Chapter 149
Chapter 149 : The Kidnapped Neighbor’s Child
Yu Yong had only eaten two pancakes that day, and his stomach was already growling.
“Hot boxed lunch! One dollar fifty a portion!”
“Give me six boxes!”
Yu Yong handed the lunch boxes to several of his men who were sitting apart. They all dug in, eating quickly.
The train swayed, and the sound of the rails echoed beneath them. Slowly, Yu Yong’s vision blurred. The dim light in front of him grew narrower until it was completely dark.
Suddenly, a basin of cold water splashed over him, chilling him to the bone. Yu Yong jerked his eyes open, the harsh white light blinding him. As his vision cleared, he saw two large hats in front of him!
When he moved, he realized his hands were cuffed behind his back. He looked around and saw the surroundings clearly his heart sank, but he pretended to be ignorant. “Let me go! What are you doing? Why are you arresting me? I haven’t done anything wrong! You’re abusing your power!”
Chen Weiming slammed his hand on the table, shouting, “Shut up! You human traffickers are always crying wolf!”
Qi Shaoqiang stepped forward, drawing a weapon from his waist. The mechanical sound of the gun clicking into place echoed as the cold barrel was aimed at his head.
Yu Yong shuddered at the cold sensation and immediately became compliant.
Chen Weiming shook the file in his hand, saying, “Explain everything in detail.”
“Comrade Public Security, I really didn’t do anything. What do you want me to explain? I just came to Haicheng to do some business.”
Yu Yong refused to admit it. His mind raced in those few seconds. After eating the lunch, he had slept like a log. Something had to have been wrong with that lunch.
Lao Mao and the others had eaten the same boxed lunches, so they might have all been caught by now.
But he hadn’t been holding the child when he was arrested. If he denied it, he might be able to clear himself of any responsibility.
Chen Weiming’s voice broke his thoughts. “Let’s start with how you met Wu Jinfeng!”
Yu Yong’s heart sank. They even knew about Wu Jinfeng. That bitch might give them all up.
—
A few hours earlier, Qi Shaoqiang had returned home for dinner. After Jiang Li saw the woman’s portrait, she became suspicious because her curly hair was a style that was only done at her shop.
“We’ve created this hairstyle here in Haicheng. You won’t find it anywhere else.”
Jiang Li swore solemnly, and Qi Shaoqiang became alert. “Then think hard. See if you remember anything relevant.”
“We think this woman is likely an informant working locally, scouting for human traffickers.”
Jiang Li looked at the portrait again but couldn’t recall any details. “This person’s hairstyle wasn’t done by me, but it must have come from our shop. Meifang or Sister Lin might recognize her.”
Qi Shaoqiang rode his bike to the salon. Ding Meifang was doing a customer’s hair. After looking at the portrait, she shook her head.
But Su Lin remembered. “A customer applied for a membership card, and their details are on file. I’ll check it.”
After searching for a while, Su Lin found it.
Wu Jinfeng, 35 years old, lives in Unit 2, Building 3, Railway Administration Family Compound, Jinxing Hutong. Note: There is a mole between her eyebrows.
“It’s her! Definitely.”
Ding Meifang glanced at the file and recalled, “This woman loves to show off. She always brags that her whole family works for the Railway Bureau and that they get great benefits.”
“Railway Bureau…” Qi Shaoqiang’s face changed. “Not good!”
He immediately threw the registration book back on the counter and rushed back to the office.
Chen Weiming made a quick decision and sent out his team. One group took the items and hid nearby, waiting to identify the suspects, while the other two groups were stationed at the train station.
By then, Wu Jinfeng had already arranged the train tickets. Chen Weiming had his comrades in the railway system check the tickets, and they confirmed there were six tickets, all heading to the next city.
To avoid alerting the suspects, the team waited until the human traffickers boarded the train. They coordinated with the conductor, and once the traffickers received the drugged lunch boxes, the operation was set into motion. Ultimately, they successfully rescued the five children.
Wu Jinfeng continued to struggle until the moment she was arrested, “Do you know who I am? My father is in the military region, and my husband works in the railway bureau. If you arrest the family members of the Railway Bureau without cause, I will sue you!”
“Wu Jinfeng, we have enough evidence to prove that you were involved in multiple trafficking cases, provided clues to traffickers, trafficked several children, and made a profit from it. Come with us!”
The onlookers were whispering among themselves. In the Railway Bureau family compound, two middle-aged men, looking worn and aged, suddenly leaped up upon hearing this and rushed through the police line.
“Wu Jinfeng, is it really you? Did you kidnap our Yanru?”
“You are so vicious. Our Old Zhang competed with your husband for the position of deputy director, and your husband lost. So you tripped him up, spreading rumors behind his back. You cursed us when we lost our child in the compound the first day, and then our Yanru disappeared the next day. Yanru has always been obedient and sensible. She never stays out late after school, and even when she goes to a classmate’s house, she always tells us in advance. That day, she said she was going to Xinhua Bookstore to buy books, but she didn’t come back until evening. We’ve been searching for three years, three long years. Yanru is such a good child, always ranking first in her class in exams. Where is my child? Tell me!”
The woman’s eyes were filled with tears, her gray hair disheveled with her excitement. She grabbed Wu Jinfeng by the throat, as though she wanted to tear her mouth open and force the truth about Yanru’s whereabouts from her.
“Comrade Public Security, what is going on?”
He Guoqing pushed through the crowd and stepped forward. “How could my wife have any connection with human traffickers? I don’t believe it.”
“I will kill you!” A man with a slightly hunched back grabbed He Guoqing by the collar and punched him. Blood spurted from his nose, and half of his glasses, which were as thick as the bottom of a wine bottle, broke and flew off.
He Guoqing pushed the man away, wiped the blood from his mouth, and said, “Zhang Jianye, you’re out of your mind!”
“He Guoqing, our competition was an adult matter. I didn’t expect you to be so heartless, having Wu Jinfeng help traffickers kidnap and sell my Yanru. We’ve been neighbors for over 20 years. Yanru, it’s your father who ruined you, getting you involved with such a worthless person. My Yanru!”
Zhang Jianye was filled with grievances, regret, and sadness, but had nowhere to vent his anger. He punched the concrete flower bed repeatedly, blood pouring from his hand.
“You’re talking nonsense! I watched Yanru grow up. I was worried sick when she went missing. I even helped you search for her everywhere. Now you’re slandering me with your mouth! I tell you, Zhang Jianye, this isn’t over. Let’s go to the leaders and seek justice!”
Qi Shaoqiang intervened, separating the people, while a female police officer restrained Wu Jinfeng. The crowd followed them to the police station.
Zhang Jianye and his wife stayed at the police station all afternoon, refusing to leave. The officers felt sorry for them and brought them food, but neither of them ate. They just stared at where the human traffickers were being held.
“Comrades, you should go back, eat, and rest,” one officer said.
