Chapter 521: Four Kids
Chapter 521: Four Kids
Jamal stared at Dawn, not sure how to feel or react.
A part of him was very happy to see them. That he could not deny. But the other part of him was wondering what she was up to.
He’d told her clearly that they needed a break.
He needed a break.
Why was she here?
Dawn held his gaze, taking note of how exhausted and sad he looked.
She’d had asked Lucy to send someone over to pick up the car so that when Jamal got home he wouldn’t see the car parked in front of the house and know they were inside.
“You look exhausted. First go in to freshen up and then we can have dinner,” Dawn said after a while when he didn’t say a word.
Jamal looked down at Josh with a smile, then crouched. “How are you, buddy? How was school today?”
Josh’s arms went around Jamal’s neck. “I’m fine. I missed you so much.”
“I missed you, too,” Jamal said, ruffling his hair. “I’ll freshen up quickly, and then you can tell me all about your new friends at school.”
Josh nodded.
As Jamal walked away to his bedroom, Josh looked at Dawn, and then she gave him a subtle nod before following Jamal.
The moment they walked into the bedroom and shut the door behind them, Dawn embraced Jamal before he could speak.
Jamal stood still for a moment as her arms wrapped around him. Then he let out a deep breath.
“What are you doing, Dawn?” He asked quietly.
“Embracing my husband,” she murmured.
Jamal’s heart twisted at her words. “Dawn…”
She stepped back to look at him. “You look very exhausted. Go freshen up and then we can have dinner.”
Jamal didn’t say a word.
He was too exhausted to say anything right now.
He headed for the closet to pick fresh clothes, and the moment he stepped inside the closet, he paused when he saw that she had reorganised his clothes.
He’d always imagined how different and colourful his closet would be when they got married and she moved in and took over part of the closet.
He turned to look at her, his heart aching.
She was standing in the middle of the room, watching him.
Without saying a word, he reached into his drawers for his pajamas, then headed for the bathroom.
“You’re not going to say anything?” Dawn asked.
Jamal said nothing to her as he walked into the bathroom.
Dawn sighed when he shut the door behind him.
At least he wasn’t asking her to leave.
Inside the bathroom, Jamal turned on the shower and stood under it for a moment, just staring at the wall.
What was he going to do with Dawn?
He couldn’t possibly send her and Josh away. This was their home, and they would always be welcome there.
He couldn’t leave them alone in the house either and go somewhere else just to avoid Dawn.
That would pass the wrong message to Josh.
That meant he had to stay under the same roof with her and face her every day.
Exhaling deeply, he quickly freshened up so he could go spend some time with Josh before it was his bedtime.
Jamal returned to the bedroom to see Dawn seated on the bed waiting for him.
He said nothing to her as he dried his hair, but from the side of his eyes, he could see her watching him.
“Let’s go have dinner,” Dawn said after he set down the towel.
Jamal headed for the door, and she quickly followed, linking her arm with his before he could guess what she was up to.
As they walked into the living room, Josh looked up and smiled when he saw them together.
“Daddy! Mommy!” He called as he hurried over to join them with his drawing book.
“Look what I painted,” he said, showing them a picture of what looked like five people.
“Who are those?” Jamal asked, lifting Josh into his arms so he could see the drawing.
Dawn leaned closer to Jamal to get a look at it too.
“This is Daddy,” Josh said, pointing to the largest figure on the book, “this is Mommy,” he said, pointing to the second.
“And who are these? You?” Dawn asked playfully.
“This is me, and this is my baby brother and sister.”
Dawn grinned. “You are going to have to add one more person to this picture, Josh. You will have a brother and two sisters.”
Jamal looked at Dawn.
She smiled at him. “You did say four kids, didn’t you?” She reminded him of their conversation when he first brought them to the house. (Chapter 319)
Yes. Four kids, Jamal thought, but said nothing.
“Yaaay!” Josh said happily. “Can I name them when they come?”
“Sure,” Dawn said easily.
“Are you going to have them at the same time like the Bees?”
Dawn giggled. “What do you think, Jam? Triplets?”
Jamal’s lips twitched at the thought. He ruffled Josh’s hair. “When the time comes we will find out. Let’s go have dinner, buddy!”
“Yes.”
When they got to the dining room, and Dawn opened the dinner bowls, Jamal paused when he saw that she had made his favourite meal, which his mother had prepared the last time.
Immediately, he realised why his first thought had been of his mother when he opened the door.
She smiled at him. “I don’t think it will taste as good as your mum’s, but I gave it my best shot.”
A lump formed in Jamal’s throat.
Dawn served some into his plate first before dishing out some for Josh and herself.
After serving the meal, she sat down and looked at Jamal expectantly as she waited for him to try it.
Josh took a forkful first. “It’s yum yum, Daddy!” He exclaimed happily.
Dawn smiled at him. “Thank you, baby.”
Jamal smiled at him. “I bet it is,” he said, before taking a forkful.
The moment he tasted it, tears gathered in his eyes, and he looked away from Dawn and Josh as he chewed slowly.
“It’s delicious,” he said softly.
Dawn smiled at him. “I’m glad. Let’s eat up, everyone.”
Jamal had not had a proper meal for the past two days because he didn’t have the appetite for anything.
And even now, he had no appetite. His heart ached so much he could barely swallow. Still, he forced himself to eat.
His favourite person had taken her time to make his favourite meal, and he owed it to her to enjoy it regardless of whatever was going on between them.
For most of dinner, Jamal listened to Josh chatter about school and his new friends and favourite teacher.
Every time he glanced at Dawn, he met her gaze, and she flashed him a smile or blew him a kiss.
He couldn’t imagine what she was thinking, and he had no idea how he felt about it.
He was just emotionally exhausted.
