Chapter 280: Shadow Dragon’s wrath

Chapter 280: Shadow Dragon’s wrath

The dragon’s blue fire descended upon them like the wrath of a god, a storm of light and destruction that burned even through the black mist. The air rippled with unbearable heat, and the ground around them split and heaved as the infernal blaze struck the divine dome.

The impact was thunderous. The noise alone was enough to rupture eardrums...an explosion that made the entire abyss shudder. For an instant, everything vanished in the brilliance of the flame. The barrier shook, groaning under the pressure, its once-bright glow flickering like a dying star.

Inside the dome, everyone threw themselves to the ground as the fire licked against the shield. It was like being inside a furnace. The Ice Belle, hidden deep in Lucas’s cloak, whimpered faintly, her tiny form trembling as waves of her divine energy were pulled through her by the Empress’s will.

The Empress’s knees sank into the cracked ground. Her hands pressed to the earth, veins of light crawling up her arms as she drew out every last drop of her Qi. "Hold... hold, you wretched thing!" she gasped, her voice hoarse with strain. Sweat poured down her temples and mixed with the blood already trailing from the corner of her lips.

The blue flames clawed at the dome as though alive, biting, roaring, desperate to consume what lay within. The Empress’s divine light flared again, brighter this time, merging with the Ice Belle’s aura until it shone like dawn breaking through darkness. The fire roared in protest but began to ebb, forced back by the expanding glow.

When the dragon pulled away at last, ascending with a furious shriek that rattled their bones, the group saw the toll it had taken on her. The Empress fell forward onto her hands, gasping for breath. Her once-radiant aura had dimmed to a faint flicker. Her garments, already tattered, were singed at the edges, and her hair clung to her neck and shoulders, damp with sweat and soot, her expression beneath the veil was terrible...she feared the worst.

"Your Majesty!" Seraphine rushed to her side, catching her before she collapsed fully. "You’re bleeding!"

"I’m... fine," the Empress managed, though her voice betrayed the lie. She wiped the blood from her lips and steadied herself, her gaze fixed above. "It’s not over yet."

Theron lifted his head weakly. "Not over? You call surviving that not over?"

The Empress’s expression darkened. "It’s turning back."

They all looked up. The dragon was circling again, high above, its monstrous wings slicing through the corrupted sky. The blue fire still glowed within its throat, though dimmer now, the beast enraged that its prey had survived.

Captain Varran cursed under his breath. "We can’t take another blast like that. The dome won’t hold."

The crippled grandmaster, pale and trembling, shook his head. "That creature’s power is not of this world. Even a celestial can’t endure two full breaths of its flame."

The Empress wiped the blood from her mouth again, but her hands were shaking now. "We have no choice. If it strikes again, I’ll pour everything I have into the Ice Belle’s divine light. That creature’s purity is the only thing that can withstand this corruption."

Above them, the shadow dragon released another guttural roar that echoed through the abyss like thunder, then folded its wings and dived once more...faster, more furious, more determined to erase them completely. The black mist churned violently beneath its descent, drawn upward like a living tide.

Seraphine’s hand tightened on the Empress’s arm. "It’s coming!" she screamed.

The Empress staggered upright, summoning the last of her divine Qi. Her voice was a whisper, yet it carried across the group, steady and clear despite her exhaustion. "Stay close to Xavier. Protect the Ice Belle. No matter what happens... don’t break formation."

The blue light in the dragon’s throat ignited again, brighter than before. The Empress closed her eyes and raised her arms toward the heavens, her aura flickering violently as the first sparks of blue flame reached them.

The weight of the Shadow Dragon’s presence crushed the air from their lungs, and the burning blue light gathering within its throat painted the abyss in shades of ruin. When the beast finally unleashed its fire, it came like the judgment of a god, a torrent of searing blue flame that swept downward with the fury of an endless storm.

Despite her trembling limbs, the empress outstretched her arms once again, forcing every fragment of her will into the divine barrier that still faintly shimmered around them. Her eyes burned with light as she called forth the Ice Belle’s essence, drawing upon the pure celestial energy that lingered within the creature’s small, fragile body. Yet even that divine glow struggled to hold against the inferno. The fire struck the barrier with an impact that shook the world itself, a violent roar drowning every other sound as heat and light devoured the darkness around them.

The Empress cried out, blood spilling anew from her lips, but she did not falter. Seeing her strain against the overwhelming power of the beast, the others followed suit, gathering their own Qi and pouring it into the divine light, desperate to strengthen the barrier that was now the only thing between them and death. Seraphine’s hands shook violently as she channeled her energy through the Empress’s aura. Selene fell to her knees beside Lucas’s unconscious body, forcing every drop of her cultivation into the flow, her tears mixing with the sweat running down her cheeks.

For a moment, the divine light flared brighter, its golden radiance fighting back against the flood of blue flame. The air crackled as the two opposing powers clashed in a struggle that seemed to tear the sky itself apart. The flames howled and swirled, gnawing at the barrier with relentless hunger, their heat pressing inward until every breath within the dome felt like swallowing molten steel.

Despite their combined effort, it was not enough. The barrier began to thin, its glow dimming as cracks of light spidered across its surface. The Empress’s body shook violently, her hair whipping around her veil, her celestial aura flickering like a candle on the verge of going out. She felt her strength slipping away with every heartbeat, every surge of flame eroding the last remnants of her resistance. The Ice Belle’s divine light, once radiant and steady, began to wane, its gentle hum breaking into faint, trembling pulses.

The dragon’s fire pressed closer, licking at the barrier’s edges, slipping through the fractures that had begun to spread across the light’s surface. The world around them dissolved into a haze of unbearable heat and blinding brightness. One by one, the cultivators felt their resolve falter, their Qi draining faster than their hearts could keep up. Their vision blurred, and the realization settled upon them with dreadful clarity...they were not going to survive this.

As the flames continued to devour the last threads of the barrier, the Empress’s gaze drifted to the faces around her. She saw Seraphine’s eyes wide with fear yet filled with love, Selene, Lira, Nyx and Mirielle’s trembling forms clutching together, the crippled grandmaster and the guards and loyalists who had sworn to fight the usurpers now standing as silent witnesses to their end. There was a quiet understanding in that moment, a wordless farewell shared among them all.

The barrier flickered again, weaker than before, the sound of cracking light echoing through the burning air. The Empress exhaled a shuddering breath, her eyes glistening with tears beneath her veil...she no longer had the strength to hold back.

For the first time, she allowed herself to accept the truth that had been looming since the battle began. There was nothing more she could do. The divine light would not last another heartbeat, and no miracle would descend from the heavens to save them.

She closed her eyes slowly, her blood-stained lips curving into the faintest shadow of a sorrowful smile. The flames outside grew brighter still, reflecting off her face like shards of a dying sun. Her final breath escaped in a soft sigh, heavy with the weight of defeat and resignation.

They were fated to die here, deep within the dragon’s domain, swallowed by the very fire that no mortal power could withstand. And as the divine barrier began to collapse, its last light fading into the consuming blue blaze, the world around them was silenced beneath the roar of the beast and the inevitable darkness that followed.
