Chapter 88
Chapter 88
Not long after, Qiu Ming rushed back from the bathroom in a hurry, taking over Tao Jinghan’s work.
Tao Jinghan handed the person over to her, listening to Jin Zhiyang muttering something under her breath. Qiu Ming tilted her head slightly, a large question mark almost visibly forming above her head.
Hesitating for a moment, she asked, “What… is she saying?”
Tao Jinghan shrugged, wearing an expression of equal confusion. Looking down at the silly girl giggling foolishly, she couldn’t help but smile softly. Her heart was filled with gratitude, yet a sense of melancholy suddenly surfaced.
She still felt guilty toward those fans who had accompanied her through the toughest times in a foreign country, those who gave her the strength to stand up again when she collapsed in the practice room, completely exhausted.
She had debuted, but not in the country where they had waited for her.
She had claimed the first spot, but not in the group they had been anticipating for three years.
Such is life—always filled with bittersweet moments and endless drama. You never know what might happen next.
Or perhaps, she had simply become a fleeting regret in their conversations, nothing more. The entertainment industry moves faster than lightning, with new faces constantly stepping into the spotlight. How many, even among the most devoted like Jin Zhiyang, would chase her all the way to China?
She sighed lightly. “Take good care of her.”
Tao Jinghan blinked her slightly cool eyes, pointed toward the balcony, and said, “I’m going to get some air. If you need me, just call.”
Qiu Ming nodded, her attention entirely drawn to the flushed face of Jin Zhiyang in her arms. Curious about the words that kept pouring out of her mouth, she wondered, “What exactly is she saying?”
It was all gibberish.
But Chinese was still more pleasant to the ear.
…
Closing the door revealed a completely different world. Inside, the people partied wildly, while outside, those who stood in the sparse starlight remained silent and somewhat confused. Other than the faint sound of waves and the wind howling past, it was excessively quiet.
Tao Jinghan lazily leaned on the railing, her slender fingers holding a glass of red wine. She gazed at the dark, silent sky, occasionally sipping the wine, lost in thought.
The sea breeze of the autumn night was a bit chilly, but she wasn’t one to prioritize style over comfort. She had draped a coat over her elegant evening gown, which looked a little strange but felt warm.
It seemed someone was approaching. There was a faint sound at the door handle—quiet, but in the stillness of the night, it was particularly abrupt. Tao Jinghan glanced around the small space, hesitating slightly.
Who could it be?
Should she leave?
She had come here to find some peace. If someone she wasn’t familiar with entered and they were stuck in this cramped space together…
Maybe she should just go.
She wasn’t in the mood to deal with anyone. Pretending to smile when she didn’t want to would be exhausting.
Just then, the door opened, but it wasn’t the stranger she had imagined. Tao Jinghan froze on the spot, her blood, which had only just started flowing again, suddenly turning cold.
“…Why are you here?” She frowned slightly, her voice hoarse, half-rejecting and half-questioning.
Bian Sui Tong had long known about Tao Jinghan’s resentment toward her, but her heart still ached at the sight of it. She bit her lip, hesitated for a moment, and gently closed the door. “I saw you come out, and I wanted to check on you,” she said softly.
Tao Jinghan blinked and, after a brief moment, let out a faint laugh. Shaking her head, she forced herself to look away. “What’s there to check on?”
With that, she turned her head again, staring back at the quiet night sky.
“I… I missed you,” Bian Sui Tong nervously clenched her fingers, summoning all her courage to finally say what was in her heart.
“You missed me?” Tao Jinghan murmured, repeating the words. She had been let down too many times to dare think much of it, but sometimes, thoughts still ran wild.
She couldn’t help but wonder—was it as a friend? A sister? Or… something more?
Bian Sui Tong bit her slightly frozen lip and softly uttered a clear “Mm.” She was wearing only a backless evening dress, and the cold wind mercilessly lashed her bare back, sweeping across every inch of her body.
She should have been used to it. After all, being an idol wasn’t easy. Dancing in short sleeves and shorts in the dead of winter was normal.
That was when her idol discipline came into play. No matter how cold, she had to smile and sing clearly while performing.
But now, standing next to this person, she felt vulnerable, unlike herself. That “Mm” came out with a slight tremble, and her teeth began to chatter.
Tao Jinghan frowned, unconsciously glancing at her. Seeing the pale skin that had turned cold, she felt a strange stir from deep inside.
Was she cold?
Her heart softened, and she took off her coat to hand it to her.
“No need,” Bian Sui Tong turned her face away, her voice tinged with a bit of childishness. Her jealousy was about to overflow, and the anger in her heart was nearly consuming her whole. “Who knows if it has another woman’s scent on it.”
Tao Jinghan blinked slowly, her thoughts flashing back to the moment she had hugged Jin Zhiyang. She hesitated, about to explain… but then her face gradually cooled. She found Bian Sui Tong’s anger unreasonable. After all, she had rejected her so coldly back then, so why act like this now?
What did it mean?
She wasn’t Bian Sui Tong’s property.
Ridiculous.
“…Fine,” she said expressionlessly, withdrawing the coat.
Bian Sui Tong saw that she was upset and instinctively grabbed her arm, her voice anxious. “That’s not what I meant!”
Hearing her feeble explanation, Tao Jinghan’s lips curled into a sarcastic smile. So this was the girl she had once been infatuated with. Without the filter of admiration and the passion of a secret crush, all that was left was the rawness of human nature.
Selfishness.
Even if you don’t like someone, it’s hard to be comfortable seeing them admired by others.
Bian Sui Tong was like that too.
But… Tao Jinghan’s eyes filled with sorrow. Even though her perfect goddess image had been shattered, why did she still like her so much?
When would she finally forget her? When could she be herself again…?
“I—I!” Bian Sui Tong’s voice grew higher and higher until, finally, she shut her eyes tightly and blurted out, “I like you!”
The sudden confession exploded like thunder in the night sky. The air became deathly still, as if even their heartbeats had paused.
A cold wind brushed against her cheek, and Tao Jinghan shivered, blinking slowly, her brow furrowed. “What did you say?” she asked, wondering if she had drunk too much and was hallucinating.
Bian Sui Tong’s heart began racing. She lowered her gaze, her ears gradually turning red. “I… I said…”
“You like me?”
Her voice was cold, tinged with confusion, as though trying to understand something incomprehensible.
The words struck Bian Sui Tong like a bucket of ice water. Her earlier shyness and hope were instantly frozen. She stood there, stunned, unable to speak as she stared at the calm girl in front of her.
She had imagined countless times how Tao Jinghan would react to her confession—perhaps overwhelmed with emotion, rekindling their relationship, or maybe hurt and unwilling to forgive her. But never this.
Calm, as though she hadn’t even been the one confessed to.
Tao Jinghan lowered her eyes, thinking for a few seconds. “Does Zhou Canxian know you’re saying this to me?”
Bian Sui Tong, thinking she was concerned about Zhou Canxian, hurriedly interrupted her. “We’ve broken up!”
Broken up?
Tao Jinghan didn’t believe a word of it. If she really liked her, why had she said those hurtful things that day? And what about her boyfriend?
Maybe it was just guilt or confusion… or maybe it was because of her breakup with Zhou Canxian… Tao Jinghan stopped herself from indulging in those dark thoughts.
Instead, she wearily rubbed her forehead. “What does that have to do with me?”
“Really, Sui Tong, just forget about what happened that day. Keep treating me as your teammate, like Shu Yi.”
“Or,” Tao Jinghan’s heart twisted painfully, “you can treat me as your business partner.”
“If you need, I can act with you.”
“Or, we can stop contacting each other…” Tao Jinghan paused. “Just for now. I’ll still keep my promise to you.”
“When you get married, I’ll still be your bridesmaid… But for now, I’m a bit cold. Keep the coat.”
She spoke softly, no longer looking at Bian Sui Tong, who was standing there with her head lowered in silence. Tao Jinghan draped the coat over her shoulders, took a few steps forward, and walked away.
“Idiot!” Bian Sui Tong sobbed quietly, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably as she broke down like a child.
The coat was thrown to the ground with a dull thud. Tao Jinghan’s heart felt heavy, but she gritted her teeth and didn’t turn back.
Yet a few strands of doubt still lingered.
Did she really like her?
Bian Sui Tong stubbornly watched her walk away, suddenly slapping herself and muttering, “Idiot.”
…
As the celebration party continued into the later stages, the lights suddenly went out, plunging the room into darkness. Everyone began whispering.
“Is there a blackout?”
“What’s going on?”
Zhuo Zhiwei anxiously moved her fingers, calling out, “Qiqi?”
Her Qiqi was too picky with her food, and because of that, she had a bit of night blindness. They had been together all evening, but Qiqi had just gone to get something to eat, and now the lights were out.
She felt worried.
“Where are you, Qiqi?”
She turned on the flashlight on her phone, casting a weak glow as she scanned the room. “Qiqi?”
Flickering candlelight illuminated the room, and the soft orange glow revealed a figure pushing a cart. The person’s eyes sparkled as they gazed at her, their gentle look making it seem like they were the only two people in the world. Even the scar on their brow looked tender in the candlelight.
“Happy birthday…”
As the person sang, the surrounding crowd began clapping along to the rhythm. He Qingqi pushed the cart slowly forward, stopping right in front of Zhuo Zhiwei.
Zhuo Zhiwei stared at her, a little dazed, her eyes shimmering. In truth, she hadn’t celebrated her birthday in a long time. To her, this day had meant nothing before today. After today, it would simply mark the day they won their first title.
There was nothing particularly special about it, yet for some reason, she felt deeply moved. Her heart was bubbling, as if it was still boiling over. In He Qingqi’s eyes, she saw care and affection—not just as her girlfriend but as her family.
“Thank you.” Her throat tightened, her lips lifting into a bright smile, one that outshone the sun, though her eyes were filled with shimmering tears, rippling like a lake.
He Qingqi raised an eyebrow, smiling roguishly as she opened her arms.
Zhuo Zhiwei stepped forward, stood on her toes, and gave He Qingqi a hug.
Whispering into her ear, she asked, “So… where’s my gift?”
