Chapter 469: Bored
Chapter 469: Bored
Genevieve wandered slowly through Tom’s large house with her hands clasped behind her back.
The house was quiet.
Tom and Lucy had gone to work early that morning.
Dawn and Josh had gone out with Jamal to check out a school for Josh.
Stefan was busy at work.
Everybody had something to do except her.
A few days had passed surprisingly quickly since her arrival in Ludus and the engagement.
Now the closer the wedding drew, the more restless she became.
Genevieve wandered into the kitchen and one of the chef smiled warmly.
“Would you like something to eat?”
Genevieve laughed. “I’ve eaten twice already and it’s barely 1 p.m. At this rate I might not fit my wedding dress.”
The older woman smiled. “I don’t think a little snacks would change anything.”
Genevieve laughed and shook her head. She’d come to realize that the woman loved to feed everyone. She seemed to like watching people eat the food she made.
“Thank you. That’s what you said the last time and every time I walk into the kitchen. You won’t be the one struggling to fit into the wedding dress.”
The woman laughed. “If you say so.”
“I’m just… bored. I came to see if there’s anything I could do,” she offered.
“Nope. There’s no way we are letting you do anything. You should be getting as much rest as you can. Once you get married and babies start coming you’re barely going to get enough rest anymore.”
Genevieve laughed. “It can’t be that bad.”
Another of the ladies in the kitchen nodded. “Yeah. It’s not that bad for rich folks. As long as you employ a couple of Nannies to assist you, you’ll be fine.”
“Not every mother can sleep easy leaving their baby with a nanny,” another pointed out.
Genevieve spent another hour chatting with the kitchen staff, enjoying the debate on motherhood.
When they started preparing dinner, she insisted on helping, saying she wanted to learn how to be useful around the kitchen for when she got married.
She washed and chopped the vegetables, and did whatever they let her do, and when everything was done, she thanked them and wandered away again.
She tried watching another movie but twenty minutes later she switched it off. She had already watched too many.
She walked into the library, looked through several books but none held her attention.
She wandered outside into the garden and walked around for a while then wandered back inside.
By the time she climbed the stairs again, she let out an exaggerated sigh.
“I am officially losing my mind.”
She wished she could just go out wearing her mask, but everyone had insisted that with or without her mask she needed to stay indoors until they were able to resolve the issue of her attempted murder.
Her phone rang just as she walked into her bedroom, and immediately her face lit up when she saw it was Stefan.
She answered before the second ring.
His smile was obvious even through the phone. “Hello, beautiful. What are you up to?”
Genevieve sighed dramatically as she walked out of the room again. “I’m bored out of my mind. Thank you so much for calling.”
Stefan laughed. “That bad?”
“Worse.”
“What have you been doing?”
“What haven’t I been doing?” she groaned dramatically. “I binge-watched several movies. Then I sat with the kitchen staff and chatted while helping them prepare lunch. Then I walked around the garden. I know every plant in the garden by name now.”
She flopped onto one of the sofas in the upstairs lounge. “And now I’m just walking around the house.”
Stefan chuckled. “So… you’re basically supervising the furniture?”
“I did that days ago already. I think I’m going crazy. I don’t even know what to do with myself anymore.”
His laughter echoed through the phone. “I’m sorry. Maybe you could spend the time dreaming about our wedding and coming up with the names of our kids.”
Genevieve laughed. “Trust me I have all the names of our kids and grandkids already. I’ve been dreaming.”
“Oh?”
“Oh.”
“Tell me about it then,” Stefan encouraged.
“I’ve imagined the wedding. Our first dance. Our first breakfast as husband and wife in our own home prepared by me as your loving wife.”
Stefan smiled to himself. “I like the sound of that.”
“So do I.”
“And the names of our kids?” Stefan asked.
“Those are still subject to your approval. They’re our kids after all, but I’d love our first daughter to be named Dawn,” she said.
Stefan raised a brow. “Dawn?”
“Yeah. And Dawn would be her godmother,” Genevieve said.
“Okay. Whatever her majesty says,” Stefan said, suspecting that she wanted to do that sort of to make up for her role in ruining Dawn’s childhood.
A comfortable silence settled between them. Then Genevieve remembered something.
“How’s the house hunt going?”
“Smoothly.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. I-Global Realtors are handling it.”
Genevieve raised a brow. “So you’re not looking yourself?”
“I barely have the time. And I’m okay with looking through the pictures until I find something worth going to survey in person.”
She smiles. “You know I could go take a look at them, right? It’s not like I have anything doing.”
“You’re doing a lot, baby. You’re staying alive and protecting yourself for my mental health.”
Genevieve laughed. “Then at least send me the pictures of the houses.”
“I want it to be surprise,” Stefan said.
Genevieve rolled her eyes. “What if you get someplace I don’t like?”
“Do you really believe I don’t know you enough to know what you’d like?” Stefan countered.
Genevieve smiled. “Maybe you do. But I still think I should see the place and have a say in our choice of home since it’s where I’ll be spending the rest of my life with you.”
Stefan paused. “Alright. When they send me suitable options, I’ll forward them to you.”
Genevieve twirled a strand of hair around her finger. “It’s barely four days before our wedding. What if the house isn’t ready by then?”
“It doesn’t have to be.”
She frowned. “It doesn’t?”
Stefan smiled. “We’ll be on our honeymoon. So even if we don’t move in before the wedding, we’ll certainly have somewhere ready by the time we return.”
“Oh.” Genevieve relaxed. “That makes sense.”
“It usually does when I’m speaking.”
She laughed. “I’ll let that confidence slide because we’re getting married.”
“Wise decision.”
She smiled. “But is Jamal really going to let you disappear on a honeymoon? I thought he said you should consider our one week together your honeymoon?”
Stefan burst into laughter. “Of course he was just kidding. He already approved my leave.”
Genevieve laughed. “Jamal is so sweet.”
“Not as sweet as me though.”
She smiled. “Of course. No one is sweeter than you. Besides, you’ve worked hard enough to deserve a honeymoon.”
Stefan chuckled. “I suppose I have.” Then he asked, “So… do you have any special plans for your bachelorette?”
Genevieve shook her head even though he couldn’t see her. “Not really. I’ll probably be at home with Dawn. What can we do when I’m practically under house arrest?”
Stefan smiled. “Too bad.”
“What about you?”
“I have plans.” He sounded far too pleased with himself. “The Gentlemen’s Club is throwing me a bachelor party.”
Genevieve gasped dramatically. “How lucky.”
“I know.”
She laughed. “Are you trying to make me jealous?”
“You should be.”
“Well, I’m choosing peace.”
“I guess that’s better,” he said with a chuckle.
Another comfortable silence settled between them. Neither seemed eager to end the call.
Finally Genevieve spoke again. “I miss you.”
His smile softened. “I miss you too. I can’t wait until all this is over.”
“Me neither.” She stretched out across the sofa. “You know…”
“Hm?”
“I’m never taking my freedom to move freely for granted again after now.”
Stefan laughed as he glanced at his wristwatch, then he rose.
He wondered if he should mention to her that he was going over to the Rehab center to see her mother.
“I need to go now,” he said, deciding not to tell her since he didn’t want to burden her with that especially after her reaction the last time.
Genevieve sighed. “I know. Thanks for calling despite how busy you must be.”
“You know, I actually called because my sensor told me you were lonely.”
She burst into laughter. “Your sensor must be advanced technology.”
“Very advanced. It has a one hundred percent success rate.”
Genevieve smiled. “Well… thank your sensor for me.”
“I will.”
She smiled warmly. “Get back to work then. And make sure you come see me soon, else I’m going to sneak off and come see you.”
Stefan laughed. “I’ll see you tomorrow. I promise,” he said, then added. “I love you.”
Her heart fluttered. “I love you too.”
A second later, the call ended.
Genevieve looked at the phone screen for several seconds before smiling to herself.
She wasn’t nearly as bored anymore.
