Chapter 423 - Recognition
Chapter 423 - Recognition
The two children wore small dark capes covering their faces, putting on deep, theatrical voices, imitating the villains in a very realistic, convincing, and exaggerated way, to the point that the other children around them couldn’t stop laughing at their dramatic performances.
"We are the terrible mercenaries of the forest!" the little boy shouted, raising a wooden dagger and striking a villain pose that reminded Lohan a lot of the pose one of the kidnapper members he’d killed had used, something that, coming from a cute little boy like that, made the elf girls burst out laughing. "No one will save you from us!"
"Hand over all your candy or we’ll lock you in our thorny vine fortress!" The boy’s little sister added, pulling the cape up over her chin and running after a friend who was pretending to panic, thoroughly enjoying the moment.
Lohan watched that and was very surprised they could handle it with such lightness. Normally, people who went through such traumatic situations ended up developing post traumatic disorders that severely disrupted that person’s life.
But apparently, what he thought could be extremely traumatic didn’t seem to matter that much to those children.
’Good... it’s better for these kids to treat that event as just another day than to fall into some kind of deep depression, unable to even leave the house out of fear of being kidnapped or something like that.’ Lohan thought, realizing this was the best outcome.
’Especially considering these kids definitely had a very important noble identity and a mischievous personality that clearly got them into trouble frequently, it’s even possible that situation wasn’t the first time they’d gotten into something like that... haha.’
With no need to worry about the children’s mental health after an event like that, Lohan relaxed and simply enjoyed the time, watching those children play.
Even though they were probably older than him, the innocence they still held onto was refreshing.
In the middle of one of those dramatic chases across the plaza, the elf girl stopped abruptly near the edge of the flower bed, her bright blue eyes fixing directly on the little blue gelatin ball sitting there watching the game from a distance.
The elf boy ran up right after her and stopped beside his sister, both staring at the Slime with immense curiosity that quickly replaced the focus of their theatrical game.
They noticed that little Slime had two extremely cute white eyes blinking in a friendly way, and that the consistency of his jelly was a sky blue tone far more beautiful, translucent, and glowing than the ugly, ordinary slimes they used to see lying in the grass of the deep forest.
Realizing how different that Slime was, a being of that species that had left such a strong mark on their minds surfaced. A spark of immediate recognition lit up in the two children’s eyes as they perfectly recalled the creature that had emerged from the shadows of the swamp to trap the human assassin with magical webs and digest the terrible group of kidnappers in front of them, saving their lives in time to make it back to Thalendor safe and sound.
Remembering that "adventure" they’d lived through in such a striking way, the two siblings grew more and more excited seeing who appeared to be the star of that incredible scene!
Excited by the possibility of standing before their great savior, the two elves began approaching Lohan with hesitant steps, unsure whether that cute, docile looking Slime really was the same relentless warrior they’d met that day of horror in the forest of Mythlorien.
They walked slowly until stopping just inches from Lohan, their pointed ears trembling subtly with anxiety as they whispered to each other in secretive tones.
"Do you think it’s him, Vaelthas?" the little girl asked quietly, her eyes shining with admiration. "He’s got the same bright blue as that day, but he looks a lot cuter and cleaner here at the plaza."
"I’m almost sure it’s him," the little boy replied, adjusting his small cape with his fingers. "Even hiding it really well, he clearly has a completely different power aura from every Slime we’ve come across since that day. I doubt there’s another Slime like Halon out there."
Working up his courage and taking a step forward, the little boy Vaelthas finally looked straight at Lohan and asked the question they’d both wanted to ask since the start of their walk over.
"Excuse me, Mr. Slime... are you by any chance that great, powerful savior who rescued us from the humans at the slippery swamp?"
Lohan felt his core vibrate with a comforting warmth hearing the two children’s innocent question.
Since he had no direct verbal communication ability at that moment, and Lisa wasn’t there to act as his telepathic link, he couldn’t reply out loud to confirm their guess.
But he didn’t want to leave them without an answer. Lohan stretched his gelatin at the bottom and formed a cute, curved smile right below his two white eyes, making his membrane pulse with small, glowing sparks of friendly satisfaction.
At the same time, focusing his biomass with the precision his structural stability allowed, he extended a small, cute bluish little hand from the side of his body, waving in an extremely friendly way to greet the two little children.
Seeing that little jelly hand wave at them so cutely and expressively, the two elf children let out squeals of pure excitement and joy, confirming their hero’s identity.
"It’s him! It’s really him, Vaelthas!" the little girl exclaimed with her arms raised, ready to take another step and try to touch the Slime’s soft skin.
"Thank you so much for saving us, Mr. Halon!" the little girl thanked him with a huge smile on her face, extending her little hands to also pet his gelatinous body.
However, before the children’s fingers could make any physical contact with Lohan’s gelatin, the atmosphere of the public plaza was cut through by a sudden, extremely fast gust of wind.
