Vol 9. Chapter 31: Thunderclap Ravine
Vol 9. Chapter 31: Thunderclap Ravine
Thunder Dragon Territory.
Before they even reached the core of Thunder Dragon land, Leon seemed to sense that the eagle little brother was about to descend.
Unlike with Constantine’s side and the Sea Dragons, he rarely came to visit Odin. And the old Dragon King was always steady and unsmiling, with a very old-fashioned way of doing things, so Leon figured he should be more rule-abiding here.
After landing, he explained the situation to the Thunder Dragon guards, and the guards immediately went back to report it.
Not long after, the guards led Leon and Noa toward the Thunder Dragon Sanctuary.
Noa followed beside Leon, her eyes full of curiosity as she looked around at the scenery.
This was her first time coming to the Thunder Dragons.
That Yuna she’d met at the academy was Odin’s daughter.
Her relationship with Noa was fairly good, and she had often invited Noa to visit her home.
It was just that after Yuna entered adult dragon age, she had to go on missions all over the place, and her contact with Noa gradually became less and less.
Now that Noa had come to her home, that girl would probably be very happy, wouldn’t she.
Curiosity rose in Noa. She turned to Leon.
“Dad, are you going to ask Grandpa Odin to write my recommendation letter?”
Leon nodded.
“Senior Odin is basically one of the only two connections your dad has left.”
Noa stopped in her tracks and asked curiously, “Only two? Then who’s the other one? Why aren’t we going to that person?”
“The other one is Morgan, Goldsand Dragon King.”
“...Then let’s go with Grandpa Odin.”
With Morgan’s savage, lawless vibe, Leon really couldn’t trust him.
The academy would probably scrutinize a recommendation letter written by Morgan extra carefully, too.
So to avoid unnecessary trouble, Leon came straight to Odin.
“Also, Dad bringing you to ask Senior Odin for help actually has another reason,” Leon said.
Noa blinked. “What is it?”
Leon didn’t answer directly. He just gave a mysterious smile.
“You’ll know in a bit.”
Led by the guards, the father and daughter walked into the Thunder Dragon Sanctuary.
No servants, no attendants, no guards, and no luxurious decorations or furnishings.
Even the lighting was somewhat dim.
Looking in, at the end of the corridor—on the steps beneath the Thunder Dragon throne—an elderly man sat there casually. Beside his hand were a teapot, a teacup, and a simple piece of cake.
Leon had heard Yuna mention before that the Thunder Dragon King’s daily life was quite simple and plain.
And it really was true.
Old-generation Dragon Kings like Odin, Constantine, and Morgan usually weren’t that busy.
Meanwhile, Rosvisser was forced into being frantic most of the time—not only because she was a workaholic by nature, but also because of how long she’d been reigning.
Since the queen’s ascension, it had only been seventy or eighty years at most. That sounded long, but in a dragon’s vast lifespan, it wasn’t much at all.
As the saying went, a new official had three fires to set—let alone a newly installed Dragon King.
But for “veterans” like Odin, who had sat on the throne for hundreds of years, there simply weren’t that many critical matters that still required their personal handling.
Most of the work could be done by trusted aides.
So Odin receiving guests this leisurely right now made perfect sense.
“A rare guest, Prince. What wind blew you to my Thunder Dragon Sanctuary?” Odin said with a smile as he rose, hands clasped behind his back, and walked over at an easy pace.
Leon stepped forward as well and lightly shook Odin’s hand.
“To be honest, Senior, I came about Noa’s advancement into the adult division.”
Odin raised an eyebrow. “The adult division?”
At the mention of Noa, Odin shifted his gaze to the Noa at Leon’s side.
After comparing her face and height, Odin said:
“The crown princess looks, at most, fifteen or sixteen. And she’s already preparing to advance into the adult division?”
Leon rested his hand lightly on Noa’s shoulder.
“She enrolled early, and her grades are excellent across the board. Even though she’s only fifteen, entering the adult division to continue advanced study is absolutely not a problem.”
When he said that, Leon’s tone was full of pride in his daughter.
“You just need to see for yourself how a little sapling you watched for fifteen years finally grows into a towering tree.”
After all, Noa was someone he had watched grow with his own eyes. Everything she had experienced, every brilliant achievement she had made—Leon knew it all.
Odin nodded with satisfaction.
“I’ve heard of the crown princess’s encounters and past, and I’ve even experienced some of it personally. Just as you say, Prince—she can continue staying at the academy for further study.”
After being praised repeatedly by elders from her father’s and grandfather’s generation, even Noa’s usually ice-sealed face could not help cracking a little, faintly flushing red.
The young girl stepped out from the side, stood behind Leon for a moment, lifted a hand and lightly tugged at the edge of his clothes, and whispered,
“Okay, Dad, stop... It’s kind of embarrassing.”
Leon turned and patted Noa’s wrist, and he didn’t keep blowing rainbow farts about his daughter.
Odin also smiled.
“When Yuna was your age, she was like you too. She didn’t like people talking about her this way and that.”
Leon took the cue naturally.
“That’s also one of the reasons I wanted to ask you for help, Senior. Noa doesn’t want people saying she used connections or slipped in through the back door after she enters the adult division, so about the recommendation letter... I wanted to trouble you for it.”
Odin narrowed his eyes slightly.
“A recommendation letter... As expected. Back then, Yuna also didn’t want me to write hers. She said if her classmates found out, it might not be good. In the end, she had to trouble Dimos to write it.”
After a pause, Odin asked:
“Oh right—did you not go look for Dimos?”
“The tower master has been working day and night and collapsed sick. I couldn’t exactly trouble him,” Leon said.
“Oh... is that so...”
Odin’s gaze shifted. After thinking briefly, he looked to Noa at the side.
“Crown princess, you’re afraid your classmates might gossip because of your family background, so you came with your father to ask me to write the recommendation letter. I understand how you puberty girls think. Yuna was the same. But when I asked Dimos to write Yuna’s recommendation letter back then, Yuna stayed at Twilight Tower and helped out for a period of time. In other words, if your family personally asks someone else to help you write a recommendation letter, the essence of it is still using connections.”
“So...”
Noa’s mind spun fast.
“Don’t worry, Grandpa Odin. We won’t have you write it for nothing. I can also stay here and help out with something, like Senior Yuna did.”
Leon had parted his lips, intending to argue a bit against Odin’s framing.
In truth, he understood that using connections and pulling strings were not all that different in essence, and he had long been prepared to deal with this favor on the spot.
What he hadn’t expected was that Noa would proactively bring up repayment herself, not letting her old father be the one to speak first.
“Mmm.
Who says my little padded jacket is black-hearted cotton and can’t block the wind? This blocks the wind just fine!”
Seeing Noa offer to help on her own initiative, Odin smiled in understanding.
“Clever little girl. Then, Prince, I really do have something I’d like to trouble you and the crown princess to help with.”
Leon silently let out a breath of relief.
He was only afraid Odin would be polite. Only afraid Odin would say, “You can owe this favor for now.”
Leon didn’t like owing people anything, and with someone like Odin—who said what he needed on the spot—that was the best.
“Senior, tell me. What is it?”
Odin didn’t bother with niceties. He said directly:
“Our northern border has had some abnormalities in Thunderclap Ravine lately.”
“Abnormalities?”
Leon frowned slightly.
“Yes. According to the patrols, some animals living in Thunderclap Ravine have become far more irritable than before, and some plants have also shown anomalies.”
Odin continued slowly:
“On the surface it looks like environmental pollution, but after further investigation, we found it isn’t that simple. It feels like some kind of ‘strange’ force is influencing Thunderclap Ravine. At first, I thought it was the one-third Demon Sword Shard stored here causing trouble, but after checking several times, there was no problem at all. My people haven’t found the cause yet, either. So this time, Prince and crown princess, please go take a look.”
When Odin mentioned “environmental pollution,” Leon couldn’t help thinking of the Sea Dragons.
Tiger had said that a certain sea region on the Sea Dragon side had suffered severe ocean pollution, affecting large numbers of marine creatures and Sea Dragon people.
Even Poseidon had gone out personally, which showed just how serious the impact was.
And now Odin’s territory was showing something similar.
Leon couldn’t help wondering whether the two were connected.
...
Seeing Leon stay silent for a long time, Odin quickly said:
“If the prince feels it’s troublesome, you don’t need to mind it. I’ll still write the recommendation letter...”
“No, no, Senior. I’ll help with this.”
Leon grabbed Noa’s wrist.
“Please arrange manpower to lead the way. Take us over to see it now.”
Odin was slightly surprised. “Oh... Prince truly is an action type. Fine. I’ll immediately have someone guide you.”
“Mhm. Noa and I will do our best to be back before dawn.”
After saying that, Leon led Noa in quick strides toward the door.
Odin watched their backs and added:
“Know your limits, Prince. Even if you find nothing, I will still help the crown princess with this.”
Leon didn’t look back. He lifted an arm and waved loosely.
“Thank you, Senior!”
Watching the father and daughter’s backs fade into the distance, Odin smiled and shook his head, sighing with emotion.
“Young people... keep pushing forward.”
...
Father and daughter moved swiftly through the forest of the Thunder Dragons’ northern border.
Leon didn’t let the Thunder Dragon guards responsible for this route follow them. He only had them stand by at the forest entrance for support.
After all, so many people hadn’t been able to figure it out. One more person following Leon and Noa wouldn’t necessarily change anything.
So the two of them were enough.
“Dad, just now it seemed like you didn’t tell Grandpa Odin the other reason you came to ask him for help.”
Noa landed on the tip of a tree branch and turned to look at Leon, who had also paused to rest.
“Mhm. I want to figure out what’s really going on with Thunderclap Ravine first, and then talk about it.”
Noa’s gaze shifted as she asked:
“Dad, you seem to care about this a lot?”
Leon nodded.
“Do you remember the Sea Dragons have run into something similar lately? I don’t think it has to be a coincidence. What’s more, Senior Odin said one-third of the Demon Sword Shard is still stored here. Even though the preliminary investigation says it’s unrelated, I still feel that the things Atos left behind can’t be that simple.”
Noa thought for a moment.
“Alright. Then let’s hurry.”
“Mhm.”
After a short rest, father and daughter continued toward Thunderclap Ravine.
On the way, Noa kept thinking about that other reason her dad brought her to Odin.
In the end she couldn’t hold it in and asked curiously:
“By the way, Dad, what exactly is that other reason?”
Leon snorted.
“These years, Dad has taught you pretty much everything he knows. But Dad knows that for you, that’s far from enough. Right?”
Noa’s eyes widened slightly. She looked at her father’s profile with a bit of surprise.
After a brief silence, she spoke slowly.
“You want me to learn more magic here with Grandpa Odin?”
Leon nodded.
“Exactly. Senior Odin is also a lightning element specialist, with deep attainment in lightning magic. And lightning magic has different branches. You can learn more new things here from him.”
Noa’s curiosity was hooked.
“What kind of differences?”
Leon thought, then explained leisurely:
“My lightning magic leans more toward burst—like Thousand Birds and Dragon Spear. They’re moves that chase a one-hit kill. But Senior Odin’s lightning magic focuses more on sustained attack and sustained control—things like restraints, lightning movement, lightning prison, and lightning hell execution. You’re still young, Noa. The road ahead is long. Dad doesn’t want you to only pursue one route. Do you understand what Dad means?”
Noa didn’t overthink it. She smiled and nodded.
“Of course. Take everyone’s strengths.”
Leon smiled.
“So... are you willing to study with Senior Odin for a period of time?”
“Of course I’m willing. If I can become stronger, why wouldn’t I?”
Noa paused, then teased:
“Maybe after Grandpa Odin teaches me, I’ll be able to beat you.”
“If you want to beat your dad, you’re still twenty thousand years too early.”
“I really do have a twenty-thousand-year-old auntie in my body. And you, my dear father—you’d better really be able to live until twenty thousand years from now. Don’t tell abstract jokes.”
