Chapter 91
Chapter 91
“Is there… something you want to talk about?”
The sound of Bian Suitong’s nervous breathing and heartbeat, amplified through the phone, sent a tingling sensation through Tao Jinghan’s ears. The wind gently lifted her hair as she held a cigarette, glowing with a crimson ember, between her lips. She reached up, tucking her hair behind her ear, her gaze heavy as she stared into the dark distance.
She blinked slowly, her voice calm. “Where are you?”
Before Bian Suitong could respond, Tao Jinghan went ahead and gave the name of the hotel and her room number.
Tao Jinghan lowered her eyes, her fingers tapping lightly on the balcony railing. “If… you meant what you said tonight, I’ll be here waiting.”
She glanced at her watch and, after a pause, added softly, “I’ll go to bed at eleven. I won’t wait forever.”
“No one waits forever,” she murmured to herself.
Bian Suitong’s breath caught. A surge of indescribable joy hit her, as if the heavens had dropped an enormous gift into her lap, leaving her dizzy and at a loss for words. “I-I know, I know. You’re willing to see me, and I… I…”
Bian Suitong’s breathing quickened. Afraid that Tao Jinghan would change her mind, she rushed to say, “Wait for me. I’ll be right there.”
And with that, she hung up.
Tao Jinghan stared blankly at the phone in her hand for a moment, her fingers twitching slightly. Regret washed over her. If two people have drifted apart, why try to force them back together? Must they fight until only one remains standing, their relationship consumed in flames?
But she couldn’t let go of the feelings she had once cherished, the love she had nurtured so carefully. To watch it wither away in silence was something she couldn’t accept.
A small, bitter smile tugged at her lips.
Maybe she deserved this.
Two, maybe three minutes later, there was a knock at the door.
Tao Jinghan stubbed out her cigarette, slipping into her slippers. Unhurriedly, she called out, “Coming!”
Sure enough, it was Bian Suitong standing at the door, dressed in her pajamas, clutching a jacket in her hands. Her gaze was intense as she looked at Tao Jinghan, her face a mix of a teary smile and radiant beauty, like cherry blossoms in bloom.
Tao Jinghan felt her heart skip a beat. Her eyes flickered momentarily, but she quickly masked her surprise, her expression indifferent as she stepped aside. “Come in.”
Bian Suitong froze for a second, her excitement gradually fading. Why was Jinghan reacting like this?
She had imagined that they would embrace, confessing their feelings to each other…
Suddenly, she realized this might not be about forgiveness. Maybe this was their final meeting, the last time they would see each other.
Bian Suitong clenched her teeth, her jaw trembling with suppressed emotion. She stepped into Tao Jinghan’s room, her nails digging into her palms. She heard the door click shut behind her, and her body instinctively flinched, as if startled.
Once, they had been roommates as trainees. Being in the same room shouldn’t have been an issue, yet Bian Suitong had never felt as nervous as she did now. It was as though she were awaiting judgment.
She lowered her head, her fingers tightly clenched, her entire body tense and trembling.
Tao Jinghan frowned slightly, her gaze falling on the jacket Bian Suitong was clutching. “Are you cold?”
As if infected by the thought, Tao Jinghan shivered too, running her hand over her sleepwear, which felt cold against her skin.
“No,” Bian Suitong shook her head and handed the jacket to Tao Jinghan. “Thank you for the jacket.”
Tao Jinghan paused, realizing it was indeed the jacket she had worn earlier that evening. She chuckled softly. “I thought…”
You didn’t want it anymore.
Just like how you didn’t want me anymore.
But she didn’t say it out loud.
Perhaps it was the late hour, making her unusually vulnerable. Tao Jinghan suddenly felt a wave of sadness. She had survived countless days and nights of heartache, where the pain had become a constant companion. By now, she had grown numb to it…
Nothing but pointless self-inflicted suffering.
Bian Suitong bit her lip. “I didn’t yell at you when I said that rude comment.”
Tao Jinghan was silent for a moment. “…I know.”
Otherwise, the jacket wouldn’t have been tossed on the ground; it would’ve been thrown at her.
“Jinghan,” Bian Suitong suddenly found a surge of courage. She lifted her head, her tear-filled eyes locking onto Tao Jinghan. Grabbing her arm, her voice broke with pain, hoarse as if soaked in blood. “I regret it.”
“I shouldn’t have said those things back then… I do like you. I was just so scared, so I lashed out.”
Tao Jinghan tilted her head thoughtfully, then stared at her, the soft glow of the orange light blurring Bian Suitong’s enviable skin tone, making the tear-filled eyes look even more pitiful.
She pondered for a moment before asking, “What are you so afraid of?”
The question hung in the air, stopping everything for a moment.
Tao Jinghan’s expression remained unchanged as she watched Bian Suitong, her teary gaze stubbornly fixed on her.
She said nothing.
Tao Jinghan sighed softly. “Is it that all girls from your country are like this… reserved? Why is it that you never want to say what’s on your mind? You always hold back.”
“Do you know? The last time you asked me if I was mad at you, I lied. You completely messed me up, and just when I was ready to let you stay in my life, you walked away. And the reason you gave… was because we weren’t some commercialized couple?”
“What are you afraid of? If you don’t tell me, how am I supposed to know if you really like me?” She took a deep breath. “And how am I supposed to know if I’m just a backup plan?”
Bian Suitong’s eyes widened in shock. “You’re not!”
“Then what am I?” Tao Jinghan pressed on, only realizing afterward that she was being a bit aggressive. She gave a wry smile.
What was she doing? It’s not like she had to be with Bian Suitong.
Shaking her head, she said, “Forget it. If you don’t want to talk about it, don’t.”
Just as the words left her mouth, Bian Suitong, panicked, grabbed her arm. “I do want to talk.”
She knew that if she stepped back this time, it would be the end for them.
The truth was, how many people would defy the world for love? Tao Jinghan had already forgiven her once; that in itself was a gift. And besides, she could’ve taken the easy way out…
“You know,” Bian Suitong bit her lip, “where I come from, there’s still…”
She paused, swallowed, and with great effort, forced out the words that had once been so difficult for her to say. Her voice was hoarse. “Homophobia.”
“My mother may be Chinese, but she grew up over there…”
“I was raised with the idea that I should grow up and marry a nice man, just like most people in the world, and live an ordinary life.”
“Honestly, before you confessed to me, I never even thought that what we had could be considered romantic love.” Bian Suitong let out a self-deprecating laugh. “I guess I’m pretty dense…”
“I’m scared of the judgment from those around us, of my parents’ anger and disappointment, of becoming the target of public scorn.” Bian Suitong’s voice grew more emotional, her breathing increasingly erratic as her tears began to fall. “I’m afraid that even if we try our hardest to stay together, in the end, we’ll still be torn apart by the world.”
For some reason, Tao Jinghan felt a sudden wave of emotion swell within her. Her eyes stung, and her chest tightened. She blinked rapidly, trying to hold back her tears.
Her throat trembled slightly. “It’s me who didn’t think enough about your situation.”
“And what about now? Are you still afraid?”
“I am.” Bian Suitong’s smile was bitter, her expression serious as her tears continued to fall. “But I love you, and I want to try.”
Tao Jinghan’s heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t hold back anymore. She stepped forward, embracing Bian Suitong tightly, just like she had done so many times before. Her hand gently stroked Bian’s hair, listening to the beating of her heart.
Bian Suitong blinked in surprise, her tumultuous emotions giving way to a sense of vulnerability. In the next moment, she clung tightly to Tao Jinghan’s shirt, curling up in her arms. Tears flowed freely, soaking into Tao Jinghan’s clothes.
The front of Tao Jinghan’s shirt was drenched, and the soft sound of Bian’s quiet sobs filled the room. Despite her efforts to hold them back, the sobs still slipped past her lips.
Tao Jinghan felt Bian’s trembling in her arms, and for a moment, she had the urge to kiss her.
But a sudden gust of wind blew through, chilling her to the bone, clearing her mind along with the cold air.
Once, she had been blinded by impulsive love, confessing without considering Bian Suitong’s upbringing or her circumstances. Back then, her mind had been filled with nothing but thoughts of love. Now, however, reality had started to sink in, and she had learned to consider other things as well.
Like the fact that they were from different countries.
Or perhaps, after nearly a year of separation, her love for Bian wasn’t as overwhelming as it once had been. The grief that had once consumed her thoughts had settled over time, no longer causing the same heart-wrenching pain. It was still there, but now it was a faint ache, something she could endure. And it made her realize that, for many people—including herself—love wasn’t a necessity.
She had already returned to China.
There was no turning back.
Now it was up to Bian Suitong.
If they were destined to part, Tao Jinghan would have rather they never started at all.
Tao Jinghan spoke softly, her tone calm. “Have you thought about what we’d do if we were together? Would you come to China to live with me?”
At her words, the blood seemed to freeze in Bian Suitong’s veins, her entire body stiffening. She didn’t respond for a long moment. It only now occurred to her that they were, in fact, from different countries…
Her mind had been a chaotic mess for days, focused solely on sorting out her feelings for Tao Jinghan and mustering the courage to win her back. It had taken all her strength just to do that.
She hadn’t thought about what came next, hadn’t planned for the future. She’d only vaguely known that she wanted to fight for them.
But Tao Jinghan’s question signaled something to her. Bian pulled away from the embrace, her tear-filled eyes bright as she asked, “So… you’re willing to forgive me and be with me?”
Tao Jinghan’s voice was sincere. “If you can figure these things out.”
Bian Suitong bit her lip, unable to immediately give an answer.
“Never mind, I won’t pressure you. We have time.” Tao Jinghan sighed when Bian didn’t respond, exhaling deeply. “Take your time to think it over. I don’t need an answer right now.”
She placed her hands on her hips, smiling gently. “If you gave me an answer right away, I’d have to doubt whether it was genuine. Think about it carefully—I’ll wait for you.”
Bian Suitong was reassured by her words, her gaze softening. Playfully, she teased, “Didn’t you say you wouldn’t wait for me?”
Tao Jinghan corrected her, “I won’t wait forever.”
Since Bian was staying at the same hotel, and her room had two beds, she asked if she could stay the night.
In the dark, listening to the rhythmic breathing of the person beside her, Bian Suitong bit her lip, her eyes wide open, unable to sleep.
Would she… move to China?
…
The next morning, sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, falling gently on the two women, who were lying in bed, wrapped in each other’s arms.
The light was slightly blinding.
Zhuo Zhiwei furrowed her brow, slowly opening her eyes. For a moment, she was dazed, but then the memories of the previous night flooded her mind.
She had been brought into He Qingqi’s home, and then…
She didn’t dare to think any further. Zhuo Zhiwei bit her lip, her cheeks flushing red with embarrassment.
Quietly, she sifted through the pile of clothes scattered on the floor, looking for her underwear, when something long and box-like caught her attention.
Curious, she picked it up and took a glance. Her face immediately turned bright red, and she tossed it away like it was burning hot.
Only one thought echoed in her mind.
G-Spot Invader + Pearl.
Damn He Qingqi!
Blushing furiously, Zhuo Zhiwei quickly put on her underwear, before angrily kicking He Qingqi in the butt, who was still lying there, back turned toward her.
