Chapter 30 – Princess Annemarie’s House
The dark elf villagers were invited to the Chris. As a result, Romano-san’s resolve was complete, and as punishment, he was left to make a map of the island by himself. Although the other dark elves were relieved of their tension, the feast ended with them clinging to the beautiful wine and food and the letter from the Goddess of the Forest-sama.
“Wataru-sama. I will surely accomplish this!”
“Ah, yes. Do your best.”
Three days after the feast on the Chris, Romano-san left to make the map. I could feel the determination on the man’s back as he left on his own. I hope he will complete the project and not say anything more troublesome about punishment or giving up everything.
“I will not allow you to enter the village until you have done it. You will do it on your own!”
“You must do it properly. Do not get hurt. And don’t cut corners because I won’t tolerate half measures.”
“Oh, hey…”
His parents are talking to the departing Romano-san next to me, but I think they are being a little too Spartan. If he can’t get into the village, how will he get food and stuff?
“Romano-san. You can go back to the village. If you run out of food or get sick or injured, come back properly!”
I shouted hurriedly in a loud voice, but Romano-san bowed deeply to me and walked away without leaving. Oh, he’ll come back properly if he’s in trouble, won’t he?
“Wataru-sama. I appreciate your concern for my son, but that kind of thing is neither punishment nor good for him.”
…Why do I have to be warned by Romano-san’s father?
“No, mapping is much harder work than you think. He needs to replenish his food supply and treat his illnesses and injuries.”
I don’t know what would have happened to Romano-san outside of my control, but if he had died in a situation I was involved in, I would have had a bad night’s sleep.
Oh, damn. I should have arranged for him to come back and report to me from time to time instead of just teaching him how to do the survey.
Should I go after him now? No, I have a feeling I might get into trouble if I help him. It would be better for the village chief to report to me now.
“Besides, I would like to know how the mapping project is going, so I would like regular reports. Village Chief-san, could you please arrange that? If I am not here, the chief should receive the reports.”
I shake the job to the village chief, who has just come to see him off and remains silent. He looks at Romano-san as if he’s going to watch over him strictly but warmly, but I won’t let him get away with it.
I’ll have the village chief do the job, too, because he was there when Romano-san went down on his knees and didn’t even follow up.
“A report?”
“Yes. At least give him some food and medical treatment at that time. Oh, Romano-san is leaving. I’ll ask you to make arrangements.”
“I-I understand.”
The village chief rushed after Romano-san. That way, he won’t die of hunger or anything like that.
When I look at Romano-san’s parents, they look a little happy even though they look tough. Even though they say tough things on the surface, they are still worried about him.
Feeling a bit relieved, let’s visit the mermaid village next. It hasn’t been that long since they started the construction, but I hear they’re making a lot of progress because the mermaids are working at full capacity.
In addition, they also went to look for coral colony areas, so they must be really looking forward to their coral-decorated houses.
“Ah, it’s Wataru-niichan!”
“Wataru-niichan is here!”
“Feast, sweets!”
“Big ship!”
Oh no, while I was lazing around, the dark elf children spotted me. I should have moved quickly.
The children are all over me. I don’t feel bad about being befriended by children, but in the case of these children, their desires are written all over their faces, and that bothers me. At least hide your drool.
“Hey, you kids! Don’t be selfish to Wataru-sama! Come on, stop playing with yourselves, and go help at home!”
When I didn’t know what to do, Romano-san’s father sent the children away.
Even though he is a man who can scold the children so firmly, why did Romano-san turn out like that?
“I’m sorry, Wataru-sama. They seemed to enjoy their time on the ship very much, and I hope you will forgive them.”
“Haha, I’m glad the children enjoyed it. I will invite you again sometime in the future, so please look forward to it.”
“You will invite us again?”
“Yes, I intend to.”
Because the last time I invited them, the invitation was almost over in the main hall. Everyone was in a loop of letters from the Goddess of the Forest-sama, treats, and drinks, and my preparation was almost all for naught.
I didn’t want to brag, but at least I could tell them a little more about the luxury liner.
“Can we have that wonderful experience again? Thank you very much. But won’t the cost be enormous?”
“No, no, I make a lot of money, so it’s no problem at all. Oh, and… please tell the children that if they don’t help out at home properly, they will be left at home.”
I wonder what they would think if he knew that it didn’t cost me much? …I have a feeling that he would be afraid of that, so it’s better to keep it a secret.
“I know that Wataru-sama is immeasurable in our imagination. But keeping them at home…? Then maybe those kids will change from being the bad kids of the village to being good kids.”
I’ve become immeasurable. Well, at the time of the Goddess of the Forest-sama’s letter, it was too late, so it didn’t matter.
But still, those kids are certified bad kids, aren’t they?
I know they’ve done a lot of things, so it usually makes sense.
But the villagers also seem happy with the children, who play pranks in good spirits, perhaps because they are a race that has a hard time having children. Except when they’re hungover…
Somehow, I got into a conversation with Romano-san’s father, but it’s time to move on. If I relax, the bad kids will try to set something up.

“What do you think, Wataru-sama!”
“Um, I think it’s wonderful.”
In front of me, Princess Annemarie proudly spreads her hands. But I can understand why she wants to show off.
Under the sea, the sunlight shimmers in the waves.
Schools of small fish swim around, reflecting the sparkling light, and Rimu, Fuu-chan, Beni-chan, and Pent swim around, moving their tiny tails that have formed.
Seaweed swaying in the air.
Mermaids swimming around.
And the underwater village, not yet complete, but beginning to take shape.
The male ratio of mermaids is a little high, but it is a fantastic sight, and not only me but Ines, Felicia, Alessia-san, and the others are gazing at the scene before our eyes.
Even though it is still a work in progress, it is no wonder that Princess Annemarie is so proud of it when it has taken such good shape.
If the colorful corals were to be decorated from here, I think I would believe it even if it were called the Dragon Palace. [T/N: From Japanese folklore.]
“Fufu, thank you very much. Now, let me show you inside.”
Princess Annemarie, perhaps pleased with my reaction, smiled and pulled me by the hand as we walked through the village.
…I wonder what it would be like to be led by the hand of a young mermaid.
…I’m a little embarrassed, but I can’t ask her to let go of my hand, so I decided to be mature and let Princess Annemarie guide me. But, Lea-san, please stop looking at me with those smiling eyes.
This will be someone’s house. This one will be a food store… Princess Annemarie is trying her best to show me around the village.
She may be young, but she seems to have a firm grasp on the village, perhaps as the person in charge of this village.
“Hmm? Is that big building Princess Annemarie’s house?”
It might be big enough, but it seems simple for a princess’s house.
The other mermaids’ houses are rounded and have a small second floor and a veranda, so we can see more of the mermaids’ attention to detail than we saw in the village blueprints.
But the large building is a simple square.
“No, that building is the dining hall. My house is that one!”
I see… the dining hall. There are a lot of male soldiers, so a dining hall is necessary. But isn’t the building Princess Annemarie is proudly pointing at rather small?
“Um, is it really okay for a princess to live in a house that size? Won’t it be a problem when your vassals gather, or other guests arrive?”
It is hard not to wonder about guests coming to a village in the sea, but there will certainly be people sent from the Mermaid Kingdom.
Do they have a separate building for guests?
“That will be fine. We will build a place for everyone to do their work, so the guests will stay there.
Does that mean they will build a separate building like a town hall? In medieval times, the house of the lord or village chief would have played such a role, but the mermaids were very progressive in separating work and private life.
Still, the house seems small.
“Um, is it okay that the princess’ house is smaller than the vassal’s house?”
“It’s fine.”
Princess Annemarie assures with a smile.
“Wataru-sama. This house is based on a famous fairy tale handed down to the mermaids. Please don’t worry, it’s just the princess’s idea. In case of an emergency, there will be no problem because we will be packed into the mansion.”
When I was wondering whether it was really okay or not, Lea-san quietly told me the reason.
I see; that little house was built with the same feeling as a child who longs for a candy house.
I thought she was usually a firm princess, so it’s a bit of a relief to see her childish side.
I thought it would be hard being away from her family, but if she has the strength to get the house she wants, I think she’ll be fine.
But you know what? A house decorated with coral is like a fairy tale, but if you rebuild a fairy tale house, it’ll be even more fantastic.
…The mermaid house alone is a fantasy, so I think it’s a little late for that. I’m looking forward to finishing the village.
