Chapter 1706: Chapter 1783: Narrow Paths Meet
"Who is Xu Qigang?" The newly arrived rookie had never even heard the name, his face full of confusion.
Probably because the two of them had been standing at the door too long, they caught the section chief’s attention. He hurried out, ready to scold them, and was greeted head-on by a smiling face.
Sheng Ning knew this section chief; she used to run into him all the time coming in and out.
"The Union Flower..." The section chief’s eyes went wide. His hand, pointing at Sheng Ning, kept trembling. Then he realized this gesture was impolite, quickly reined in his expression, and greeted her.
"Hello, Comrade Sheng Ning."
"Hello." Sheng Ning returned the greeting. Because she wasn’t wearing the work uniform, she felt a bit self-conscious. "May I go in?"
"Yes, yes." The section chief enthusiastically let her in.
The rookie followed behind, asking curiously, "Section chief, who is Xu Qigang?" He was so envious—this guy actually managed to marry such a beautiful wife.
This time the section chief couldn’t even be bothered to hit him. Why was he so unlucky that he always got stuck with this kind of blockhead?
He actually had the nerve to ask who Xu Qigang was!
"You haven’t been in the General Union long, so it’s one thing if you don’t know her, but you’re asking me who Xu Qigang is? You really don’t know?"
"I really don’t."
The section chief couldn’t hold back and knocked the new comrade once. "You don’t know the Living Yama? You don’t know the Special Rescue Team?" With that, he stormed off in a huff.
"Huh? She’s the commander’s wife?" The rookie was stunned on the spot. Even the comrade on sentry duty, who was always meticulous and expressionless, couldn’t help but show a smile.
Holding back laughter was just too hard.
Sheng Ning walked along the road of the General Union, heading straight toward the Song and Dance Troupe. As she turned a corner, perfectly familiar with the way, a jeep came toward her and happened to stop right in front of her.
The car door opened. Qin Xue, wearing the Captain’s uniform, looked valiant and dashing, with an air of nobility. A faint, hard-to-read smile hung at the corner of her mouth as she walked toward Sheng Ning with firm steps.
The people in the jeep all curiously craned their necks to secretly size her up. Captain Qin Xue’s overall qualities were high, especially her rich experience in intelligence and rescue responses. So she was very well regarded in the organization. On top of that, she came from a good family and had plenty of people looking out for her, so wherever she went she was the center of attention.
The look Qin Xue gave her was full of provocation and disdain, and she didn’t even bother to hide it. Sheng Ning raised an eyebrow, thinking this woman must have taken the wrong medicine today.
She used to be pretty good at hiding it. How come her hostility was so blatant now?
"I thought you wouldn’t come back." Qin Xue looked down on her, her voice low and flat, only audible to those standing close.
"You shouldn’t have come back. A person who’s already dead coming back again will only bring misfortune to the family and friends around her."
Sheng Ning’s temper flared. "Did you forget to take your meds before you went out today?"
Qin Xue froze for a moment, her willow-leaf brows arching as anger surged into her eyes. She stepped closer and closer to Sheng Ning, the bit of calm she had left long since worn away by torment.
Sheng Ning’s death had given her hope—a hope that she could have Xu Qigang. Just when she was joyfully constructing a bright future in her head, Sheng Ning came back, like a bucket of ice water dumped over her in the middle of summer.
It washed away what little fantasy she had left, what little right she had to pursue happiness.
The look Qin Xue gave Sheng Ning was complicated and hard to read. There was envy, jealousy, killing intent, and resentment. The man she loved so humbly had only this woman in his eyes and in his heart, and he was willing to pay any price for her.
How was she supposed to stay calm?
