Melvin sighed at his group of comrades who weren't that bright in the head.

Nevertheless, they were still his comrades in battle who fought loyally and fiercely for him. Thus, he can't possibly ditch them all— unless there was no other option.

'If I can just change to another identity, then I'm definitely abandoning these dummies.' Melvin thought to himself. Ever since the insurgents failed, he knew their objective in trying to ruin the towns was done. All he wished now was his own survival and these comrades of his were his pawns.

"Otis, go back and give off fake information to that clamoring person. Lead him to a discreet place and we will finish him off. His equipment was pretty good so we can sell them later on for money." Melvin suggested, pushing Otis to take the risk to see just how capable this new person was.

Unaware of Melvin's malicious scheme, Otis nodded his head. "Leave it to me!"
