Chapter 124
Chapter 124 : Wholesale Clothing
Before leaving, she saw a small black dot in the direction of her home, which was getting smaller and smaller. She knew who that person was, but she would never look back. She didn’t want to live a hard life anymore.
Jiang Li had no idea what was happening in the Xu family. The decoration of the store was at a critical stage. She ran around day and night buying decoration materials and watching the workers set up the store. Finally, it was finished just in time for the start of school.
The shop she bought was a two-story house along the street. The first floor was used as a shop, and the second floor was for living.
There was a small courtyard behind the house, and at the end of the courtyard, two side-by-side bungalows were used as a warehouse by Jiang Li.
Opening a store certainly wasn’t just about selling hair bands. Jiang Li planned to go to Guangzhou to buy some fashionable clothes from the south.
Qi Shaoqiang had someone buy a train ticket for him, and this time he would go with Jiang Li.
The train station was still crowded, and this time she felt more uneasy than last because she was carrying cash for wholesale clothing.
Most of their family savings were spent on buying and renovating the shop. After deducting daily expenses, Jiang Li only had 800 yuan left to purchase goods. However, it was her first time making purchases, so she was just trying to figure things out.
After sitting on the train for two days and one night, her legs felt weak when they got off. But once they arrived in Guangzhou, Jiang Li felt refreshed. Her beloved hometown had, however, changed so much that it was unrecognizable, as if it had gone back 40 years in time.
Both of them were exhausted, so after getting off the bus, they went straight to the largest wholesale market in Yangcheng and stayed in a guesthouse nearby.
As soon as she entered the guesthouse, Jiang Li noticed a big cockroach, a local specialty of Guangzhou, lying on the leg of the table.
As a seasoned Guangzhou citizen before traveling through time, Jiang Li had killed countless cockroaches with her slippers. She skillfully took off her shoes and killed the cockroach on the spot.
Qi Shaoqiang, standing nearby, looked calm on the outside, but Jiang Li could still see the fear from his trembling lips.
“Can the cockroaches in Guangzhou fly?”
“You’ll get used to it,” Jiang Li replied, dropping her shoes and patting Qi Shaoqiang on the shoulder. “Go to bed early. Tomorrow, we’ll visit the market first, then have morning tea.”
Qi Shaoqiang stayed awake almost all night, while Jiang Li slept soundly and even snored a little.
The next day, Jiang Li entered the wholesale market with high spirits. It wasn’t even seven o’clock in the morning, but the market was already crowded with people.
After finding a clothing stall, Jiang Li didn’t rush to buy anything. Instead, she wandered around, watching the stall owner and the wholesaler argue with each other while silently noting the prices of different fabrics.
The clothes in the wholesale market were updated much faster. Winter clothes were sold in summer, and although Haicheng had just entered autumn, the autumn clothes in Guangzhou were already being cleared out.
After observing for a long time, Jiang Li finally chose a pair of jeans and a pair of slightly flared black pants.
She picked out three types of clothes. One was a loose, long gray suit jacket with a gold round buckle belt, suitable for colder weather. Another was a white polka-dot shirt, which could be worn immediately.
Since they were clearance goods, the stall owner happily gave Jiang Li all the remaining pieces. Excluding those with quality issues, Jiang Li wholesale-purchased 50 pieces of two types of jeans, 30 jackets, and 30 shirts.
The stall owner was a shrewd woman and complained, “Little girl, the clothes here are of very good quality. Normally, people buy hundreds of pieces at a time. Someone came to buy a hundred pieces a few days ago, but I refused to sell them.
I’ll make you my friend today, so come back to me next time you need more clothes.”
Jiang Li knew that if it weren’t for the stock running out, the owner probably wouldn’t have allowed such a small order.
“Sister Hong, you have good taste and are beautiful. This outfit looks especially good on you. I saw you at the entrance of the market, so I came to your stall to take a look. If the goods sell well, I will definitely come back next time.”
Though it was flattery, Li Lihong felt inexplicably happy hearing it from the young girl. “Look at what you’re saying. You young girls look good in anything. I’m old.”
“You want to take this to the train station, right? Do you want a tricycle? I know someone who does.”
“Come to me more often in the future. It doesn’t matter if you order a lot of clothes, you can send them over by train. If you have a fax machine, I can fax the clothing styles to you directly. You don’t even have to run around. Just make a phone call and I’ll ship the goods to you right away.”
The boss lady’s suggestion made Jiang Li’s eyes light up, and the big black mobile phone on her waist also made Jiang Li jealous.
It was time-consuming and laborious to come here, and it would be much more convenient if this method could be used. However, she had neither a phone nor a fax machine, so she could only transport the goods by hand.
They exchanged contact information. It wasn’t convenient for them to go for morning tea as they were carrying several large bags of clothes, but luckily, they had bought train tickets for the afternoon.
Jiang Li simply took the tricycle recommended by the proprietress and went directly to the train station with her belongings. The two of them had a quick meal at the station.
On the way back, Qi Shaoqiang didn’t dare to close his eyes, fearing his pockets would be cut and a few items stolen, or that someone would bump into Jiang Li.
After getting off the tricycle and reaching home with a heavy heart, Qi Shaoqiang quickly washed up, ate the hot meal prepared by Chen Xianyun, and then they fell asleep.
When she woke up, it was already bright. Jiang Li went straight to an overpass near the train station in Haicheng.
There were often people looking for odd jobs there. She had to attend school normally and could only go to the store in her spare time, so she needed to find another clerk to help her.
After walking around the overpass for a while, Jiang Li spotted a skinny girl. She was wearing a short-sleeved floral shirt and sky-blue cotton pants. Her clothes and shoes were patched up.
Almost all the people around her looking for work had been hired, but when she introduced herself, she was dismissed for being clumsy. Even after several employers passed by, she remained where she was.
Jiang Li deliberately walked towards her and dropped a floral handkerchief containing dozens of dollars.
Not long after, she was stopped by a woman speaking broken Mandarin, “You dropped your stuff!”
Jiang Li turned around and saw the girl panting, chasing after her, holding the handkerchief. Beads of sweat hung on her thin face. “Girl, this is yours.”
“Thank you,” Jiang Li said, collecting the items. “I see you are looking for a job?”
Wang Juan was stunned. “Yes, yes. I just didn’t find one. If I don’t find one today… I guess I’ll have to jump into the river.”
“I see you’re looking for a job. Tell me about your situation. If it’s suitable, maybe I can introduce you to one.”
Jiang Li pulled her under the shade of a tree and asked for more details.
For some reason, Wang Juan trusted this stranger she had only met once. She was so beautiful, and although young, she felt unexpectedly trustworthy.
“My hometown is in You County. My father wanted to sell me to a cripple as his wife, so I stole money from home and ran away.”
As Wang Juan spoke, her eyes reddened. Her tears weren’t for herself, but for her older sister.
