Chapter 6 – The Mermaid Kingdom Market
After entering the castle in the Mermaid Kingdom, the lucky pervert god died, but we were able to finish the dinner party hosted by Her Majesty the Queen without incident. Well, I think we only talked about magical girls at the dinner party, but since I came up with the idea for the trade goods, the dinner party wasn’t so bad… I guess.
“Good morning, Master.”
Felicia’s voice woke me.
…Huh? I feel really strange… a tail fin! Oh, that’s right, I’ve been sleeping underwater.
“Felicia, good morning. And where’s Ines?”
Felicia silently points to the corner of the room.
Ines is sleeping against the wall. What was all that confidence last night?
“By the way, where are Rimu and Pent?”
Felicia points to the mermaid chair. Wow, that’s so cute.
Pent is curled up in a ball, and Rimu is sleeping on top of him, with Pent’s face gently resting on top of him. It’s just too cute. Most of all, the sight of them getting along is precious. Well, they’ve been getting along for a while now.
They’re so cute; let’s leave them alone until breakfast. I’ll wake Ines up.
“Hmm… Oh, Master, is it morning already?”
What do you mean by it’s morning already? Please don’t make it difficult for me in the morning with your sexy looks.
“Ines, look around you.”
“Around me? … The walls.”
“Yes, the walls.”
“Good morning, Master.”
Ines behaved as if nothing had happened. I’m a little envious of her nerve. When Felicia saw that Ines was still half asleep, she started taking care of her. That was really helpful.
Now, about breakfast… I think they’ll bring it to our rooms, but Her Majesty apologized, saying that she would like to have breakfast with us. Since I couldn’t settle down, it would be better if we had breakfast separately.
We each finish breakfast in our own rooms and then meet with everyone else.
“Wataru, what are you going to do today? Are you going into town?”
Marina-san asks me about my plans for the day.
“I want to have a quick meeting before I go into town. Please wait a moment.”
I’m definitely going to go sightseeing in the lively city of Mermaid, but I want to discuss an idea I had last night with Camille-san. Right, it’s about tomatoes.
“I see, so you want to introduce a new taste to the Mermaid Kingdom and make it a specialty of the Beastman City, is that it…?”
Camille-san makes a difficult face.
“Wataru-san, that’s not something you can do right away, is it?”
“Yes, I think I’ll wait until Beastman City is more or less in order. I wouldn’t ask you to do it right away under the current circumstances.”
“I am sorry. There are a lot of important people who want to implement their own ideas right away, so I was a little cautious.”
I see, I thought she was making a hard face, but it was a look of caution. I can understand that caution, though, because I have an image of nobles being unreasonable.
“Camille-san, I don’t want to be lumped in with those selfish nobles, do you understand?”
I generally try to avoid getting involved in things, but I still don’t want to be associated with those stereotypical selfish nobles.
“I’m sorry, but even those selfish nobles wouldn’t just decide to build a huge city on a whim, would they?”
I was hit with a counter-argument that left me speechless. But in my case, it’s feasible, so I want to argue that I’m not selfish.
Well, I’m not going to argue because I’ve already lost control, and I’ve come to Camille-san and the others for help.
“So what do you think of tomatoes?”
“I had dinner and breakfast, and it was a bit monotonous. However, I think there is a lot of potential in dishes that solidify soup-like ingredients.”
“In addition to tomatoes, I think the chicken soup that Wataru-san taught me would be something the mermaids would enjoy.”
Chicken soup jelly… I’ve heard of something like that.
And since we were talking about cooking, Claretta-san joined the discussion. I often see her studying from cookbooks on luxury liners, so she really loves to cook.
Still, chicken bones… It may be new to the mermaids who live in the sea, but it’s not easy to make chicken bone broth.
If I don’t supply them directly, the broth will be on land. But if we can raise chickens, the beastmen’s diet will be richer, right?
The problem is food and water, but assuming we can get water through the waterways, as for food… I can think of a few foods that might grow in the wasteland, but I think feeding the beastmen should take priority over feeding the chickens.
Well, tomatoes are food, too, but I still want chickens. Being able to secure meat and eggs is a big deal.
Corn, millet, and foxtail millet can be used as both food and chicken feed, but I think millet grows in watery places, and corn also needs a lot of water.
“I see. I’ve had chicken soup before, and it was delicious. If we could get the ingredients to solidify the soup from the Mermaid Kingdom, and then sell the tomato soup and chicken soup to the mermaids… No, we could manage with the tomatoes if we had time, but with the chicken…”
“Camille-san, do you know the millet plant?”
Millet is a plant that grows best in hot, dry places, so if it exists, it should be possible to grow it near the Beastmen City. The question is whether millet exists or not, but it seems likely that it would exist if we could communicate.
“Millet? Millet isn’t very popular, but it’s food for the poor… I see; millet might be a good food for the City of Beastmen. If we have time, we could also use it as chicken feed. It’s not something we can start right away, but it should be possible to include it in our future plans.
The fact that there is millet is good news. But it won’t be possible right away, will it? Well, it’s difficult to settle down until the situation is stable, not to mention the fact that the houses are temporary.
But it’s great that we’ve come up with some ideas that could help maintain Beastman City. It’s important to shake things up from time to time.
“Then please continue the discussion in that direction, even if it’s not possible right away.”
“Understood.”
I almost said that she should consult with the person in charge. If I had said that, I’m sure the person in charge would have said that I was the one in charge.
Well, the Toyomi Trading Company is more of a successor to the government than a person in charge, and William-san and the others are architects.
I don’t want to take on any responsibility or work, so I think it’s time to decide on a representative for the Beastmen.
There are so many of them, so there must be someone who can take charge.
Well, now that the difficult conversation is over, it’s time to have a look around Mermaid City.
***
Two soldiers were assigned to protect us. It seems that the nobles also wanted to come with us, but I was quite relieved to hear that they had to go to work.
The soldiers were assigned to protect us, not because we were in danger, but because they would be able to help us when we were surrounded by the mermaids. We were like idols.
“Where would you like to go first, Wataru-sama?”
I don’t know the tourist spots in the Mermaid Kingdom, but if I’m going to show Camille-san around, I guess there’s only one choice.
“Please take me to the market.”
The escort mermaids nodded and started swimming ahead of us. Mermaids really do swim gracefully, don’t they? Except that the escort mermaids are male.
I wanted to be gracefully led by a beautiful soldier mermaid of the gallant type.
While thinking of silly things, I urged Camille-san, who was confused, to follow me.
“It’s a strange feeling to swim around in the city. Well, I’ve swum in castles and slept in water before, so it’s nothing new…”
Camille-san also decided to sleep underwater? I knew that, but she’s got a strong sense of curiosity.
“Camille, were you able to wake up properly on the bed?”
“Yes, I floated a little, but I was on the bed, right?”
“…I see.”
Camille-san answers Ines’ question honestly, although she wonders what she’s being asked. Ines looks disappointed. She looks sad because she can’t find a companion who sleeps badly.
But I see… Camille-san is the type who sleeps well. I don’t know what that’s good for, but I think I’ll remember it.
Oh, I can see the market now.
“…Whoa!”
Camille-san lets out a cute voice at the unique market that makes use of the fact that it is underwater.
We knew about it from the festival, but it is natural to be surprised at the sight of shops and stalls floating in the water.
We are the first visitors to observe the scene. Well, it’s clear that Carla-san’s attention is drawn to the food stalls and Claretta-san’s to the shops selling ingredients.
Still, it’s a little strange to see live fish being sold in baskets like that, isn’t it? What about the water pressure…?
The store in front of us sells fish by tying them up with rope-like seaweed and letting them swim around.
Camille-san, who seemed very interested in this unfamiliar scene, dragged us along and began to carefully check the products in each stall.
I think she was doing serious market research because it was important for trading goods and advising Princess Adalicia, with whom she had become friends.
Seeing her like this makes me want to praise myself for recruiting Camille-san.
I think it’s especially wonderful that I can leave the difficult parts of the business to Camille-san and trust her with everything without worrying about it going wrong.
We swim through the market, watching the mermaids go about their business.
Thanks to the sacred treasure, I think we’re swimming smoothly, but it’s still a bit awkward compared to the mermaids.
Even so, Pent, the sea serpent, shows a swimming style that’s not inferior to the mermaids’, and Rimu swims at speed like a bullet—no, he swims explosively.
It’s strange how he can reach such a speed despite his soft, round form. Is he overcoming the resistance of the water with his strength? Even the mermaids around him are surprised.
Oh, it’s a shrimp. It’s the perfect size for tempura, and it looks like a tempura festival on a houseboat would be fun.
The houseboat I bought is famous for its monjayaki, but it also has all the equipment for making tempura. So if I throw in the fresh seafood I got in the Mermaid Kingdom… it’s a deal.
Let’s buy as much seafood as we can that can be used for tempura.
I like shrimp, squid, chicken, and white fish tempura, but I can’t give up on goby, either. For vegetables, there was pumpkin, lotus root, onion, and red pickled ginger. I’m getting hungry.
