Chapter 845: Scam Artists are Not Cute! (13)
Yin Baobao’s attempt to explain only fueled Yin Shijie’s fury further.
“Look at the fine daughter you’ve raised!” Yin Shijie bellowed at the woman standing in the doorway. “Refusing to admit her mistakes—how can she ever take over this household?”
With that, Yin Shijie stormed out of the room.
Yin Baobao stood frozen, clutching her clothes tightly. Yin Shijie clearly wanted to hand the company over to the children of his mistress. He wouldn’t even listen to her side of the story, immediately concluding she was the one who leaked the information.
“Sweetie[1],” Yin-mu called gently after Yin Shijie had left, entering the room with a sorrowful expression. She tenderly touched Yin Baobao’s face. “Does it hurt?”
Yin-mu had a meek nature, especially in front of Yin Shijie, where she was nothing short of subservient. Yin Baobao had long despised this behavior.
After being berated by Yin Shijie, Yin Baobao’s own anger surged, shattering her usual facade of an obedient daughter.
“It’s all because of you,” Yin Baobao snapped, pushing her mother away with a look of disgust. “You can’t even keep your own husband.”
“Sweetie?” Yin-mu, unaware of Yin Shijie’s infidelity—or perhaps unwilling to acknowledge it—looked at her daughter with confusion and hurt.
“Get out!” Yin Baobao shouted at her mother, her voice laced with frustration.
“Sweetie, don’t blame your father…” her mother began.
“Get out!” she screamed again.
Yin-mu opened her mouth, stammering silently, unable to form a single word.
Seeing her mother like this only enraged Yin Baobao more. She roughly shoved her mother out of the room and slammed the door with a loud bang.
Inside the room, Yin Baobao smashed several items in a fit of rage. Who had set her up?
Those two brats from outside?
It had to be them!
The Yin family belonged to her.
Why should it go to those two little bastards?
Before being transported into this book, Yin Baobao had despised mistresses deeply; one had driven her mother to death by inserting herself into their home. This seething hatred for homewreckers was now etched into her soul.
Rummaging through the chaos she had created, Yin Baobao found her phone. The screen’s glow highlighted her twisted features, her eyes brimming with malevolence that seemed ready to spill over.
“Hello, it’s me. Bring those two brats to me. Same arrangements as always… How’s the situation with Bu Meng? You said it would be done quickly, and it’s been ages… I don’t want to hear excuses; I want results. You have a few more days.”
She hung up the phone, her gaze venomous as it bore into the empty space.
‘Anyone who dares obstruct my path will pay dearly.’
Shi Sheng scrolled through the latest news, pausing when she saw reports about the Yin family. She backed out to the homepage and sent a text to Xia Ling.
— Your doing?
It took Xia Ling a while to reply, clearly busy with something.
— What?
— The Yin family.
— Yeah.
Shi Sheng wanted to tell him it wasn’t necessary to go to such lengths, but thought better of it. No need to undermine her partner’s efforts too much.
She continued browsing the news, clicking into the entertainment section, where Xia Ling’s name was highlighted in bold.
‘What has he done now?’
“《Tianlai》 Live Broadcast: Xia Ling Loses Temper, Assaults Host.”
Shi Sheng: “…”
Live…
She quickly found the video of Xia Ling hitting the host. Since it was a live broadcast, nothing was edited out.
Initially, Xia Ling cooperated. He answered every question the host asked, though his responses were a bit sharp. The show progressed smoothly until the host brought up the incident with the SHINE[2] group from two years ago. That’s when Xia Ling snapped.
He sat on the bench, head lowered, while Yu Sheng was arguing with several staff members.
Yu Sheng’s face was a mask of fury. “I warned you all not to mention SHINE, and you agreed. Why bring it up?”
“Yu-ge, calm down. The host is new and didn’t know the rules. Let’s not make a big deal out of it,” a staff member tried to placate him. Despite Xia Ling’s numerous haters, Yu Sheng managed many other high-profile artists.
Hearing this only fueled Yu Sheng’s anger. “Not make a big deal out of it? This was your responsibility from the start. You want to shift the blame?”
“Yes, yes, it’s our fault.”
The host was indeed new. They had been explicitly told not to mention SHINE, but in pursuit of ratings, they ignored the directive.
Anything related to SHINE was a taboo for Xia Ling. Anyone who dared to bring it up risked a beating.
When Shi Sheng arrived, Yu Sheng was still berating the staff.
Yu Sheng noticed Shi Sheng out of the corner of his eye, astonished. He left the staff mid-sentence. “Xiao’guai, what are you doing here?”
Shi Sheng pointed at Xia Ling. “I’m here for him.”
Yu Sheng glanced at the seated Xia Ling, then back at Shi Sheng, confusion etched on his face. “You two…?”
Why did Xiao’guai suddenly come to find Xia Ling?
“He’s my boyfriend,” Shi Sheng said without any intention of hiding it.
Yu Sheng was struck as if by a thunderbolt. It took him a moment to regain his voice. He pulled Shi Sheng into a corner. “You and Xia Ling? Since when?”
“For a while now.”
Yu Sheng felt a deep sense of failure. He hadn’t noticed that Xiao’guai was in a relationship, and with Xia Ling no less.
Countless thoughts swirled in his mind, but he couldn’t find the words to express them.
He looked at Shi Sheng intently. “Take him home and wait for me there.”
Xia Ling sat with his head bowed, clutching a cup of water that had long gone cold. When Shi Sheng reached to take it from him, he gripped it tighter, crushing the paper cup and spilling water everywhere.
When Xia Ling finally looked up, his eyes were like ice, freezing cold.
But upon recognizing Shi Sheng, the frost melted away like snow in spring, vanishing in an instant.
“You came. Were you scared?”
Shi Sheng glanced at him, taking the misshapen cup from his hand. “Let’s go home.”
A faint smile tugged at Xia Ling’s lips. “Alright.”
As they left, people pointed and whispered about Xia Ling along the way.
“That’s him. Even in his current state, he dares to openly assault a host.”
“How can anyone be so despicable? I’ve heard he treats his fans horribly. No wonder he’s got so many haters online now.”
“During today’s recording, he even showed up late like a diva, making all of us wait for him as if he were some big star.”
“Aside from his looks, he has nothing to offer. My dear Chen would have been famous nationwide by now if it weren’t for him dragging him down.”
“I wonder whose connections got him on our show. That face of his must have quite a few admirers.”
Shi Sheng paused and looked at the girl who mentioned connections.
The girl, thinking Shi Sheng was Xia Ling’s assistant, frowned and snapped, “What are you staring at?”
With a deadpan expression, Shi Sheng replied, “You’re really good-looking. Be careful when you go out; you might catch someone’s eye, and that could be trouble.”
At first, the girl was pleased by the compliment, but her expression soured at the implication. “What nonsense are you spouting!”
Shi Sheng maintained a serious demeanor. “Your forehead is dark. There’s a bloodshed in your near future.”
Xia Ling, exasperated, urged, “Let’s go.”
Shi Sheng shrugged innocently, following Xia Ling down the stairs, leaving the bewildered girl behind.
[1] – The raws say 宝宝, but I consider baby to be a term for couples, and Baobao is her surname, so I chose sweetie instead.
[2] – I capitalized this so it’d sound more like a k-pop group hehe
