Chapter 80
Chapter 80
“Really not coming back with me?”
He Qingqi handed her suitcase to Lin Fan, tugging at Zhuo Zhiwei’s sleeve with a playful motion.
Pouting slightly, her eyes glistened as she began to feign vulnerability.
“No.”
Zhuo Zhiwei turned her face away, unable to hide the delight creeping into her eyes, and her lips twitched ever so slightly.
It sounded a bit willful.
Yet it seemed almost like a playful whine, which made it somewhat endearing.
Wang Qiyu blinked in confusion, her gaze momentarily startled, feeling a haze of emotions wash over her.
Subconsciously, she raised her hand to cover her heart, as if something had struck it.
Wasn’t that a bit outrageous…?
Such an unattainable face was now behaving so adorably.
Taking a deep breath, she looked toward He Qingqi, revealing a motherly smile.
“I believe in you, my dear.”
“Qiqi?” Cheng Yi tilted her head in confusion, tugging at her sleeve.
“What are you smiling about?”
Wang Qiyu quickly suppressed her warm smile, raised her fist to her mouth, and cleared her throat seriously. “Nothing.”
Cheng Yi was even more puzzled, but the usually obedient girl chose not to press further, simply blinking her big eyes. “Oh.”
“Really, really not coming?” He Qingqi persisted.
Zhuo Zhiwei had stopped responding, her small ears, hidden beneath her hair, quietly flushed with color.
She gently bit her lip, pinching the tip of her finger.
Each time she heard He Qingqi’s plea, her heart raced with joy.
But still… she felt a bit timid about facing her girlfriend’s parents.
They had just begun their relationship. Even though she knew she wanted to spend her life with He Qingqi, her family was unaware and might be displeased, thinking she was being too casual.
Zhuo Zhiwei understood that they were good people, but her excessive regard for He Qingqi made her reluctant to take that risk.
She set a goal for herself.
In a year.
By then, she would definitely be holding He Qingqi’s hand in front of her family.
“I’m her girlfriend.”
Just thinking about that scenario made Zhuo Zhiwei’s heart flutter, a smile curving her lips.
He Qingqi noticed her seriousness, understanding it wasn’t mere shyness, and let out a slight sigh of regret, not pressing the matter further.
Last night, her grandmother had called, saying she missed her after a long time apart and encouraged her to spend a day at home while on this work trip.
Her grandmother’s kind voice had made her feel sentimental, recalling the somber day of Mr. Liu’s funeral, and she had agreed with a heavy heart.
“Take care of yourself,” He Qingqi said earnestly.
Tao Jinghan, who had been quiet, could no longer stay silent.
“Enough, enough.” She scoffed, stepping between them. “Just one day! You two will be apart for just one day! Do you understand?”
Tao Jinghan stared wide-eyed, raising her index finger in disbelief at the two of them.
“Wéiwéi.” He Qingqi feigned grievance, pulling on Zhuo Zhiwei’s clothing.
He Qingqi couldn’t let anyone bully her precious little lion!
Zhuo Zhiwei graciously took He Qingqi’s hand, leaning in closely and wrapping her arms around her waist, while casting a vigilant glare at Tao Jinghan.
He Qingqi encircled her shoulders, pouting with both eyes narrowed in unison.
Tao Jinghan: “…”
Did being single mean having no rights?
However, just a few seconds later, she felt a flicker of joy, even a bit of schadenfreude.
Watching He Qingqi wave reluctantly to Zhuo Zhiwei as she got into Lin Fan’s car.
It was already four or five in the afternoon, and the weather had turned cooler. He Qingqi shivered slightly as the sea breeze wafted in through the car window, prompting her to roll it up.
“It’s a bit chilly now,” Lin Fan remarked, glancing at the rearview mirror with a smile.
“Yeah.” He Qingqi wrapped her arms around herself, rubbing them for warmth. “My arms are freezing.”
As a competent life assistant, Lin Fan thoughtfully turned on the air conditioning, contemplating for a moment before pointing to the backseat. “I remember there’s your trench coat from last year in the car; it might help keep your legs warm.”
Through the rearview mirror, she caught a glimpse of He Qingqi’s pale thighs exposed to the air.
“Check; it should be back there.”
“It’s fine, no need to bother.” He Qingqi was too lazy to move, leaning against the window, her eyelids heavy, stifling a yawn.
Slowly closing her eyes, she said, “Anyway, once I get out of the car, I’ll be home in just a few steps.”
Upon hearing this, Lin Fan didn’t press further.
In this vast world, the boss’s word was law.
As they got closer to home, He Qingqi, feeling drowsy, barely cracked her eyes open, inadvertently catching sight of a figure at the door, instantly wide awake, her brows furrowing.
She opened the car door.
“Fang Xuanyao?”
He Qingqi asked in disbelief, “What are you doing here?”
The familiar voice rang in her ears, and Fang Xuanyao appeared dazed with surprise, her pupils slightly dilating.
Unable to contain herself, she turned around, only to meet the guarded and disgusted gaze of someone.
Suddenly reminded of that person’s harsh tone, as if coming to settle a score.
They were no longer what they used to be.
It felt as if a bucket of cold water had been thrown over her, chilling her to the bone.
Fang Xuanyao shivered, momentarily stunned, her eyes growing unfocused.
She forced a smile that didn’t quite look genuine. “Qiqi.”
“Don’t call me that.” He Qingqi reiterated, her brows furrowing even tighter.
A shiver ran down her spine; meeting this person felt like betraying Zhuo Zhiwei.
The thought made He Qingqi uneasy.
But then again, she hadn’t initiated the meeting, and her back straightened with newfound resolve.
Lin Fan promptly found the beige trench coat and handed it to He Qingqi, whispering, “Qingqi, I’m leaving now. I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning.”
He Qingqi nodded, but her gaze remained fixed on Fang Xuanyao, subtly observing her with caution.
She seemed to have… changed quite a bit.
Her complexion was darker, she appeared thinner, and her demeanor had settled. Compared to their previous encounters, there was no trace of anxiety or sorrow, as if she had found a new direction in life.
What could that be?
He Qingqi thought warily.
Could she be up to no good again…?
“I’m sorry.” Fang Xuanyao suddenly lowered her head.
He Qingqi felt a bit dazed. “What… what for?”
What was she apologizing for?
For calling her Qiqi or for what happened in their past?
He Qingqi’s gaze gradually grew cold, her lips pressed into a straight line. “If it’s about calling me Qiqi, then I accept that.”
Fang Xuanyao bit her lip, letting out a sorrowful chuckle, yet she said no more. She had long lost the right to apologize, hadn’t she?
“What are you doing here?” He Qingqi asked again.
“Aren’t you abroad?”
So she knew…
Fang Xuanyao suddenly looked up at her, a hint of delight in her eyes. “Qiqi… how did you know?”
Her expression darkened again, a light mockery escaping her lips, realizing she could also have a humbling day.
He Qingqi’s heart ached for the ten years she had endured such treatment.
“I’m sorry.”
She repeated silently in her heart, even if that person wouldn’t accept it, she had to say it.
“I heard it from Chai Xu and the others,” He Qingqi replied nonchalantly.
Fang Xuanyao sensed that she truly didn’t care, though her heart quietly protested; it hurt a little.
“I… I’ll come back to see you all before I leave. I’m leaving tomorrow.”
She added, “I won’t come back ever again.”
Upon hearing this, He Qingqi’s eyes widened in shock. “What… never again…?”
She couldn’t quite grasp her feelings at that moment, breathing a little harder, her eyes slightly widening.
Her heart felt empty, heavy as if it were sinking, yet she sensed it could be a good thing.
Severing ties completely could be the perfect ending to their relationship, a precious gift to each other.
She knew this well; her resentment and anger could never fully overshadow the bond they had shared since childhood.
He Qingqi remained silent for a moment. “… Safe travels.”
“Thank you.” Fang Xuanyao smiled, a sense of relief washing over her.
She had stood there every afternoon for the past few days, counting today as the fifth.
Surely someone had noticed her. Five days of waiting just for a brief encounter; if Wang Qiyu’s feelings weren’t taken into account, the three men inside would surely soften.
Fang Xuanyao thought confidently.
And as expected.
Not long after He Qingqi went inside, He Qingzhou opened the door, his gaze downcast.
“Come in.”
Fang Xuanyao’s eyes sparkled with hope, instantly covered by a sheen of tears as she choked out a soft “yes,” overwhelmed with joy.
What Fang Xuanyao discussed with them, He Qingqi didn’t
know.
Just the usual apologies and pleas.
She couldn’t be bothered to listen.
Instead, she lay on her bed, chatting with her girlfriend.
Time passed, and someone gently knocked on her door, the motion tender.
He Qingqi paused, her hands freezing mid-motion.
The moment the knock came, she recognized who it was.
Should she open the door?
It was just a farewell…
Besides, Fang Xuanyao would probably leave soon. She wanted to ask her about what happened after she died in her past life.
How were her father, brother, and grandmother?
And… Zhuo Zhiwei.
Was she happy? Did she eat well, sleep well, and take care of herself…?
He Qingqi’s gaze flickered, her heart swelling with bittersweet feelings.
She licked her lips, her eyes landing on the lit screen of her phone, mustering her courage.
He Qingqi: Wéiwéi
Wéiwéi: Yes?
He Qingqi: I have something to tell you.
Wéiwéi: Go ahead.
He Qingqi: Fang Xuanyao is at my door.
Silence fell on the other end.
He Qingqi’s heart raced with anxiety, and soon her phone rang with a familiar number. She answered immediately.
“She went to your house?” Zhuo Zhiwei’s voice was icy, immediately sounding accusatory, tinged with annoyance.
He Qingqi awkwardly rubbed her nose, explaining, “She recently went to Africa as a volunteer. She told me she’s not coming back.”
“I didn’t mean to meet her,” He Qingqi said softly, feeling inexplicably guilty.
Zhuo Zhiwei struggled to contain her rising jealousy, forcing her mind to settle, her last shred of rationality prompting her to ask, “So she’s here to say goodbye?”
He Qingqi listened closely and affirmed, “Yes, she’s still knocking on my door.”
“I heard it.” Zhuo Zhiwei said.
He Qingqi felt a flutter of panic, quickly trying to placate her. “But I’m your property now, so should I open the door?”
Zhuo Zhiwei was silent for a moment. “Go ahead.”
“Really?” He Qingqi asked in disbelief, doubting her words.
“Really.” Zhuo Zhiwei emphasized, “It’s just a goodbye.”
He Qingqi had not expected this to go so smoothly. Given what she had learned about Zhuo Zhiwei over the past few days, she thought she would at least hang up once.
Her heart swelled with sweetness; she felt Zhuo Zhiwei was so good to her. With a heavy “yes,” she even blew a kiss through the phone. “Wéiwéi, you’re the best!”
Zhuo Zhiwei instinctively covered her ears, her cheeks flushing, her heart racing a few beats faster as they exchanged a few lighthearted words.
Once the call ended, she gazed blankly into space for a while before laughing softly.
“What a sweet talker. You just want to open the door yourself, don’t you?”
Shaking her head, her smile faded, her lips pressed into a straight line.
Although she knew they were just saying goodbye, her heart still felt… a bit heavy.
It seemed her willfulness had not yet been fully tempered.
Zhuo Zhiwei tightened her grip on her phone, her brows knitting together.
