Chapter 6 – Air Conditioner!

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I thought I could handle it because I had gathered proper information beforehand and was at a high level, but the desert journey was grueling. Just when we reached an inconspicuous place far from the trade routes, I felt like my heart was about to break.

“Ship Summoning!”

When the drinking break was over and the second Panther was summoned, a body of a different color emerged from the magic circle.

The first one was white and conspicuous, but the second one was red and also very conspicuous.

It would be very conspicuous if we were driving around in the desert in such a flashy vehicle, but it would probably be okay because I would use the ship’s disguise to make it a less conspicuous color.

Well, it’s hot enough just sitting here, so let’s quickly divide ourselves into groups and get going.

As a result of the grouping, Marina-san and Carla-san were to join me, Ines and Felicia.

“Wataru. What is the name of this child?”

The grouping was over, and I was about to give the signal to leave, but before I could, Alessia-san asked me an unexpected question.

…Come to think of it, I’ve named all the vehicles I’ve had so far.

I didn’t think of names because it looks like a car, but since I named the Ranger and the Add, it seems natural that I would name the Panther.

Well, since it can actually run on water and can be purchased with Ship Summoning, there’s nothing wrong with thinking of it as a ship and giving it a name.

The name… name… Panther is too much, so… no, for some reason, I thought of the faces of three comedians.

Even better, I could buy a third car for each of them, but that won’t happen. It makes no sense to name a car after a comedian and a man’s last name.

Sankyuu No.1 and No.2… No.

By the way, I forget which country the Panther is from, but I think it was called Leopard in another country. This one seems to be easier to use for a name.

Leo reminds me of the king of animals, so I’ll go with Pard or even Pal.

I decided on the name Pal. The one I summoned first is Pal No. 1, and the one Alessia-san and the others are riding is Pal No. 2.

“Pal? That’s a cute sounding name, isn’t it?”

Alessia-san tilted her head, but I think Alessia-san was cuter than that.

“Well, let’s get started.”

Oh, I forgot to put on the ship’s disguise. I stop Alessia-san and the others from getting into Pal No. 2, and both Pal No. 1 and Pal No. 2 change their colors to a sandy color to match the desert.

The sound is out of control but will not be so noticeable from a distance.

When I get into Pal No. 1 and turn on the engine, a warm breeze comes out of the vents.

“Air conditioning!”

I had forgotten it existed, but the Pal No. 1 has air conditioning. I had never driven a convertible before, but I didn’t know that convertibles had air conditioning.

I was so happy that I operated the touch panel and turned the air conditioner on full blast.

“Wataru, it’s cool!”

“Yes, Marina, it’s cool!”

It took a while, but soon, a cool breeze blew out of the vents. Marina-san was in the passenger seat, and I squealed with delight.

The air conditioning is designed for convertibles, or maybe the airflow is stronger than expected, and the cool breeze reaches the back seat, causing Ines, Felicia, and Claretta to scream with delight.

Oops, I’ll have to teach Alessia-san and the others how to use the air conditioning. They know how to drive a car from the Ranger, but it’s hard for them to understand how to operate the air conditioner, isn’t it?

I’m going to go, but it’s kind of hard to get going. But the air conditioner is important, isn’t it?

***

“Then let’s go. Marina-san, will you check the direction?”

“Yes, leave it to me.”

I stepped on the accelerator of Pal No. 1 in time with Marina-san’s voice.

Oh well, we were finally ready to go.

The cool breeze from the air conditioner made Alessia-san and the others cheer. It was so far, so good, but then a battle broke out between the driver’s and passenger’s seats.

The wind could reach the back seat, but it was cooler in the front. Heat makes people crazy.

We had to deal with it by changing seats at every break, but it wasn’t too bad.

The Pal No. 1 group consisted of five people. That means if I’m in the middle when I get in the back seat, I’m in close contact with the beautiful women on either side, even if it’s a little uncomfortable. Too bad they’re wearing thick clothes, but it’s still a treat.

For once, I was grateful that everyone was interested in driving.

I stepped on the gas, and the car slowly began to move.

Maybe the sandy ground had more of an effect than I expected, but I felt a heavier foot than in the Ranger, which ran on dirt and had a bigger body.

Let’s drive safely.

Since the road is not even a road, the car bounces easily on the slightest bump, and the tires often get caught in the sand and slip. It is not a comfortable ride.

But….. It’s heaven!

Although the driving is nerve-wracking, the dust doesn’t fly thanks to the barriers that repel the sand.

The distance that used to make me sweaty and exhausted by the time I reached it, even if I walked as hard as I could, passes in the blink of an eye while riding the Pal.

Civilization is really wonderful. Driving in the desert is fun, too.

It requires caution, but there is a unique feeling of control, the engine’s roar as you climb the dunes, and the speed and thrill of going down them.

I am not the type of person who finds pleasure in driving, but it is like an attraction, and I think I will become addicted to it.

Honk!

Hmm? Is that the sound of a car horn? I look in the rearview mirror, but Pal No. 2 is following behind me.

Did I honk by mistake?

“Master behind!”

While I was thinking, I heard a sharp voice coming from Ines. I knew something was wrong.

I am afraid to look away from the front in this situation, but since it seems to be an emergency, I release the accelerator and look directly behind me.

There was no change in Pal No. 2, but a cloud of dust was rising behind it.

“Felicia, Marina, do you know what’s causing that cloud of dust?”

I asked the two who had good eyesight.

“Desert lizards are following us in groups.”

“Many of them are bigger than the lizards we knocked down on foot.”

That’s right, I forgot because driving in the desert was unexpectedly fun, but this was a world where monsters were common.

We were driving through such a world with our engines making loud noises, so of course, the monsters would chase us.

The armored scorpion and other desert monsters would probably have noticed us, but we probably left all of them behind except for the desert lizard because of our speed.

“Should we stop and hunt them down?”

If the ground was dirt, we could pull away even if they were chasing us, but it would be difficult to pull away when we were in the desert, and we had to be careful not to fall over.

A desert lizard is a desert lizard, no matter how big it is, and with the abilities of these members and the Ship Summoning barriers, it will be taken care of easily.

However, I have a feeling that even if we get rid of them, the monsters will gather as soon as we start running. That’s the way it is at sea, and lately, when we don’t have the mood or reason to kill them, we leave them behind because there’s no end to it.

I ask Marina-san in the passenger seat what’s going on. As a scout, she should be able to assess the situation better than I am.

“…It’s not hard to beat them, so I’d say it’s okay to leave them like this until it’s time for a break, but it would be inconvenient if there was an accident or we got separated from Pal No. 2, so I think it’s better to beat them more often.”

I see, I hadn’t thought about accidents and getting separated. It would be troublesome to deal with a large number of desert lizards when that happens, and we should kill them while we can afford it. It was a good learning experience.

“Understood. Then let’s stop at a place where it would be easy to fight and handle them. Marina, please choose a place to fight. Also, everyone should prepare for battle.”

“Understood. It is difficult to fight at the bottom of the slope or in the middle of the dune, so go to the top of the dune. And Claretta, give the signal to Alessia and the others.”

“Okay.”

While everyone prepared for battle, I followed Marina-san’s instructions and headed for the top of the dune.

I was surprised that there was such a thing as a battle signal. I had been with them for a long time, but I didn’t know that.

Well, I was hardly involved in the battle, so it was only natural.

“We’re going to take care of that group, right?”

When we arrived at the top of the dune and stopped the car, Pal No. 2 also stopped next to us, and Ilma-san, who was sitting in the passenger seat of Pal No. 2, spoke to us.

I nodded my head in agreement, and Alessia-san began to prepare for the battle by giving us instructions as well.

Her instructions to me were… to stay in the driver’s seat and wait quietly. If there’s time, she said, I can join the attack with Rimu.

Hmm… I guess a group of desert lizards is nothing to worry about for Alessia-san and the others. They seem to be concentrating on the battle but still seem somewhat relaxed.

Meanwhile, a cloud of sand arrives at the bottom of the dune and rushes up.

I know it is safe, but it is usually scary to see a large group of huge lizards approaching with a ferocious roar and the sound of their footsteps.

As I was thinking this, part of the group suddenly exploded. It seemed that Ilma-san had cast a spell.

The desert lizard was so pathetic that I felt sorry for it.

“…Rimu too…”

“Oh, Rimu wants to do it too… Yeah, okay, good luck.”

For a moment, I felt sorry for the desert lizards that were being overkill, but if Rimu wants to do it, there’s nothing to be done.

Rimu fired the light spear he learned from Claretta-san in rapid succession. The desert lizard shattered into pieces.

***

The group of desert lizards, which should have been a large group, was wiped out at a distance without a single one of them coming close.

What was the meaning of the barrier?

When I thought about it, the battle ended with time to spare, but this is where the hell began.

“Wataru, the materials are a mess, but we can recover the proof of subjugation and the magic stone. Please help with the work.”

Alessia-san, I understand that you want my help because of the large group, but are you serious? It’s scorching hot out there.

“Um, why don’t we just give up?”

I don’t want to leave the cool cabin.

“Low-ranked magic stones are easy to exchange for money. We don’t have any money on this continent, do we? ”

“Y-You’re right. I’ll do my best.”

I couldn’t resist Alessia-san’s words. It is hard to have so little money when you are not supposed to be poor.

…It’s to buy the dancer’s clothes, I believe, and I’ll do my best as well.

Author Note:

Regarding the Panther, I didn’t even know if it was equipped with an air conditioner, so I am writing this from my imagination. I apologize if my description was off the mark.
