Chapter 1048: Minor Death
Chapter 1048: Minor Death
The Overseer considered her options for a while. Naturally, handing the position to Fierce Breaker was the best option. There was no danger.
Yet, Fierce Breaker's words rang in her mind. Whoever this Swamp Dragon was, he had predicted almost everything. What if this was also part of the plan?
What if Fierce Breaker had a way to contact someone from the Supreme World?
That didn't matter. It would take a while to establish a connection. Even if he gave permission to enter, the time it took for them to arrive still had to be measured in seconds.
It seemed to be a safe bet, and yet...
It didn't feel like a safe bet.
It felt risky.
She would have no issues with handing her position to one of the humanoid Demons. Some of them also counted as humans. Sadly, she had killed all of them. Fierce Breaker was the only option.
She could also hand the position to a new Ascender and kill them right afterward. That would be even safer.
But then, the Overseer realized something.Back then, she had received the position by forcing the old Overseer to hand the position to her. She hadn't killed the old Overseer to get the position. Back then, the old Overseer had believed that she was fully human. They hadn't realized that she was a beast.
When she had become Immortal, the old Overseer had believed that she would ascend soon. They liked their job, and they didn't want to get rid of it. But then, the new Overseer hadn't ascended. This had confused the old Overseer, and they had decided to meet her.
That was when the new Overseer had attacked them. Her true power had been far greater than what she had shown up to this point. If the Overseer had been prepared, they could have fled to the Elemental Dimension, but the powerful attack had come out of nowhere.
Crossing Dimensions wasn't instantaneous. It needed some time, and that was more than enough time for the new Overseer to kill the old one.
So, the old Overseer handed their position to the new one, and the new one killed the old one before they could ascend.
As the Overseer remembered that situation, she realized a possible danger.
There might be a chance that she wouldn't get the offer if she killed Fierce Breaker. What if she could only get the position if someone offered it to her?
In fact, what if someone could only become the Overseer once? In that case, the position would stay vacant until the world had repaired the Ascension Pools and a new Ascender appeared. Sure, one of them would hand the position back, but that was risky.
After all, the world didn't inherently stop Lords and Demigods from entering. She always had to deny entry. If there were no Overseer, there would be no one who could deny entry.
These were all risks.
She deliberated her choice for a long time. If she wanted to be sure, she needed to hand her position over. However, before she went through with all of these risks, she decided to do something else first. The chances of success were low, but it might still work.
In the next moment, she focused on the Elemental Dimension.
While this was going on, Kyle and Sebastian were looking at a black ball in Kyle's hand.
"Still crazy that you only needed five years," Sebastian commented with a shake of his head. "I mean, you didn't even look at the world."
"It's Karma," Kyle answered as he looked at the black ball in his hands.
The black ball in Kyle's hands felt wrong. It felt like it wasn't supposed to exist.
"You've actually comprehended the Minor Law of Death," Sebastian repeated for the tenth time. "You're sure this black ball isn't Death?"
"No, it's not Death," Kyle said with annoyance. "I've seen actual Death. This is very similar, but it's not actual Death. This just has some of its attributes. Look!"
Kyle pushed some Energy into the black ball. The only thing that happened was that the color became lighter.
"If this were Death, we would be dead," Kyle said. "I would have shoved a bunch of Energy into a bunch of Death. That would have created Brutality, and we would no longer be here. But we're still here. Therefore, this isn't Death."
"Then, what is it?" Sebastian asked.
"It's Energy that mimics Death," Kyle said. "It can eat other Energy. It can enter my attacks and strengthen them. It attacks on a different layer when compared to other Energy. It can even split Neutral Energy into its components like actual Death."
"But it can't generate Brutality. It's useful in so many ways, but it simply isn't Death."
"It's like my Elemental when it looks like a Demon. It has the power of a Demon. It looks like a Demon. But deep inside, it's not a Demon," Kyle explained.
"So, it's just Energy that looks like Death," Sebastian commented.
"Correct," Kyle answered.
Sebastian scratched the back of his head. "So, what's it good for?"
"Didn't you listen?" Kyle asked. "I've already told you."
"Yeah, I remember, but how useful is it exactly?" Sebastian asked.
"Well, the speed at which I can comprehend Laws should increase. Additionally, I can add it to my attacks. It might increase the power of my attacks by half a level. A Complex Level Five Law might have the power of a Level 5.5 Law."
Sebastian's eyes widened. "That's crazy! Can you combine it with other Laws?"
"No," Kyle answered. "It's separate. It's representing the antithesis of Energy. If I were to fuse it with Energy-based Laws, it wouldn't represent the antithesis anymore. It's better to keep it separate."
"That's still insane," Sebastian said. "Imagine- wait."
Sebastian and Kyle focused on the outside world as they noticed a change.
Just now, something about the Elemental Dimension had changed.
They didn't know what it was, but something felt different.
Then, in the next moments, something else happened.
Waves of Elementals were rushing towards the west!
Not all of the Elementals were traveling towards the west, but a majority of them did.
"The Barrier Formation Array," Kyle said in realization. "Its call has become much stronger and louder! It's attracting far more Elementals!"
"Why?" Sebastian asked. "Did something happen?"
"I have no idea, but we have to be careful. I don't think there's anything we can do to change things, but we should still focus on remaining hidden," Kyle said.
Kyle's Elemental shot towards the closest Level Five Law Well and killed the Elemental inside of it. It seemed like the dense Elemental Energies of powerful Law Wells were more attractive than the call of the Barrier Formation Array. As long as Kyle stayed here, he wouldn't arouse any suspicion.
Meanwhile, countless Elementals were rushing into the Barrier Formation Array. The Formation Array received an abundant load of Energy, but instead of strengthening itself, it forwarded the Energy to a different Formation Array.
This was the Formation Array that suppressed the Primordial Forces. Except, it had been changed. Instead of suppressing the Laws, it messed with their attributes.
Space and gravity compressed and intensified around the Ascension Pools. The violent forces would kill any Ascender before they could materialize in the world.
This would stop any kind of life from appearing in Auyvar.
However, messing with the Primordial Forces like this cost an unreasonable amount of Energy. It cost more Energy than the Elemental Dimension could produce.
Luckily, the Elemental Dimension had a lot of Energy saved up in the form of Elementals.
At most, it would take five years until the Elemental Dimension couldn't deliver enough Elementals anymore.
The Overseer didn't think that she would be able to comprehend the Minor Law of Death within these five years, but it was worth a shot.
If she failed, she would have no choice but to hand her position to the next Ascender and hope that they would hand it back.
