Qi Shaoqiang reacted instantly, “Pregnant?”
Jiang Li nodded, “More than a month.”
Before she could say anything else, Qi Shaoqiang hugged her tightly. She could feel her heart racing faster, and then the voices of the security guards cheering, “Lizi, thank you.”
In the afternoon, Qi Shaoqiang took leave and followed Jiang Li all the way home. No matter how much Jiang Li tried to push him away, she ended up giving in.
“What do you want to eat? I’ll make it for you.”
Jiang Li couldn’t eat any meat now, so Qi Shaoqiang specially bought a new pot to cook vegetarian dishes for her.

That day, Wang Juan greeted her and said she was going to the station to pick up her sister and asked for two hours off.
Jiang Li agreed immediately, “Have you found a house?”
“I’ve found one. It’s not far from the store. I rented a place in the school’s residential quarters.”
Wang Juan received a salary of two hundred and thirty yuan in her first month. As soon as she got it, she found a public telephone booth and called home.
The call was to the village party secretary’s house, not a public phone, so anyone who answered the phone had to pay.
Her mother cursed and shouted when she heard it was Wang Juan who had run away, “You dead girl, how dare you run away! Do you know your marriage is ruined because of you? Your brother has no money to marry now, and you’re a useless, heartless person, just like your sister, a piece of garbage!”
Wang Juan ignored her mother’s words. She’d heard worse since childhood.
In her heart, she no longer considered her mother as a mother, so she didn’t care at all, thinking of it as just a dog barking.
“I bought a ticket and sent it home. Ask my sister to come out and work.”
“You stupid girl, did you get rich out there? Or did you sell yourself? Send all the money you earn back home!”
“I’ve only been working for two days. Where would I get that kind of money? I’ve been eating at my boss’s house and still owe him money for meals! But the boss said he can pay 500 a month, and we’re still short of people. Ask my sister to come over, or the money will go to someone else.”
Upon hearing the amount, Wang Juan’s mother subconsciously lowered her voice and looked around cautiously.
How can she earn so much working outside? She thought this girl must not be doing a respectable job, she must be a prostitute.
This would be good, though, since it would bring in more dowry than marriage would at once.
Wang Juan’s mother agreed, “I’ll pack her things tomorrow. Remember to send money home when you get it. Your brother is still waiting to get married.”
“Remember to bring the household registration certificate. The boss asked for it.”
“Got it.”
After waiting anxiously for four or five days, Wang Juan finally received a call from her sister saying that she had arrived at the train station.
“Okay, go quickly, don’t keep your sister waiting.”
Hearing her boss urging her, Wang Juan quickly borrowed her boss’s bicycle and headed for the station.
Wang Fen, upon getting off the bus, was at a loss. She held a ragged bag in her hands, frightened by the busy traffic and the crowds of people.
“Baozi, do you want some hot buns?”
“Stay in a hotel? This is cheaper than a guesthouse…”
Wang Fen avoided the various businessmen trying to solicit customers and sat on the steps, dazed. When people’s gazes fell on her, she instinctively lowered her head.

Wang Juan saw her older sister sitting on the steps from a distance. She was still wearing the same tattered one-piece dress, and her exposed arms were covered with new and old scars. Her face was also bruised.
The cloth shoes on her feet were torn. Damn her parents, they didn’t even let her sister wear a pair of decent shoes when she went out.
Hearing Wang Juan’s voice, Wang Fen looked up, a hint of joy in her eyes, “Xiao Juan!”
Seeing that Wang Juan was not only well-dressed but had also gained weight, Wang Fen breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed like the girl was living a good life.
“Sister, did you bring your household registration certificate?”
Wang Fen nodded. She had attended school for a year. When the train ticket arrived, she had heard Wang Juan wanted her to transfer her household registration. She guessed her sister’s intention was to rescue her from the difficult situation at home.
She was torn. On one hand, she was thrilled and excited to escape, but on the other hand, she was scared of the unknown and worried she would burden her sister.
Wang Juan picked up her sister’s package and handed her the hot buns she had just bought. “Sister, you must be hungry. Eat something to fill your stomach. I’ll cook two delicious dishes for you later.”
Wang Fen felt a bit confused as she followed her sister to the bicycle. She limped slightly with each step, her right foot clearly injured.
“Sister, get in the car!”
“Xiaojuan, your bike?” Wang Fen asked, a little worried. Before she came, those people had kept saying Xiaojuan was selling things outside. She refused to believe it, but the sudden appearance of the bike made her heart sink.

Wang Juan cried as she rode the bike all the way to the university family quarters. Seeing the college students coming and going, Wang Fen lowered her head, feeling inferior.
“We’ve arrived!”
Considering her sister’s mobility issues, Wang Juan had rented a large single room on the first floor, which she had already cleaned in advance.
The sheets were clean, the curtains were pink, and a bunch of wildflowers sat in a tin can on the table, which she had picked on her way home.
“Sister, this will be our home from now on.”
Wang Juan looked at Wang Fen, and the two sisters gazed at each other, both bursting into tears. They hugged each other and cried bitterly until Wang Fen’s stomach growled.
Wang Juan laughed and said, “Sister, take a rest. I’ll cook two dishes, and they’ll be ready soon.”
Wang Fen stood up and tried to help, but Wang Juan refused. “Take a rest. This coal stove is different from our country stoves. I’ll teach you how to use it later.”
