Chapter 4 – Let’s Find a Base!
The festival, which also served as a welcoming party for the mermaids in the dark elf village, was a great success. It was a happy celebration for me as well as for Felicia, as it relieved her of some of her deep-seated guilt. Well, Ines got a little sulky…
“Wataru-sama. The song of the dark elves yesterday was wonderful, wasn’t it?”
The morning after the festival, on the way to the Dark Elves’ island on the Seeker, Princess Annemarie spoke to me happily.
We had a campfire and everything, but it was the singing that made the biggest impression on Princess Annemarie.
As a proponent of the campfire, I was a little disappointed, but I couldn’t help but wonder how much the dark elves had practiced their singing. I guess it couldn’t be helped since it was at that level.
“Indeed. That was my thought as well. Come to think of it, do mermaids sing?”
I could hear their voices even underwater, so it’s not surprising that they sing. And I also have an image of mermaids singing while playing the lyre on a rocky beach in a picture book.
“We sing too, but the sirens are more amazing at singing. Their voices are as great as those of the dark elves!”
“I see. Siren-san’s singing voice is…”
Huh? Wasn’t the siren a monster whose lower body was a bird or a fish? I think there was a terrible anecdote about their singing voice bewitching sailors and sinking ships.
I don’t think my summoned ship would ever be sunk, but if I can hear their voices, there’s a chance I could be mesmerized, right? As someone who lives by the sea, I’m a little afraid of them.
“Um, Princess Annemarie?”
Princess Annemarie looks at me with a very unhappy face.
“Princess Annemarie?”
“It’s Annemarie!”
Ah, you mean you don’t want me to call you Princess. It’s too hard to just call Alessia-san and the others, but it’s too hard to call the Princess, too…
But I guess if I don’t call her that, the conversation won’t go anywhere. I tried to ask Lea-san for help in a bad way, but she silently shook her head.
I’m supposed to be respected as an apostle of Creator God-sama, but why am I in such a weak position?
“…Um, Annemarie.”
“Yes. What is it?”
It’s a cute smile, but for me, it’s a smile that defeats me. It’s sad.
“Aren’t sirens monsters?”
“Are they monsters? They are a race that can put magic into their songs, so for a while, they were misunderstood and treated as monsters, but in fact, they are a race almost like us mermaids, and not monsters.”
If they are not monsters but a race almost like mermaids, then the sirens of this world must be beings with the lower half of a fish.
They seem to be able to put magic into their singing voice, and it is interesting that they are subtly connected to the lore of Earth.
But they seem to be friends with mermaids and not monsters, so that’s a relief for me, too. I don’t think I’ll be attacked or enchanted by them.
“Oh, I didn’t know that. I’ve never met a siren, and I’d like to hear them sing one day. It would be interesting if they came to this island or something.”
“That would be fun! I’ll write to them when I get settled on this island. It would be wonderful to hear a choir of sirens and dark elves!”
Oh, she can invite them with a letter. As expected from a princess.
But Princess Annemarie’s proposal certainly sounds interesting. Dark elves and sirens together… it’s a fantasy.
Oh, we’ve just seen the Dark Elf Island, so let’s change the subject to today’s objective. I’m interested in the sirens, but the mermaids’ residence is the problem that needs to be solved first.
“Then shall we decide where Annemarie and the others will live so that you can invite them as soon as possible?”
“Yes, that’s right! Ah, Wataru-sama. Are you sure that we are free to choose where we want to live?”
“Yes, you are free to choose. The dark elves only go out to sea to fish, but since the mermaids will take care of the fishing, they said they would leave everything up to you, and you can go wherever you want.”
The dark elf clan, who originally lived in the forest and used the lake as their home base, were not familiar with the sea, so they could not use it effectively.
They would get small fish or shellfish or something, but that was about it, so leaving it to the mermaids, whose home was the sea, would not be a bad choice.
“They have high expectations of us, don’t they? I understand! As a princess, I want to live up to the dark elves’ expectations! Let’s go, everyone!”
Princess Annemarie, transformed into a mermaid… or rather, back into her mermaid form, jumps directly into the sea from the deck of the Seeker.
Following Princess Annemarie, Lea-san and the accompanying mermaids quickly jump into the sea.
Princess Annemarie has become very active. Does she have too much power with her increased level?
“Wataru, we’re leaving too.”
After the mermaids, Alessia-san and the others transformed into mermaids and jumped into the sea. I still get a little nervous when Alessia-san calls me Wataru. It’s like junior high school all over again, sweet and sour and embarrassing.
Princess Annemarie, the 50 mermaids, and Alessia-san are gone one by one, and the ship is suddenly quiet.
“You’re not leaving, are you, Master?”
“Yes. I drank a lot of alcohol yesterday, and I want to relax a bit today. If Ines wants to go, you can go too, okay?”
Once a base is chosen, it is enough to go and see the place. Swimming around and exploring the island sounds fun, but I don’t feel like it today, so I’ll do that later.
But everyone is in a good mood, right? Well, I guess it’s because last night’s festival was a welcome party for the mermaids, and they were too reserved to play it perfectly, so they didn’t drink until everyone was hungover.
“I’ll keep Master company today, too. Felicia isn’t here either.”
Ines is much nicer than before. I feel a little sorry that I used the card to scare her, considering that she is so afraid of her mother.
But I don’t regret playing the card, because the kind Ines is a pleasure for me, too.
I sit with Ines on the sofa on the deck under the sun and watch Rimu and Pent play.
It’s so elegant if you just take this one scene out of the picture. It’s the kind of elegance that is shared by the luxury of leisurely watching a large dog run around a spacious yard in a mansion. It’s a winning life, isn’t it?
Hmm? Rimu approaches us. Is it a snack?
“…Rimu also swims…”
I guess it wasn’t a snack. When he swims, he wants the sacred treasure. When I gave him the sacred treasure I received for Rimu, he immediately took it into his body and grew a small tail. The tail is still as beautiful as ever.
“…I’m going…”
“Yes. Don’t go too far away from the ship.”
“…Got it…”
There are no monsters here that can defeat Rimu, so the only thing I’m worried about is him getting lost. Well, Rimu is a good boy, so if he pays attention, he will not leave the ship, and if I check on him once in a while, he will be fine.
Rimu jumps into the sea with Pent.
…When he transforms into his angel form, he grows wings, and when he transforms into a mermaid, he grows a tail. It may be the slime that changes in the most diverse ways in the world. As expected from Rimu.
“Ufufu. It’s just the two of us.”
“Yes, it’s just the two of us, but why are you grinning so much?”
What’s wrong with Ines?
“I was wondering if I would be attacked.”
“No, I wouldn’t attack you without knowing when someone is coming back. You know what I mean, don’t you?”
“I knew it. Master, you have changed. The master I met in the past would have been red-faced and nervous even if he knew it was coming.”
I guess that’s true, but it takes some getting used to. How many times do you think I’ve had sex with Ines?
“Um… what do you want to say, Ines?”
I don’t feel comfortable with the way she’s talking, and she seems a little desperate, don’t you think?
“I think we should be honest with each other. If there is a problem, we will discuss it and solve it just like we did when we first met, me and Master, without involving anyone else. I want you to promise me that.”
I see, that’s what you wanted to talk about.
“Uh, what do you think will happen when Princess Annemarie finds the base?”
Oh, that’s right. We were going to gather materials to build a house, right?
On land, the dark elves are going to build a building for mermaids in the dark elf village, so what I am collecting are materials for building in the sea.
I heard that Princess Annemarie has a carpenter in her party, so once the location is decided, I can get the materials for the house and take them to her.
Since the house is underwater, the building materials are mainly stones, but I have experience in this area from when I built the orphanage, so I should be able to gather the materials without any problem.
“Wait, Master. Don’t change the subject. I’m talking about something important.”
“But you know what? I think it would be good for mermaids to live on land since they have the sacred treasure that allows them to live on land. Don’t you think so, Ines?”
The mermaids said that they could live on land, but they would feel more at home in the sea.
But since this is an opportunity, it’s not a bad idea to experience life on land, right?
“Master. Please listen to what I have to say.
You don’t give up easily, do you? But for someone like Ines, her storytelling is a bit too much. I think the original Ines would have developed her story a bit better, but I guess she doesn’t like it so much that she can’t afford it. But…
“I hate it. You just want to stop using your mother as a threat, don’t you? I’m not going to give up the trump card I just acquired. I won’t give it up.”
I don’t intend to use it casually, but some cards are effective just by having them. I’m often pushed around by Ines, so it’s a very important card for me.
“No one said that. I just wanted to suggest that since it’s been so long since we’ve met, we should talk about things again.”
Oh, Ines pulled back. She seemed to understand that she had been too hasty.
“This discussion is important, yes. When we have time, we should have a meeting with Felicia and the others to discuss the situation.”
The next time, she’ll take a chance and not be in a hurry, so I’ll have to be on my guard as well.
“I agree. Let’s discuss it thoroughly and carefully.”
Ines has the look of a predator stalking her prey.
I may have woken a sleeping child. Come back quickly, all of you.
