Chapter 468: New plans

The girls led Lucas and the empress to where the king was.

He was seated on a raised platform just outside a tent, his posture rigid despite the weariness in his eyes, the tension of the battlefield still etched into every line of his face. Captain Varran and Commander Alexander stood at his sides, vigilant, their expressions a mixture of relief and concern as they watched the empress and Lucas approach. The moment they arrived, the empress gave a respectful nod to the king, her aura calm but imposing, the weight of her presence instantly filling the space around them. Lucas stayed slightly behind her, giving her the lead, yet his eyes flickered over the king with quiet determination, the unspoken understanding between them deep and unbroken.

The king’s gaze softened when he saw Lucas, though his mind was still occupied with the aftermath of the battle and the state of Valerion. "You’re in one piece," he said, his voice carrying both relief and the gravity of the recent chaos, "I feared we might have lost you entirely." The empress inclined her head slightly, her voice calm and steady, "The war is far from over, Your Majesty, but our people are alive, and the threat has been temporarily subdued. We need to act swiftly to secure Valerion, Lechia and Rus and prevent further losses."

Lucas excused himself quietly, turning to motion for Tom, who had been standing nearby, ever watchful. "Get the squad," he instructed. Tom’s face lit up with determination, and he immediately went to gather Bartho and the others, their familiar faces soon appearing, weary but resolute. They joined Lucas without hesitation, forming a protective formation around him, their presence a reassurance not just to him but to the king and the empress, a clear signal that the young sage was no longer alone. The empress observed this quietly, her sharp eyes noting the synergy and loyalty of the squad, the way they moved as one with Lucas, and she allowed herself a small, approving smile. The stage was set for the next phase of their campaign, the calm before the storm, yet within that calm, there was a sense of unity, strength, and readiness that radiated from those gathered, signaling that no matter the obstacles ahead, they would face them together.

Back to the King

He leaned forward, his hands resting firmly on the table before him, eyes sharp and calculating as he addressed Commander Alexander and Captain Varran. "The situation is precarious," he began, voice low but firm, "Valerion has been taken, our people are hostages, and the usurpers’ forces are regrouping faster than anticipated. I propose we seek an alliance with Blackmare Kingdom. From what I hear, their lands are still lightly affected by the ongoing sieges, which means they could provide much-needed reinforcements."

Commander Alexander’s brow furrowed, his tone carrying both caution and skepticism. "Your Majesty, we must be careful," he said. "Blackmare Kingdom is not our friend. They are rivals. They remember the accusations we leveled against them when Prince Darius was poisoned. Even though it wasn’t proven, the tension between us hasn’t fully eased. They might see our request for alliance as an opportunity to manipulate us, or worse, to exact revenge for the slight."

Captain Varran, ever pragmatic, chimed in, "If we approach them, they will demand concessions, guarantees, and perhaps even control over strategic regions. Their support will come at a cost, and we must be prepared for the political fallout within Valerion."

The empress, her gaze steady and unwavering, interjected with a calm authority that cut through the tension. "We do not have the luxury of ignoring Blackmare Kingdom," she said, her voice resonant, carrying the weight of centuries of wisdom and power. "If we refuse to include them, they will either stand aside and watch the usurpers overwhelm us, or they will exploit the chaos to strengthen themselves at our expense. Joining us may not be a matter of desire for them but a matter of survival. They will be forced to act if we present our case correctly, or they will face the usurpers alone and likely perish."

The king leaned back slightly, considering her words, the lines of worry on his face softening as he nodded slowly. "She is right," he admitted, "our position is far too weak to fight the usurpers alone. We need every ally we can secure. Commander Alexander, you will draft the terms. Varran, you will prepare the envoys and ensure our message is precise, no room for misinterpretation. The Blackmare Kingdom must understand that this is not merely a request; it is a necessity."

Commander Alexander hesitated for only a moment before nodding firmly. "Understood, Your Majesty. I will ensure the terms are favorable, yet fair. We cannot appear desperate, or they will exploit it."

The empress gave a subtle nod, her eyes softening slightly as she regarded the king. "The people of Valerion, the balance of the region, and even the fate of Lechia depend on this," she said quietly but with undeniable conviction. "We do not have the luxury of pride or past grievances. Blackmare must be made to understand that refusing to act is choosing annihilation."

Captain Varran glanced between them, a mixture of relief and unease in his expression. "Then it is settled. We proceed with caution, but with full intent to secure their support. Every day we delay risks the lives of those in Valerion."

The king’s eyes hardened, the weight of leadership pressing down upon him as he leaned forward once more. "Very well. Then we will extend the hand of alliance, not as a favor, but as a calculated necessity. Blackmare Kingdom will join, willingly or not, because the alternative is a world in flames."

The empress placed a hand on the king’s arm, a quiet gesture of solidarity. "And with that, Your Majesty, the tides begin to turn. Let us ensure that when the time comes, Valerion and its allies stand united, stronger than the usurpers ever imagined."

The atmosphere fell into a tense silence as each person considered the enormity of what lay ahead, the precarious political maneuvering required, and the lives that rested on their decisions. In that moment, it was clear: the next steps would not merely be battles of force, but battles of strategy, influence, and resolve.
