Chapter 421: Take It Back
Chapter 421: Take It Back
Callan leaned back in his chair with a wide smile on his face.
"Wow," he muttered under his breath.
Genevieve was alive.
Stefan was getting married.
Cindy was out of his life.
Everything felt good.
He dialed Emily’s number, excited to tell her everything.
It rang once then stopped.
He frowned slightly and checked the screen.
Call failed.
He tried again but the same thing happened.
He lowered the phone and glanced at the time. It was almost time for her shift to end at the hospital.
He sighed, then grabbed his keys. "I’ll just go there," he murmured, calculating that he’d get there just in time.
The drive to the hospital was smooth.
He kept smiling to himself and his fingers tapped lightly on the steering wheel as he drove.
When he got to the hospital, he stepped out of the car and walked in.
Doctors and nurses moved around.
He’d barely taken a few steps before he heard his name.
"Callan Quinn?"
He turned, wondering who it was.
Dr Loma’s eyes scanned him slowly as she walked toward him with a bright smile.
"Hi," he said politely, wondering who she was.
"I’m Dr Loma, Emily’s friend," she said, extending a hand, "Are you here to see her?" she asked in a friendly tone.
"Yes," he said as he shook her hand. "I tried calling her, but her line isn’t going through. Could you please let her know I’m here?"
Dr Loma tilted her head slightly. "She’s in surgery. No phones allowed," she said.
Callan smiled. He’d forgotten for a moment that Emily was a real doctor.
"That makes sense. I’ll wait," he said, turning to go wait in the car.
Dr Loma smiled wider and followed him, "If you don’t mind, I can keep you company while you wait."
Callan noticed it at once. Her tone and the way she kept smiling at him.
He stopped walking and shook his head lightly. "That won’t be necessary."
She chuckled softly. "Oh come on. I’m Emily’s good friend. She’s told me a lot about you."
Callan’s brows lifted slightly. "What has she told you?" he asked.
Dr Loma smiled knowingly. "I’ll tell you over dinner."
Callan shook his head. "I’m not that curious."
"Then over a drink," she said quickly.
"No."
She laughed. "Why are you playing hard to get? Everyone knows you enjoy good female company."
His expression stayed calm. "Aren’t you being a little too forward?"
At that moment, Emily stepped out of the surgery wing.
Her shoulders were slightly slumped, and her face looked tired.
But when her eyes landed on them, she stopped and her heart skipped a beat.
Her brows pulled together slightly.
Dr Loma was standing too close to Callan and they both seemed to be having a nice conversation judging by how she was laughing.
Her stomach clenched as she watched them.
Was Callan still flirting with other ladies behind her? Perhaps he would never really change. Or would he?
"Am I not your type?" Dr Loma asked again.
Before Callan could respond, he spotted Emily.
His face lit up immediately and he raised his hand and waved like a little boy who’d just seen his mom.
Then he started walking toward her, ignoring Dr Loma.
Again, Dr Loma followed.
Emily met him halfway. "I didn’t know you were here," she said, though her smile was small and tight.
"I tried calling," he said, taking in her tired face. "Your line wasn’t going through. She told me you were in surgery. You look exhausted."
Before Emily could reply, Dr Loma spoke.
"I was just telling him to buy me lunch or a drink," she said lightly.
"Oh," Emily said, forcing a smile.
Callan watched her, noticing how her smile didn’t reach her eyes. "Are you ready to go?"
"Can you both give me a lift?" Dr Loma asks before she could respond.
He turned back to Dr Loma. "We can’t," he said calmly. "We’re in a hurry."
Dr Loma turned to Emily. "Say something, Emily."
Emily shrugged lightly. "It’s his car. Whatever he says goes."
Dr Loma pouted. "I guess another time then," she said, then turned to Callan, "Can I have your number?"
Emily’s stomach tightened at the question.
"I need to get out of these," she said pointing at the scrubs on her, "I’ll get my bag and join you soon," she said hurriedly so she wouldn’t hear his response.
Callan frowned as he watched her go. "I’ll wait," he said.
Emily walked away quickly.
As she got to the changing room, Dan stepped in front of her.
"Hey," he said. "Next two weeks Friday is my birthday and I’m throwing a party. I’ll love you to be there."
She shook her head. "I can’t."
He followed her. "You haven’t even asked me for the details yet."
"Because I know I’m not going to be there so there’s no reason to ask. I’m not a party person," Emily said as she continued walking.
"Please, Emily. You’re my friend and I really want you there."
She sighed. "Fine. I’ll think about it. I’m in a hurry, so let’s talk another time."
Dan stepped aside and she went inside to change into her own clothes. When she was done, she returned and was both relieved and surprised to see that Callan was alone.
She paused. "Where is Dr Loma?" she asked.
Callan frowned slightly. "Why are you asking me that? Am I her keeper?"
"Shouldn’t you know where she is considering how you were flirting with her earlier?" Emily muttered under her breath then she turned to walk away. "Let’s go."
Callan grabbed her hand before she could walk past him.
She stopped and looked at him in surprise.
"Take that back," he said.
She blinked. "Take what back?"
"What you just said."
She frowned. "Why are you making it a big deal?"
"Because if it wasn’t a big deal you wouldn’t bring it up," he said. "So, take it back."
His voice was firm.
Emily pressed her lips together. "We are standing in the middle of the hospital."
"I can see that. And we are not leaving here until you take it back. We’re fixing it right here and now," Callan said, not minding that people were staring at them as they passed.
"She was obviously flirting with you..."
"But I didn’t flirt with her," he said through clenched teeth, "I turned her down clearly. I know you see me as Cal the jerk, but I don’t like that you’re insulting me by insinuating that I’d disrespect you and our relationship enough to flirt with your colleague in this manner."
Emily’s expression softened immediately. "I’m sorry," she said. "I take it back. You weren’t flirting with her."
He let go of her hand and walked away without another word.
