Part 2
When the snow melts, the water will seep into the ground and make mud.
When people step on it, it becomes sticky, and some get their feet caught in it and fall over.
North of Grantz, near Molaren.
Monsters and humans repeatedly clashed violently.
When the humans shouted, the monsters responded with their own roar. They would strike the monster with a broken sword if the hilt was intact, throw their broken spears to smash the monster’s head and smash through any obstacle in their way to advance. They never had the word “retreat” in their minds.
There was one man who squinted his eyes as he watched these brave soldiers.
He was Helma, a legitimate son of the Heimdall family, one of the three great northern families entrusted with the northern region by the Second Prince Selene.
He was considered an excellent man by those around him.
However, he was not a genius. If it were only about his talent, he would be an ordinary man.
However, his pride as the eldest son of the Heimdall family, one of the three great northern families, his high level of loyalty to protect and defend his master, and his repeated days of training without overconfidence in himself have led him to become the Chief of Staff to the Second Prince Selene. He was praised for these qualities and was said to be the hardest worker of all.
“It looks like we will finally reach the Spirit Wall.”
The northern army, led by Helma, drove back the monster hordes when they reached Molaren.
With the help of the Black Dragon King’s spirit equipment, they were now able to fight the monsters on equal terms. Although they were outnumbered, their morale was high and they continued to advance at a breakneck pace, never slowing down.
However, that was not the only reason for their smooth progress.
The monster army has no one who looks like a commander. Therefore, even though they were outnumbered, the uncoordinated monsters were no match for the northern army that had spent its days in training.
However, as they approached Molaren, the resistance became fiercer and fiercer.
With the target of the “Spirit Wall” in front of them, Helma sent instructions to his subordinates while suppressing his feelings of excitement.
“The center should fall back as soon as the front lines on both wings are pushed up, then attack at once.”
The advantage was theirs, so there was no need to be hasty. The monsters had no coordination, and they could maneuver the battlefield as they pleased. The priority was to continuously destroy the monsters and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
However, it was not in their nature to ignore the “Spirit Wall” in front of them.
“Brother, the preparations for the detachment are complete.”
“Proditos, can I trust you to lead it?”
“I am at your service. Let me show you how the House of Heimdall will be honored.”
Her sister’s confidence made Helma’s eyes narrow, even though it was a cocky remark that could be considered haughty.
The brother, Helma, was an ordinary person, but her sister Proditos was a genius.
She specialized mainly in combat and was probably one of the five best in the North in terms of combat skills. In addition, she had been trained in various tactics in case she was killed in battle. Her skills in diplomacy and domestic politics were not so great, but when it came to combat-related matters, she absorbed them like how water soaks into cotton.
“Then go kick the crap out of the monsters around the Spirit Wall. Don’t think about killing them, but come back if you feel in danger.”
“I know how to use people as bullets… and I know exactly what I’m talking about. I can’t let Selene-sama’s precious soldiers die in vain.”
“Then go. If you can distract the enemy, it will make things easier for those at the front.”
“Yes, brother, take care.”
She straddled her horse and headed for the waiting squad. Helma, who had averted his eyes from the back of such a reliable sister, looked at the front line.
“Meanwhile… if the Spirit Wall can be retaken, it would be a great way to clear our name.”
Just because they recaptured the Spirit Wall did not mean that they could undo their mistakes in the north.
The rebellion in the north, the collapse of the Spirit Wall, the invasion of the Levering Kingdom, and if Emperor Greyheit were still alive and well, he would surely sentence them to death for their mistakes.
In other words, there was no doubt that the Second Prince Selene was no longer in contention for the throne.
“No, it seems that he originally intended to renounce his right to the throne. I don’t think Selene-sama would mind.”
Even so, as one of the three great northern families, he could not afford to show his dismal appearance.
He could not stand the thought of his lord being underestimated. He would do everything in his power to regain the Spirit Wall and restore the honor of the northern region. Therefore, this must be resolved by the northern forces alone.
“Devour the enemy’s center and completely destroy the monsters nesting in our hometown of Molaren.”
As he was sending instructions to his men, he saw a detachment leaving.
In the lead, her sword raised in the air was his sister Proditos.
Toward the towering “Spirit Wall,” the detachment of soldiers and horses worked in unison, driving their horses hard against the human breakwater. The shouts of many soldiers could be heard as far as Helma’s position.
The collision with the intercepting monsters caused a heavy cloud of dust that obscured his sister’s view.
But he was not afraid. Because he trusts her, he knows she will accomplish what she set out to do.
“Do not forget our mission! Show them our resolve as guardians of the Spirit Wall!”
Thinking of Selene still fighting in the center, he shouted that it was his mission to retake the Spirit Wall.
*****
“What a magnificent plain!”
Skadi, now on horseback, deepened her smile at the lush green horizon as far as the eye could see.
“I’m sure this will satisfy the Council. We’ll be able to secure a vast plain―we can make progress in breeding horses.”
Skadi nodded in satisfaction at her subordinate’s words.
The free peoples who ruled these lands were nomads. They did not settle in one place. They changed where they lived with the seasons. So, it was safe to say that most of their land was untouched.
“So, have you seen any enemies?”
“No, as I thought, they are mostly taken to the Grantz. I asked about a nearby camp, but it was full of old people, women, and children.”
“I see… it would be better to take the territory easily, but… it is too much free time.”
The Free Peoples were born cavalrymen, one of the reasons why the great nation of Steichen could not attack and destroy a small country.
Most of all, they came ready to do a lot of damage because of their geographic location on this side of the border. They expected a fight to the death, but when they opened their eyes, they found that most of them were outnumbered, and there was no resistance.
“As was to be expected, some of the tribes have shown their surrender.”
“Then accept them. There is no point in being rude to old people and children.”
First of all, the free peoples were “brethren” if they looked back to the past. Most of the tribes were made up of Beastmen. They were persecuted only because they were “half-human” and stayed in this land.
The Steichens, like the Grantz, were also pure-blooded supremacists, but Skadi herself could care less about that.
“I’m not saying you should get along, but make sure you treat each other nicely.
They wouldn’t trust anyone if you treat them with hostility from the start. In order to annex that land, it was easier to treat them amicably later on.
It was also necessary to keep the Free Nationalist cavalrymen who had been defeated by the Grantz from resisting when they returned home.
“I understand.”
“On the other hand, isn’t it good to see this land again and again?”
She wanted to acquire this land, no matter what it took. It would be fun to visit when she wanted to rest and ride her horse to the limit on the plains. If it was possible to use the vast plains to breed strong military horses, the Republic of Steichen would become even more powerful.
Therefore, they must not create unnecessary strife and ruin this land. They must treat the free nations with a generous heart, and they must be able to annex the land without confusion.
“If that is the case, we should be able to incorporate the Vanir Three Kingdoms and the Quasir region, right?
If they continue, they will reach the holy city of the Vanir Three Kingdoms.
It was rich in resources. It also faced the sea, where trade flourished. There were also many gold and silver treasures hidden in the city. The city was rich in resources, and trade was flourishing.
“Dear me… we must win the game. If we lose, we will be frustrated.”
The reason why they did not attack the Grantz this time and why they targeted the free peoples.
The reason was that Skadi was defeated by the Black Dragon King.
It was a fair duel, one-on-one, so she wouldn’t complain.
It was her own fault that she lost, and the condition that kept her alive at that time was “obedience.”
Ordinarily, she would have been killed. Since she was allowed to live, she had to repay the favor. But how long would that last? Skadi was a beastmen, a race that hated to lose, and their self-esteem was generally high,
In other words, the Beastmen had no second chances to make promises, and the only way to retreat was to fight again and win.
“Well… if we keep attacking like this, there will be stronger ones.”
The sighs of Skadi, muttering to herself, are laced with a little regret.
The battle between the Great Grantz Empire and the Faceless King could end at any moment.
It would be a race against time.
However, it was doubtful that a resistance force would be waiting for them from this point on. According to information from the Great Grantz Empire, they have heard that the Six Kingdoms were advancing on the Vanir Three Kingdoms. If this was true, they must have driven out most of the defenders.
It was unfortunate that there would be no battle, but even though it seemed very unfortunate, considering the damage to their own forces, etc., they could not be happier.
They should be happy because they will get the territory without any effort.
All that remained now was to pray for a victory for the Grantz.
If they did not win, it will be meaningless even if they get the territory.
It was not hard to imagine that the “monsters” would set their sights on the south now that the Great Wall was gone. In order for the Republic of Steichen to develop further, the victory over Grantz was a prerequisite.
And after many years, the time had come to settle the matter.
In a world that had lost the absolute existence of the “Five Great Heavenly Kings,” this would be pure competition without any support.
For better or worse, Grantz had been kept alive by the intervention of the Five Great Heavenly Kings.
What would happen if they lost it… would they remain powerful, or would they weaken? …But no country can prosper forever.
“It’s too bad it won’t be in our generation.”
But that was the future.
Once the Grantz defeated the Five Great Heavenly Kings, the nation would be at its peak.
The Five Great Heavenly Kings would slowly be weakened, but it would take some time before they could be defeated.
“But more importantly, I wonder if that Queen Lucia will remain calm.”
Although they only exchanged greetings, that affectionate look was decidedly black-hearted.
If she was not careful, she could be taken by surprise. If anything, there would be a three-way war between the Vanir Three Kingdoms.
“There was no condition that the holder of the “Five Destructive Swords of the Holy Principle” cannot be killed.”
It would be interesting to kick Queen Lucia’s army to the curb and then move on to the Six Kingdoms.
Licking her tongue, Skadi was eager to do so.
