Chapter 367: Feeling of Death
Chapter 367: Feeling of Death
Lucas closed his eyes for a brief moment, forcing himself to breathe and rein in the urge to act, and when he opened them again his gaze was steady, though filled with worry. "Very well," he said softly. "But know this, if your life is truly in danger, I will not hesitate, pride or no pride."
The ice belle nodded once, a small but resolute gesture, before turning fully back to the shadow dragon, frost surging around her as she gathered what remained of her strength. "Come then," she declared, her voice ringing with defiance. "I am still standing, and I will not fall here."
The dragon roared in response, the sound echoing endlessly through the abyss as it launched itself forward once more, and Lucas and Henrietta could do nothing but watch, hearts heavy yet filled with a strange respect.
Trying to exhaust the shadow dragon through attrition would have been nothing more than a slow march toward death, and the ice belle understood this truth more clearly than anyone watching from the sidelines. This abyss was the dragon’s home, a place saturated with its presence and nourished endlessly by corrupted currents that would replenish it no matter how vicious the exchange became. Every breath it took was supported by the domain itself, every wound it suffered was softened by the abyss welcoming it as its rightful ruler. To fight such a creature on those terms was to accept defeat from the very beginning.
The ice belle knew this, and as the realization settled fully in her heart, something within her shifted. She was not merely a wandering spirit or a dependent familiar bound to Lucas by fate and contract. She was a supreme creature, born of pure frost and radiant light, a being so refined that the filth and corruption of the abyss could never truly stain her essence. No matter how deep the darkness ran here, it was still foreign to her nature, and darkness, no matter how vast, could never completely swallow light that refused to dim.
Her battered form drifted backward through the air, retreating with calm rather than panic, and for the first time since the battle began she did not hurl an attack or prepare a counter. Instead, she drew in a slow and measured breath, her chest rising gently as she closed her eyes, shutting out the roar of the dragon and the trembling of the abyss around her. Frost gathered faintly around her skin, not violently or explosively, but with a quiet elegance that felt almost sacred, as though the world itself had paused to watch what she would do next.
From the outside, it looked as though she had given up.
The shadow dragon certainly believed so, and its fury twisted instantly into savage delight. With a thunderous roar that tore through the abyss like a collapsing mountain, it hurled its massive body forward, wings beating with terrifying force as it closed the distance in a heartbeat. Its jaws opened impossibly wide, shadow and flame churning together deep within its throat as it prepared to unleash a torrent of inferno fire powerful enough to erase her completely. The sight was both magnificent and horrifying, a vision of raw destruction that embodied everything vile and dominant about the abyss itself.
Lucas felt his heart seize at the sight.
He did not wait for reason or strategy to catch up with his instincts. The moment the dragon surged forward, Lucas launched himself after it, his body moving before his mind could even finish forming the thought. Spatial qi flared violently around him as he crossed the distance at impossible speed, his eyes locked on the small, unmoving figure of the ice belle ahead. Fear burned through him alongside resolve, because no matter how much he trusted her strength, the image before him was one he could not simply stand back and accept.
"Do not you dare," he muttered under his breath as he pushed himself harder, his aura roaring to life as the abyss trembled around him.
Behind him, Henrietta watched with her breath caught in her throat, sensing that something momentous was about to unfold, something that would decide far more than the outcome of a single battle.
And just as the shadow dragon’s inferno gathered to burst forth, and Lucas closed in with everything he had, the moment stretched thin as fate itself seemed to hold its breath.
Lucas appeared between the ice belle and the shadow dragon in a violent shimmer of distorted space, his body reacting purely on instinct as terror and resolve fused into a single purpose, and the very instant his feet touched the abyss floor he began weaving defense qi with frantic precision, one layer after another forming in rapid succession before him, translucent barriers stacking and reinforcing themselves as his life and the ice belle’s depended on every breath he took, because it truly did. His hands moved almost blindly, guided by muscle memory and desperation rather than calm thought, as he poured everything he had into fortifying the space in front of him, knowing full well that even the slightest hesitation would spell the end for all of them.
Behind him, Henrietta understood his intent immediately, and without waiting for words or confirmation she surged forward with terrifying speed, her battered body screaming in protest as she forced out what little strength she had left, her eyes locked on the ice belle as she reached out to seize her and pull her away from the path of annihilation. The moment her fingers closed around the small spirit, she felt the residual chill and stubborn vitality that still clung to her, and that alone gave her just enough reassurance to push harder and retreat faster.
Lucas barely noticed Henrietta’s movement because the world before him had slowed to a crawl.
He watched in agonizing clarity as the shadow dragon’s chest expanded and contracted, as the guttural roar deep within its throat twisted into something far more sinister, and as the inferno finally tore its way free, a torrent of blue and black flame screaming forward with the weight of certain death behind it. The air itself seemed to peel apart under the pressure, and the abyss trembled as it were bowing to its ruler’s wrath.
Every hair on Lucas’s body stood on end, his skin prickling violently as an instinct far older than cultivation screamed at him to flee, and in that stretched and terrible moment he knew with absolute certainty that this was death rushing toward him. The sensation was so familiar that it stole the breath from his lungs, dragging him back to another helpless instant, another moment where he had felt the same inevitability, the same cold finality, when metal screamed and the world shattered and he died alongside his sister in that train accident.
His jaw clenched hard enough to ache, his eyes burning as he poured even more qi into the defenses before him, refusing to move, refusing to retreat, because this time he was standing in front of death rather than being crushed beneath it, and he would not allow it to pass him so easily, he would give his all.
