Chapter 526: Trashing It (2)
Chapter 526: Trashing It (2)
Dawn decided to go ahead and also express her displeasure since she wanted them to clear it all up now that Jamal seemed more inclined to hear her out.
“If the case were reversed, would you want me to behave the way you did? Would you expect me to end things without even giving you the benefit of doubt?”
“I gave you the benefit of doubt when I asked why you missed Lucy,” Jamal said defensively.
“Yet you went behind me to call the spa? Have you ever even trusted me? Have you stopped to think that I wouldn’t have missed Lucy in the first place had you picked me up or told her you changed your mind? Do you want to know the first thing Adam said when he heard you spoke with the reception? He asked if you had so little faith in me!”
“So you’re turning the table? Is that what this is?” Jamal asked with a resigned sigh.
“There is no table to turn, Jamal. This is not about passing blame or winning an argument or a fight. It is about us fighting for our relationship. Let’s fight the problem, not each other.”
“So we should go fight Adam?” Jamal asked dryly.
Dawn paused for a moment, then she laughed when she saw the glint in his eyes and realised he was teasing her.
“Adam is not the problem. The problem here is your reaction to everything. I was wrong, I’m not taking that out or making excuses. But your reaction to my observation about our chemistry is what brought us here. And your reaction to seeing me with Adam is off. You claim to be big on communication, but you’re not. You only want to communicate when I’m the one who’s upset. You run off when something sensitive is said to you, and then you overthink it instead of just talking.”
Jamal frowned. “So, I’m the problem…”
Dawn sighed with exaggerated patience. “You know what? Let’s take this one at a time. Let’s start from the first issue and clear it all up slowly.”
“Okay…”
“How did what I said make you feel? Why didn’t you talk to me about it?”
Jamal was silent for a moment, then he looked away from her and shrugged. “It made me feel like maybe I was wrong.”
“About what?”
“About us being soulmates. I felt maybe you were my soulmate, but I wasn’t yours. I felt maybe I forced my feelings on you. Maybe we are not compatible. Love is not always enough.”
“You didn’t force your feelings on me. We have more than love, and we are very compatible. And I believe strongly that you’re my soulmate. You weren’t wrong about us,” Dawn said softly, reaching for his hand.
“Sex is not a big deal for me, Dawn. I enjoy it, but it’s not something I spend a lot of time fantasising about or want to do all the time. So if that’s what you want…”
“It is not a big deal for me either,” Dawn cut in. “But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have some spark or chemistry. Our relationship feels dull compared to…”
“Compared to?” Jamal cut in quietly.
Dawn opened her mouth, then shut it.
“By whose standard are you judging what we have?” Jamal asked, staring at her.
She shrugged. “During Genny’s bridal shower, the others talked about how difficult it was for them to keep their hands off their partners and vice versa. With us, it is different. It just felt weird, and I thought I should talk about it.”
Jamal rubbed his eyes. “So you brought it up not because you thought what we had was bad or not good enough but because you want us to be like the others?”
She winced. “When you say it that way, I sound shallow. That’s not what I mean entirely. I’m just saying we could do with more fun. Not just for me. I want that for us. I want our relationship to be more exciting. We can both work on it.”
Jamal stared at her for a long moment. “You really don’t want to explore other options…”
Dawn shook her head immediately. “No! I don’t need to explore anyone else. I thought I was going to die of a broken heart yesterday. You are all I want.”
She wasn’t saying he wasn’t enough for her.
She wasn’t saying she wanted something else.
All she wanted was for them to put in more work into their relationship to make it exciting.
She loved him too and believed he was her soulmate.
He’d not been wrong about them.
So, why had he overthought it and let it affect everything else? Jamal wondered.
Before Jamal realised what was happening, he was crying, overwhelmed with relief.
Dawn’s eyes widened.
Taken aback by his tears, she quickly rose and hurried over to meet him, hugging him.
Jamal’s hands wrapped around her as he buried his face in her chest and wept.
Why hadn’t he just asked her to explain more? Why had he misunderstood her and almost ruined what they had? Why had he jumped into all the wrong conclusions?
Now he couldn’t even remember all he’d been thinking then or why he’d seemed so convinced that they were not meant for each other.
“I’m sorry,” Dawn whispered over and over again as she patted his hair.
“I’m sorry,” Jamal said softly. “I’m sorry I misunderstood you.”
“I should have communicated it in a way that you wouldn’t misunderstand,” she said softly as tears gathered in her eyes.
She knew they were not there yet, but she was glad that they’d been able to clear up at least one misunderstanding.
She knew this was the basic one that had led to everything else and made him doubt her feelings for him.
If they could clear this up, then she knew that they would clear up the others more easily.
She rested her chin on top of his head, and sighed softly as she recalled Jamal weeping this way when she told him about Josh.
She’d known since then that he was the emotional and expressive type, yet seeing him this way over their misunderstanding made her realise just how upset he must have been the last couple of days.
“Am I to assume you’ve forgiven me?” Dawn asked softly when he started to quiet down.
Jamal looked up, his eyes still wet, but before he could say anything, Josh walked into the kitchen, rubbing his eyes. “Mommy? I’m hungry.”
