Chapter 304: Assistant Bestie
Chapter 304: Assistant Bestie
As Stefan drove the car to the hospital, Genevieve sat in front with him, while Jamal and Abigail sat in the back.
Abigail’s right hand was enclosed in Jamal’s hand and she rested her head on his shoulder as she thought about the meeting with Ryan.
"Do you think he’s going to be remorseful?" Abigail asked Jamal quietly.
"I don’t know. Would it make a difference, though?" Jamal asked, and Abigail sighed deeply.
She shook her head. "I don’t know. I guess I just need to see him and hear what he has to say. But I’m a little anxious," she confessed.
"Why?"
"I have this pit in my stomach. I don’t know why, I just have a bad feeling."
"He’s not going to hurt you. I’ll be with you," Jamal promised, lifting her hand to his lips.
He then reached for his phone in his pocket when it started vibrating.
"It’s Emily," he told Abigail before receiving the call. "How are you, Em? Are you alright?"
"I’m fine. Cal said you’re on your way. I’m waiting for you to get here before I leave," she said, and Jamal raised a brow.
"Is he there with you?"
"Nah. I’m in my Dad’s office. He’s with Ryan," she said, and Jamal raised a brow.
"He went in already? I thought he was going to wait to go in with Dawn. Anyway, we are almost there. I can see the building from here," Jamal said, understanding that Callan probably needed to get some things out of the way before they arrived.
"In that case I’ll wait at the entrance for you," Emily said, then looked at Callan with a frown when he walked into the office.
"See you soon," she said before hanging up the call.
"You are done talking to him already?" Callan’s father asked, surprised that he was back so soon.
Callan shrugged. "I told him my piece. I will hear what he has to say after he does what I want," Callan said, staring at Emily who was looking at everyone and everything else but at him.
"And what is it you want?" Emily’s father asked curiously.
"He has to apologize to Dawn and Genevieve, then take responsibility for all he has done. I don’t want him to wait until he’s exposed. That’s the only way I can stand looking at him. Right now I can’t," Callan said, still looking at Emily, who was avoiding his gaze.
"Well, that’s fair," his mother said, patting his arm. "Let’s hope he does the right thing."
"We should probably go see him, right?" Emily’s stepmom asked her sister.
"Why? I’m not sure I want to. After all, he made it clear he didn’t want anything to do with us nineteen years ago," Delilah responded.
"C’mon, D. He’s still our cousin," Jessica said, and Delilah rolled her eyes.
"Maybe we can do that after he does as Callan requested. For now, I have no business with him. The only reason I’m here is to offer emotional support to my son if he needs it, and thankfully he seemed to have handled it well," Delilah said, smiling at Callan.
Emily glanced at Callan, and when she saw he was still staring at her, she looked away and rose, "Jamal is nearby. I’ll wait to see him outside. Then I’ll take a cab home."
Callan dipped his hand in his pocket, "You don’t have to take a cab. I told you I’ll drop you off."
Before Emily could protest, her father nodded, "Yeah. Callan do that."
"Dad, this isn’t Husla. This is Ludus and I’m more than capable of taking care of myself," she said with disapproval.
"Of course, princess. We all know you can do that. Dropping you off at home doesn’t mean you can’t take care of yourself. Callan, take her home. I don’t want her getting knocked out in some stranger’s cab. She looks like she’s definitely going to sleep off in the car," her father said, and Emily shook her head but didn’t argue as she walked out of the office.
Callan followed her. "How much did you tell him about me?" He asked as they walked down the hallway.
"Nothing much. I told him your life was hard enough already and that if he was going to make it more difficult than it already was then he should leave you alone," she answered honestly.
"That’s nice of you. Do you want to hear the details of our conversation?" He asked, and she glanced at him.
"Wasn’t that what you already told us in the office?" She muttered.
"You were listening? You didn’t seem like it," Callan said, and when Emily didn’t respond, he continued. "How long will you be in Ludus? We can go back together. And maybe we can hangout tomorrow or next after you’ve gotten enough rest. What do you think?"
Emily’s heart skipped a beat, and this time she paused and turned to him. "What are you doing?"
"What do you mean?" Callan asked innocently.
She frowned. "What’s wrong with you? Did you hit your head somewhere? You know what? Don’t answer that. I don’t have time for any of this," she said before walking away, not wanting to make a fool of herself.
As Callan followed her, he smiled, pleased with her response. He preferred the heat of her annoyance over the calm and friendly attitude she’d put up earlier.
He’d rather she stay mad at him until he cleared the air between them, than become indifferent toward him.
Before Emily could get to the front door, she saw Jamal and the others walking into the lobby. "Jam!" She called out loudly with a wide smile.
Jamal’s face lit up when he saw her, and immediately they gravitated towards each other and Abigail and the others watched as they embraced.
"God! I’ve missed you so much," she said, inhaling his scent before stepping back.
Jamal chuckled as he ruffled her hair, "You seem to have grown a bit in my absence."
"Get out of here!" She said, laughing as she slapped his arm.
She looked past him and when she saw Abigail staring at them, she looked at Jamal again. "She isn’t the very jealous type, right?"
Jamal grinned. "Why don’t you find out?" He said as he joined Callan.
Emily giggled as she walked up to meet Abigail, Stefan, and Genevieve. "Stef, it’s good to see you," she said, embracing Stefan.
"Same here, Em," Stefan said, smiling at her before leaving the ladies to go join Jamal and Callan in their conversation.
"Hello, Dawn. I’m Emily. Jamal’s friend. I hope you don’t mind the hug just now," she said, and Abigail smiled at her.
"Of course I don’t. I know how close you all are," she assured Emily. "It’s good to finally meet you."
"Same here. You’re so beautiful in person, Dawn," Emily said, and Abigail grinned.
"Thanks. And you look beautiful yourself."
"Thanks. Can I embrace you? Or should I just shake you? Which would you be more comfortable with? I’d like to hug you though. Jamal is my male bestie, and the girlfriend of my male bestie is definitely my assistant bestie, and I can’t just shake you."
Abigail giggled. "A hug is fine," she said, and Emily grinned and embraced her.
" I’m so happy for you and Jamal. You should know you bagged one of the very few good loyal single men remaining on the surface of the earth."
"Yeah. Thanks," Abigail agreed with a wide smile.
After they broke the hug, Emily looked at Genevieve. "Hello! I didn’t know you were in Ludus."
"Hi. We got in this morning," she said politely.
She wasn’t sure how to treat Genevieve, so she simply nodded, then turned to look at the guys, who were talking at the side.
"How did he behave during the flight," Abigail asked Emily.
Emily shrugged. "He was okay."
"Want me to show you to his room?" She asked, remembering that she couldn’t leave yet since she’d promised to observe everything and spill the tea to Mari, sending her pictures and videos when necessary.
When Abigail gave her a nod, she led the way. The guys followed them, talking quietly.
"Do you really think he’s going to do that? I’m not sure speaking so harshly to him would make him do as you said," Jamal said, and Callan sighed.
"If he doesn’t then I’ll just let him be. I’m not ready to waste my time or emotions on someone irredeemable."
"So, you’re not going in with us?" Jamal asked, "I want you to."
"Then I guess I will," Callan assured him.
"Have you asked your parents about the stuff with Em?" Jamal whispered so that anyone else wouldn’t hear.
"Nah. I’ll do that after her program ends. I don’t want things to be awkward for everyone if they say no," he explained.
"You’re always thinking too much," Jamal muttered.
"Can’t help it. I’m an over-thinker," Callan said with a shrug.
When they got to Ryan’s room, Emily and Callan noticed that Mack was no longer standing outside the door.
They all stopped at the door, and Abigail looked at Callan, "Do you want to go in first?"
"He already spoke with him. That’s what we were talking about. But he’d go in with us," Jamal explained before Callan could.
"Oh. I see. So, how are we going in..." While Abigail was still talking, Genevieve stepped forward and pushed the door open, walking into the room.
