Chapter 1393: Chapter 1463: Deeper Meaning
"How come you’re still not asleep?"
"Can’t sleep." Gu Yunbo sat cross-legged on the chair opposite her. "Still working on the script?"
"Yeah!" Sheng Ning frowned in frustration. "I don’t know how to compose, so I still need to find a composer."
"That’s easy. In Country M, as long as you’ve got money, there’s nothing you can’t get done." This was a capitalist country where money was king.
"But my standards are very very very high. At the very least, it has to be a master-level person."
"Then don’t look at me. I only know masters at fighting, want one of those?"
Sheng Ning was amused by her. "Ai! Tell me, what exactly is your relationship with Meng Fan?" She put down the pen, propped her chin with her hand, and stared fixedly at Gu Yunbo.
She’d always been curious about Gu Yunbo’s relationship with Meng Fan, but they weren’t that close before, so she hadn’t had the nerve to ask. Now the timing, place, and people were all just right, so she finally asked.
"No real relationship." Gu Yunbo’s eyes flickered.
"Forget it if you don’t want to talk." She’d already prepared herself for Gu Yunbo to refuse. Everyone has stories they don’t want to tell, just like her.
She had never told anyone about her Rebirth, and in this life she planned to let that secret rot in her heart forever.
"Then tell me, what kind of person was Meng Fan really? By the time I entered the General Union, he had already died in the line of duty, I’ve never even seen him once!" Sheng Ning’s eyes turned starry. "A man that outstanding must’ve been extremely charming, right?"
"Stop dreaming." Thinking of Meng Fan made Gu Yunbo’s chest twist with pain; she paused a moment before it eased. Then she raised her hand and gave Sheng Ning a smack on the head, almost sending her forehead into the edge of the table.
"You’re already surrounded by wolves and you can still laugh." Gu Yunbo added insult to injury. "If I were you, I’d be thinking about how to strike first. Otherwise you won’t even know how you died."
"You mean the Feng Family?"
"Who else could it be but the Feng Family? I finally got to see what they mean by a wealthy clan’s grudges." Gu Yunbo leaned back in the chair, sitting there in a domineering sprawl as she analyzed, "Today at the Feng Family I heard and saw a lot of interesting things, and in that whole bunch of young masters and ladies, there wasn’t a single good one."
"Then which of them do you think is kind at heart, and which is vicious?" Sheng Ning shot back.
Gu Yunbo let out a cold laugh. "Stop fantasizing. If you ask me, not a single one of them has a kind heart. The one jumping around the most is the fourth young master, Feng Jianxi, but the harder he jumps, the more miserable he’ll die in the end. The one who looks the most pleased with herself is the heir, Feng Zhenzhen, but she’s not going to make it either. That heir position is just a castle in the air, a flower that’ll wither as soon as it blooms."
"Then who has the highest chance?" Sheng Ning’s gaze burned into her.
"You." Gu Yunbo gave her a meaningful look. Her eyes swept over Sheng Ning’s fingers and saw that the Emperor Green Ring she’d worn during the day was no longer there, and only then did that sliver of doubt in her heart slowly fade.
Sheng Ning was her only friend, so she really didn’t want to have misjudged her and picked a ruthless, vicious woman.
People, well, are all selfish. Even if you’re ruthless yourself, you still don’t want your friends to be the same type as you.
"Right now you’re the Feng Family heir everyone is scrambling to curry favor with. Tsk tsk... I really don’t know what Mr. Feng was thinking. Out of so many descendants he didn’t choose, and instead picked you, an outsider."
"I don’t think that was Granduncle’s true intention." Sheng Ning had a gut feeling that Granduncle was playing a game of chess—a very big game. People like them were nothing but his pieces.
