Chapter 418: More People
Chapter 418: More People
After returning from I-Global hotel and reporting the state of things to Harry over the phone, Jamal went to the restaurant to eat and then returned to his suite to freshen up before heading for Stefan’s suite.
He’d reported the situation of things to his grandfather and they’d all agreed he return to Ludus to take care of the company since Genevieve and Stefan were okay.
All he had to do now was take them to the safe house that had been prepared for him and Dawn when they left Ryan’s house.
Jamal knocked on the door, and a moment later Stefan opened it.
"Come in," Stefan said, and Jamal stepped in without wasting time.
"How was it?" Stefan asked as he shut the door behind him.
Jamal rubbed his palm over the back of his neck. "The place is sealed off as we saw on Tv," he said. "Police everywhere."
His voice was flat and tired. Then his gaze fell on Genevieve and for a second, his brain didn’t connect what he was seeing.
His brows pulled together. "Wait..." He took a step closer. "Genevieve?"
She smiled a little. "Hi."
Jamal blinked then looked at Stefan.
"The wonders of makeup, huh?" Stefan asked with amusement.
Jamal looked back at her. "You look... totally different," he said.
Stefan folded his arms like this was all normal. "Isn’t that the point of the makeover?"
Jamal let out a quiet breath through his nose. Of course it was.
"But that’s makeup, is it not? Why didn’t they get you a mask instead? What happens when you wash the makeup off your face and take off the wig and contact?"
Stefan answered calmly. "The artist said she’ll get one made for her. This is for now. To get us out of the hotel safely."
Jamal nodded slowly. "That makes sense."
"Everything right now has to make sense. There is no room for mistakes," Stefan said, then asked, "Uncle Harry said you’re taking us somewhere?"
"Yes. A safe house," Jamal said. "The one prepared for me and Dawn when we left Ryan’s house."
Even saying Dawn’s name made something pull in his chest. He missed her already.
"You are both to stay there until the passport is ready," Jamal added.
"Just us?" Genevieve asked.
"Yes. I have to be on my way back to Ludus in the morning. I came to offer Stefan emotional support. Thankfully you both have each other, so I can go take care of things at the company."
"Are you sure the company is the reason you’re leaving so quickly?" Stefan teased.
"Of course not," Jamal said, "I have to go meet the love of my life."
"I knew it," Stefan said and Genevieve giggled.
Jamal looked around the suite and then at them, "Are you ready to leave?"
"Yes," Stefan said, since they’d packed their bags.
Jamal didn’t waste more time. "Let’s go."
Genevieve walked out of the hotel easily without anyone looking at her suspiciously.
Jamal and Stefan made sure to keep her engrossed in a conversation so she wouldn’t feel nervous.
A few minutes later, they were all seated in the car.
Jamal sat in front beside the driver while Stefan and Genevieve sat in the back seat.
Jamal leaned back into the seat as the car pulled out and glanced at his wrist watch. It was past 7 p.m. that meant it was past 1 a.m. in Ludus and Dawn was sound asleep by now.
For a moment, he just stared ahead thinking about what a crazy day it had been and how exhausted he was.
Then Stefan spoke from the back. "Jamal, will you be my best man?"
Jamal turned fast. "What?" He twisted in his seat to look at them properly.
Stefan and Genevieve laughed.
"We are getting married when we get back to Ludus," Stefan announced.
"Why didn’t you say that at the hotel?" Jamal asked, smiling happily. "Congratulations. Dawn will be so happy," Jamal said.
He could already picture the joy on her face.
Genevieve smiled softly. "Thank you," they said in unison.
They were silent for a moment and Jamal couldn’t help thinking how Stefan and Genevieve would be getting married before them. He wondered if Callan and Emily would beat them to it too.
Then his thoughts shifted again to the phone call with Callan.
"Did you hear from Callan?" he asked Stefan.
Stefan nodded. "He called earlier."
Jamal frowned slightly. "Did you tell him?"
Stefan shook his head. "No." Stefan sighed. "I didn’t talk to him for long. I felt bad about not telling him the truth especially after he said his mother was upset."
Jamal said nothing. If it were up to him he’d tell Callan the truth. Too many people hurting over something that wasn’t even true.
Then Genevieve spoke. "I think I should call Delilah," she added. "I don’t want her to be upset over something that isn’t true."
Jamal understood that.
Stefan hesitated. "That’s more people," he said.
Jamal also understood Stefan’s reluctance to involve more people.
Genevieve shook her head gently. "Just people who deserve to know the truth. She’s my friend."
Jamal stayed quiet. Both of them had a point. And it was their business to handle.
Stefan exhaled. "I don’t have her number."
"I do," Jamal said and reached for his phone.
Then paused.
"But I think you should talk to Callan first before Genny talks to his mother," he added.
Stefan nodded slowly then glanced at the driver. "We can make the calls after we get to our destination," he said.
Jamal didn’t need to be told why he said that.
"Yeah," he said. "That’s better."
He settled back into his seat again and looked out through the windshield as the car moved smoothly down the road.
They spent hours on the road and soon tall trees and long, empty roads replaced the city.
When they reached the tall black gate. Cameras turned toward them and the gate opened without a sound, allowing the car go inside.
Like the last time, two men in black suits stood near the door and approached the car as it stopped in front of the mansion.
Jamal was the first to step out of the car and he exchanged pleasantries with the men who he recognized from before.
He introduced them to Stefan and Genevieve and after that they all went into the house.
Both Genevieve and Stefan finally relaxed as they walked into the house.
Jamal smiled as he looked around the living room, recalling the last time he’d been there with Dawn and Josh and how anxious he’d been.
Now it seemed like ages ago.
"Here is Mrs Quinn’s number," he said, calling out the number for Stefan to save it. "I’m off to bed. See you both in the morning," Jamal said before walking away.
