Chapter 23 – The End of the Adventure
We managed to trap the water giant’s core, and when Ilma-san, who was in full madness mode, tried to dismantle and analyze the core, the water magical creature lost its power and collapsed, breaking apart as if it were committing suicide. Also, the atmosphere seems to be one where the monsters will become active, so I’m a little worried about the exploration that will start tomorrow.
“Wow… it’s completely destroyed.”
No wonder the water magical creature is angry.
When I heard from Alessia-san, I imagined that only part of the royal palace had collapsed, but as far as the eye could see, it was just a pile of rubble.
Isn’t this a bit exaggerated?
I calmed down Ilma-san, who was drinking to forget her broken heart, and finally arrived on foot after being careful of the monsters in the dangerous area, which were gradually becoming more active. But the result of all this… to be honest, I’m a little taken aback.
It’s supposed to be a historical building.
“I know you had no choice but to fight, Alessia, but…”
“You shouldn’t overdo it.”
Maybe they agree with me, but Claretta and Carla look at Alessia-san with troubled expressions and admonish her.
“No, that’s not true. Before we ran away, the palace was in its original form. It’s only because of the water magic creature that went wild!”
Alessia-san, who is being looked at accusingly, panics and insists on her innocence.
When I looked at Marina-san and Ilma-san, who was riding with her, they nodded silently, so I guess it was true.
I see; it’s no wonder that the water magical creature’s transformation place was so big that we had to look up at it even from the luxury liner and that it’s just a pile of rubble now.
In any case, I should apologize for accusing her of something she didn’t do.
“What are we going to do now? It’s a complete pile of rubble, so should we explore the other buildings that are still standing?”
We all apologized for our doubts and tried to get back on track.
“Hmm, but leaving the royal palace to explore elsewhere…”
Alessia-san shows her disapproval of my suggestion.
I knew it wouldn’t work. I tried to make another suggestion because it seemed like it would involve physical labor, but of course, we couldn’t just leave the royal palace.
As a result of our discussion, we decided to excavate the royal palace with the strong support of Ilma-san, who said, “Valuable materials tend to gather around those in power!”
Excavating in the desert. It’s not exactly exciting, but it’s still hard work. There are even monsters…
***
It was still very hard.
Every day, in the scorching sun, we carried rubble to the rubber boat where I stored the pepper.
Everyone was able to demonstrate the power of heavy machinery at a high level, but it was still difficult to remove the rubble from the buildings of the royal palace.
Fighting against the sweltering heat and the monsters that gradually crept in when we forgot to be on guard, the days of looking forward to the end of work and a cold beer and a hot bath went on for more than ten days, and finally, the results of the excavation were about to appear before our eyes.
A section of the room was found to have retained its shape despite the collapse and fall, and upon examination, it was found to have been reinforced with magic. It is probably the same type of structure as the treasure room in the Duke’s Castle.
Hmm, if we could open the sealed door and see the glittering treasure… it would be amazing; I might even cry with emotion.
“How about it, Ilma-san?”
“Ufufu, it’s amazing. This must be the treasure room where the important items of the country were kept. The power of the magic is extraordinary. Even now, if you touch it carelessly, the trap will be activated. Marina, please lend me your power.”
Why is it so exciting that the trap is activated?
“Is it possible to deactivate it?”
“Don’t worry, we can always destroy it.”
I asked Ilma-san, but Marina-san gave me a direct answer.
Well, since Ilma-san is shaking her head behind Marina-san, it probably won’t be destroyed.
“We managed to disarm it. The trap won’t activate again, so there’s no need to destroy it.”
As I watched Ilma-san and Marina-san sweating bullets, Ilma-san announced that they had managed to deactivate the trap after about half an hour.
“All right, Wataru, you can open it now.”
And for some reason, Alessia-san gave me the task of opening the door.
“Huh? Why me? I think Alessia should open it. Or maybe Ilma and Marina, who disarmed it, would be more suitable.”
Opening the treasure room of a ruined country may be an honorable task, but for me, I’d rather be a spectator, looking in from the back and thinking, “Wow, this is amazing!”
“What are you talking about? It’s Wataru who hired us. The trap is disarmed, and Felicia’s barrier is on, so there’s nothing to worry about.
I wasn’t worried about that, but if I refuse here, I’m afraid I’ll be upgraded from coward to very coward.
“I understand.”
This is the time to show off. Not that it’s cool because I opened it, but it’s important to look good.
I stand in front of the door, put my hand on the handle and open it.
……It’s not what I expected.
I had imagined it to be a world out of the Arabian Nights, so I thought it would be all sparkly and shiny, but… the room is a mess as if it had been spilled by the impact of the fall.
It doesn’t look like a treasure room at all.
There are jars and jugs lying around. What’s going on here?
“Wataru, what do you think?”
Ilma-san peered into the room from behind me and, having apparently discovered something, pushed me aside and rushed into the room.
“This is amazing! This is where they kept the magic tools!”
The object Ilma-san is holding up in the air looks very familiar.
It’s about the size of a softball, but it looks a lot like the core of the water magical creature. Judging by Ilma-san’s delight, it must be the core.
It’s a mystery why she would be so happy to lift something that looks so much like a rampaging magical core, but it’s no wonder Ilma-san is so excited.
“This jar makes water when you put magic into it. And it’s quite efficient.”
“This jug is the same. I guess they kept the magic tools that produce water in such good condition because water is precious in the desert.”
While I was thinking, Marina-san and Dorothea-san also came into the room and examined the jars and jugs that had fallen.
Water? It seems that in the desert, magic tools like this are so valuable that they are kept separate from other treasures.
The same applies to us, who often live by the sea, but in our case, we have unlimited access to water.
It’s a little too subtle to be considered a treasure, and it doesn’t seem to make me cry.
“Wataru, I want you to summon the rubber boat so that we can store everything in it. Oh, Rimu-chan, don’t touch those parchments. They contain research on magic tools, so they’re very valuable.”
It seems that Rimu somehow managed to sneak into the treasure room and was playing around. I take Rimu and summon the rubber boat, leaving everything in Ilma-san’s hands.
It looks like she’s going to collect every last bit of it.
“So, is this the end of the exploration for the treasures of the royal palace?”
“Wataru, do you think the only treasure in the kingdom is the water magic tool?”
When I asked Alessia-san with a bit of hope, I got a question in return. So you mean we’re going to continue exploring?
It looks like we’ll be battling the desert heat for a while yet.
***
“From today on, we’ll mainly be exploring large buildings. The number of monsters is increasing, so be on the lookout!”
Alessia-san gives a rousing speech on the deck of the Hideaway.
The exploration of the royal palace ended two days after we discovered the room where the water-based magic tools were kept.
This was because we had discovered the literal treasure house where the treasure was kept. However, it was in pieces.
It seems that the water-based magic tools were more important to the country, and all the defenses of the treasure room where the treasure was kept were lost.
The royal palace collapsed with all its defenses lost.
The treasures had been crushed by the debris and the magical creature and were in a pitiful state. The ornaments, works of art, and coins that would have been of historical value were crushed, and the jewels were also broken.
However, the value of the precious metals as bars was not lost, so we could make a fortune.
We could have been satisfied with what we found and gone home, but we decided to explore the larger buildings just in case.
It’s hard to explore in the desert, but it’s even harder to leave the treasure behind.
Of course, I wanted to go home.
But if I’m the only one in a bad mood, the atmosphere will be bad, so I’m going to explore with all my might.
After repatriating the Hideaway, I walked through the royal capital, protected by everyone.
Our destination this time was a place with many large buildings facing a square that was a feeding ground for the water magical creature.
Some of the larger buildings have been destroyed by the movement of the water magical creature, but there is one building that remains intact, without a single scratch on it. This building is our main target today.
“Master, are you feeling well? You look pale.”
As we walked towards our destination, Ines noticed my unusual appearance and became worried.
“Yes, I think I’m okay, but maybe not.”
“Huh? What’s wrong with you? It’s not that hot yet, so it can’t be a heat stroke, can it?”
Ines is puzzled by my answer, but it’s also very difficult for me to express.
“How can I put it? I feel like I’m being called, but at the same time I have a really bad feeling… Does everyone else feel this way?”
I’m frustrated that I can’t accurately describe my current state, but as we get closer to our destination, the strange feeling gradually grows stronger.
“I’m the same as usual. How about everyone else?”
Alessia-san asks everyone, but everyone shakes their heads.
What is it? Am I the only one cursed?
“Marina, I’m sorry to ask you to do this, but I need you to go and scout the area. Be very careful.”
“Okay.”
Marina-san has agreed to do some preliminary reconnaissance. I’m sorry if I’m not feeling well right now, but it’s really helpful that she’s checking up on me.
“Ah, Marina’s back.”
I was waiting in the shade, being looked after by Claretta-san, when Marina-san returned. She didn’t seem injured or in a hurry, so maybe I misunderstood?
“I checked it out, but there was nothing strange about it. Besides, the building I was looking for was a church.”
…All the mysteries are solved.
All right, let’s pack up. The desert adventure is over.
