Stolen Identity: Mute Heiress

Chapter 502: Hurt

Chapter 502: Hurt

After Jamal ended the call with Callan, he remained in his seat for a few seconds, then he stood.

He grabbed his car keys from the table and headed for the door. He was going to see Dawn.

He needed to talk to her and hear what she really meant.

The moment he got into his car and switched on the ignition, he dialled Dawn’s number.

The call did not go through. He frowned as he tried again. Still, it did not connect.

“What is going on?”

He wondered as he dialed Lucy’s line to find out if she was at home.

Lucy answered after a few rings. “Jamal, you just interrupted my facials. This had better be urgent.”

“Sorry. I couldn’t reach Dawn, so I was calling to know if you were at home.”

“Oh. We’re at the spa. She’s having her nails done.”

“Aunt Aurora’s spa?”

“Yes.”

“Glad I called. I just drove past it,” Jamal said as he started to make a U-turn.

“Oh. Are you coming to meet us?”

“Yes. I’ll be taking Dawn with me when she’s done. I hope you don’t mind?”

“Why should I mind? She was worried about you earlier. You two have fun. Love you.”

“Love you too,” Jamal said as he ended the call.

He drove towards the spa, his mind was already working through what he would say.

He knew he owed her an apology for leaving without talking to her. He would apologise first and then he would make sure they trashed the subject.

He would ask her what she needed. And he would make sure to listen without getting defensive.

Just as he turned onto the road near the spa, he sighted Dawn walking out of a café.

He slowed down.

He started to smile, but his smile faltered when he noticed that she was not alone.

A man was walking beside her.

Why was she walking out of a café with a man when Lucy said she was getting her nails done?

He watched them cross the small space between the café and a phone repair shop.

The man opened the door for her. Then the two of them entered the phone repair shop.

Jamal’s hands tightened around the steering wheel as he took a closer look at the man.

He frowned when he saw it was Adam, Aurora’s spa manager.

For a moment, he wanted to go find out what was going on, but he didn’t.

Instead, he parked farther down the road and remained in his car by the roadside, where he could observe what was going on.

A few minutes passed, then the door opened again, and Dawn came out with the man.

She was holding her phone.

The man looked pleased.

Jamal stared at them as they started walking back toward the spa, talking like they’d known each other for a long time.

Dawn laughed at something Adam said, and Jamal’s heart gave a strange, hard beat.

Jamal’s jaw tightened as he watched them. “What is she doing with him?”

Jamal felt something hot move through his chest when Dawn smiled up at Adam as she talked to him.

His fingers tapped against the steering wheel when Adam stopped in front of the spa and pulled out his phone.

Jamal watched as he said something to Dawn.

Dawn shook her head.

Adam smiled and held out his phone.

Dawn looked at him for a moment, then she took it.

Jamal’s stomach tightened.

He could not hear what they were saying. But he saw Dawn type something into the man’s phone.

A second later, Adam looked at his screen and smiled, then he held out his hand.

She took it.

They did not let go immediately. Adam said something, and Dawn laughed.

Jamal’s grip on the steering wheel became tighter as he watched them.

Jamal’s eyes followed them as they continued into the spa, and something inside him twisted.

He had left Dawn that morning because he needed time to think.

He had spent the last few hours worrying about whether she was attracted to him.

He had been hurt because the woman he loved with his life had told him she wanted more passion.

And now he was watching another man hold her hand and make her laugh. He was watching her give him her number.

His chest suddenly felt so tight he could barely breathe.

His mind was no longer thinking about the conversation he had planned to have with Dawn.

All he could see was her smiling at Adam. All he could think about was the way she had told him she wanted chemistry.

His jaw clenched.

“Was that what she meant?”

He hated the thought. He hated how quickly jealousy had entered his heart.

Most of all, he hated that he suddenly felt as if he was not good enough for her.

Jamal’s gaze remained on the entrance of the spa long after they had disappeared inside.

He knew he could get out of the car and go inside to confront her.

He could hear what happened. Why she gave Adam her number. Why she let him hold her hand that way. He knew he could choose to trust her that she would not betray what they had.

But he didn’t.

Right now, his emotions were louder than his reason.

He couldn’t see past Dawn allowing another man to hold her hand that way in public while she laughed at whatever he said that way.

All he could think about was that she had been flirting with another man right after telling him the night before that she didn’t feel sexually attracted to him.

Jamal reversed the car and drove away.

The farther he got from the spa, the heavier his chest felt.

He had left home because he wanted to understand his relationship with Dawn.

Now he was going back home with even more questions than before.

And this time, there was another man in the middle of them.

Maybe he had been wrong about them being soul mates.

Maybe Dawn was the one for him, but he wasn’t the one for her.
