Chapter 24
Chapter 24
“This outfit looks so amazing, I’m crying!”
“Ahhhh! Qiqi! Just call me sister, and I’ll vote for you!”
Great! Another one has gone crazy.
He Qingqi’s face was dark, and she twitched the corner of her mouth.
Although her outfit was a bit of an image overhaul, it wasn’t that exaggerated, right?
Just as she was about to turn and complain to Zhuo Zhiwei, she saw the person dressed in a reserved style. The makeup artist added a beauty mark at the corner of her eye, adding a touch of sensuality to her otherwise cold face.
He Qingqi, momentarily dazed, watched as the person gently lifted the corner of her eye. The sensuality spread instantly, like a raging fire becoming more intense.
Zhuo Zhiwei lowered her eyes and laughed softly. Then she raised her head, her voice deliberately lowering, with a hint of huskiness: “Call me sister…”
Just now, He Qingqi had been mocking others, but now she stood there stunned, feeling her throat tighten.
Her lips twitched slightly, almost tempting her to call out.
Sister.
He Qingqi couldn’t help it. Zhuo Zhiwei hit her weak spot. She liked this type: extraordinarily beautiful, with an ethereal quality, yet occasionally exuding a hint of desire—not too much, just the right amount.
In the past, Fang Xuanyao had only fulfilled the first two criteria, yet she managed to win He Qingqi’s devotion for more than ten years. Zhuo Zhiwei met all the conditions perfectly. A few seconds of being dazed were normal.
Chai Xu, watching from the side, immediately understood. Laughing recklessly, he mocked, “Oh, look how smitten our little Qingqi is! Got hit, huh?”
Even Zhuo Zhiwei couldn’t help but laugh, her eyes smiling, and her usually calm gaze rippling with waves of joy.
She had just been watching the other contestants cause a ruckus and impulsively decided to tease He Qingqi, thinking the latter would handle it gracefully, either dismissing it or teasing back. She never expected such a reaction.
Dumbfounded and adorable.
Her heartbeat quickened, filled with a sudden sense of delight and a touch of romantic intrigue. She wondered what it would feel like to hear He Qingqi call her sister.
She couldn’t help but glare at Chai Xu.
He Qingqi snapped out of it, her face instantly turning red. She quickly swallowed the words on her lips, glancing at Zhuo Zhiwei. No way.
Then she looked at Chai Xu, narrowed her eyes, and her chest heaved. Furious, she kicked Chai Xu right on the butt: “You must be itching for a beating!”
The prep room fell silent instantly; everyone was wide-eyed and staring at the fierce He Qingqi, dressed in a skirt, who had just kicked someone. They swallowed hard.
It’s all a facade.
Chai Xu rubbed his buttocks, howling, “Can’t you maintain your image a bit longer? And you’re wearing a skirt; how can you kick people? Are you still an idol?”
“No! I’m your dad!”
“People are watching.”
“I’ll silence them!”
“Cameras are recording.”
“Delete it!”
Zhuo Zhiwei blinks. The little lioness was furious.
…
After a chaotic scene, He Qingqi finally stopped, raising her chin, nonchalantly adjusting her clothes, shaking her wrist, and walking ahead confidently, completely mismatched with her outfit.
Chai Xu, whimpering like a scolded wife, followed her once again onto the dream-filled stage.
Calming down.
The moment the lights came on, the seven boys and girls appeared directly before the audience. For the time being, He Qingqi captured the majority of the audience’s attention.
Today’s He Qingqi was unlike any other. She had dyed her favorite purplish-red hair back to black, and it hung obediently over her shoulders. She wore no eyeliner or bright lipstick.
Her temperament was also different than usual, restraining her domineering and fierce aura. Her skin was fair, and her figure was slim. She arched her eyebrows and smiled sweetly at the audience, looking as pure and soft as a school flower.
“Ah!” A girl who never missed a competition clutched her heart, moaning, and her gaze towards the stage was full of infatuation: “Qiqi looks so beautiful!”
“Little Qingqi! Mama loves you!”
The entire audience of girlfriend fans collectively transformed into mom fans, calling themselves “mama” with increasing sincerity.
Whimpering. Who wouldn’t love little Qingqi in this lovable form?
Half a minute later, the lights suddenly dimmed and changed colors.
The melancholic and slightly sad accompaniment began to play, causing the audience to stir and whisper.
“Hmm? What’s happening?”
“Is it a performance accident?”
“Did I remember wrong? Isn’t ‘When I’m Close to You’ a very sweet song?”
While the audience was still buzzing, He Qingqi started singing the first line. Her voice was low and mellow, with a hint of huskiness, lamenting like reciting a love poem.
There were no heart-wrenching high notes or dazzling dances, yet she instantly captured every audience member’s attention. The lingering, sticky sorrow in the song seemed to tell a story of unrequited love.
The audience’s hearts sank, and their gazes turned bittersweet, looking at He Qingqi as if she were that unattainable person from their school days.
He Qingqi sighed mockingly, “The struggle of love is such a commonplace thing, yet I still rush towards it like a moth to a flame, my heart pounding just like before.”
With her gentle sigh, Chai Xu stepped out of the synchronized dance, looking down at He Qingqi with eyes that seemed to hold a thousand unspoken words. However, he still brushed past her, like a boy who regrets missing out on life.
Su Chengcheng followed suit, reaching out her fingers towards Chai Xu, only to pull back in melancholy.
Finally, it was Chai Xu’s turn. With a slightly confused look in his eyes, he turned to look at He Qingqi’s back. His clear yet somewhat sad voice sounded as if he were wondering if he had done something wrong and why the girl in his heart had left him.
Artificial snow made of foam balls floated down from above, landing on the seven performers’ hair and clothes. He Qingqi opened her hand and caught a snowflake that drifted in front of her, gently blowing on it with a sorrowful gaze.
Her downcast, melancholic expression made the audience’s hearts ache for her.
In the middle, during the part without lyrics, six girls and boys started a fluid dance, with girls on one side and boys on the other. Chai Xu took the initiative to pull He Qingqi to the center, and the two of them communicated their story through their movements.
As the accompaniment transitioned, the second half officially began.
Jin Zhiyang hesitantly but eagerly approached the boy again, chasing after him. The boy was no longer as confident and arrogant as before; he was now smiling and waiting for her to walk home together.
The girl mustered up her courage and began to chase after the boy once more. The accompaniment gradually became brighter, and the audience’s familiar song “When I’m Close to You” returned. Qiu Ming, Wang Qiyu, and Zheng Xinnian each sang their sweet parts, with Chai Xu playing the role of a heartbreaker, teasingly flitting between them.
“Maybe I’ll love you even more tomorrow.”
They sang the song’s final line.
…
“Wow, they sang so well; I didn’t even dare to breathe loudly, afraid of disturbing them.”
“At first, I thought the show played the wrong accompaniment… I wonder who modified it. The transition was perfect.”
“The lyrics were the same as before, but they sounded like two completely different stories. He Qingqi’s group had some ideas.”
He Qingqi, along with the other six members, stood in the center of the stage once more.
He Qingqi bowed to the audience and, for the first time, cutely winked at them, smiling. “Hello everyone, I’m Qing Xiao Qi.”
“Ah!!!”
Her greeting was met with a wave of ecstatic screams.
Yan Huan: “Chai Xu, I remember that during rehearsals, all the mentors praised your group’s adaptation… Who came up with this adaptation?”
Standing at the center, Chai Xu, a splash of green among the flowers, pointed at He Qingqi and said, “The dance was choreographed by our captain, Qing Xiao Xi. The song was adapted by Wang Qiyu and Jin Zhiyang, with help from the others.”
He Qingqi added, “We also received help from Zhuo Zhiwei, Tao Jinghan, and her captain, Sui Tong Jie, from our dorm, as well as guidance from the five mentors.”
“So, were you satisfied with today’s performance, Qingqi?”
He Qingqi didn’t hesitate. “Of course not!”
“Not satisfied? Even after all that?” Yan Huan acted surprised and turned to the others. “Girls, your captain is quite strict!”
The contestants all nodded in agreement, looking pained.
He Qingqi raised her eyebrows and lifted her chin slightly higher than usual, scanning the golden sea of fans in the audience. It seemed like there were more fans than usual; she complained, “It’s all because of them!”
“They insisted on seeing me in a dress! They insisted on seeing me in a dress! Originally, I wanted to do the male steps and make Chai Xu wear the dress! Whenever we danced together, if there was a female costume, Chai Xu would wear it!”
Normally, when He Qingqi took such actions, they carried a sense of pride mixed with dominance. But today, she only seemed adorable and innocent, causing another round of screams from the audience.
After hearing what she said,
“Hahaha, Qing Xiao Qi, are you a devil, forcing Chai Xu to wear a dress?”
“Showing off his hairy legs and then coquettishly singing—is that what you mean? Hahaha.”
“Qing Xiao Xi’s words make it sound like they’ve known each other for a long time. But why would a naturally born girl make Chai Xiao Xu wear a dress?”
As if hearing the fans’ questions, He Qingqi explained, “Chai Xu was the shortest when he was little. The rest of us were all over 1.7 meters, and Chai Xu was just 1.6 meters. Furthermore, Chai Xu was really cute as a child; his brother wanted a sister, so he ended up wearing dresses more often than me. And I can’t wear dresses because I have to…*#%$.”
It’s not convenient for fighting.
Chai Xu quickly covered He Qingqi’s mouth, afraid she would blurt out something inappropriate.
Oh my god, remember, you’re an idol! Fighting is a black mark on your record!
He said fiercely yet cutely, “Stop! You guys aren’t all over 1.7 meters! You’re 1.67 meters!”
He Qingqi looked at him with pride and exclaimed, “I am still taller than you.”
She gestured from her feet to her head, “By a lot!”
Chai Xu pouted, not daring to be angry or say anything.
Unsurprisingly, He Qingqi led the votes, followed by the other groups’ center positions.
In the team vote, the scores were 351:300:253:96, with He Qingqi’s team leading by 51 votes over Tao Jinghan’s team, giving her the undisputed first place.
As soon as the performance ended, Chai Xu and the other four left the “偶时” program group, leaving the contestants with a sense of loss, especially since next week would see further eliminations.
