Chapter 1073: Delusional
Chapter 1073: Delusional
The Overseer stepped towards the Gate of Death. There was no hint of hesitation within her entire existence.
She would enter!
This was her one shot!
Her one shot to escape on her own terms!
It was almost impossible to survive, but it wasn't completely impossible!
She would succeed!
She knew that she would succeed!
Her future...
Her future was here!
"I wouldn't do that if I were you."The Overseer's eyes widened in shock as she heard a voice in her mind. Her Divine Consciousness was constantly active, but she couldn't sense the owner of the voice!
That was when she noticed a shadow floating towards the right. Just now, the shadow had been in front of the Gate of Death. Its color had been identical to the color of the Gate of Death, which was why she hadn't seen it until it had moved to the side.
For just a moment, she looked at the shadow in confusion.
What... was this?!
Just like the Gate of Death, she could see it with her eyes, but she couldn't sense it with her Divine Consciousness.
The shadow was... strange. It looked like a two-dimensional projection on a three-dimensional plane.
"I... who are you?" the Overseer asked, still shocked.
"A guy," the shadow answered.
Silence.
"A guy?" the Overseer repeated in confusion.
"Yep, just a random guy," the shadow answered. "I appear... occasionally."
"Are you the reason why nobody can enter the Gate of Death?" the Overseer asked, her eyes narrowing.
If this thing decided to stand between her and her freedom, she would do everything in her power to get rid of it, even if she had to die!
She refused to be bound any longer!
"Kinda," the shadow said. "Usually, I just destroy the Gates of Death when they appear, but that's not the case this time."
"You can destroy it?" the Overseer asked.
"Yeah, it's not difficult. A good kick is enough," the shadow said, its two-dimensional form shrugging.
The Overseer narrowed her eyes and gathered Elemental Energies in her hands. "You will not destroy this one! I refuse to let anyone stand between me and my freedom!"
"I've already told you that I'm not destroying this one," the shadow said with annoyance. "If you want to enter, you can enter. I can still destroy it when you're done dying."
The Overseer's narrowed eyes remained, but the Elemental Energies around her vanished. "You think I'm going to die?"
"Yep."
Silence.
"What makes you so sure?" the Overseer asked.
"You don't have the right setup," the shadow answered.
"The right setup?" she asked with furrowed brows.
"You are one," the shadow said. "The Major Law of Death takes one. When you lose your one, you are zero. It's that simple. There used to be a way where you only needed to pay half, but I don't want to micromanage someone's life."
The shadow's words confused the Overseer. In a way, they made sense, but they also didn't make sense.
The shadow's words sowed hesitation, but the Overseer's conviction still won out.
"It doesn't matter," she said. "So what if it's impossible? I'd rather try the impossible than to remain in this situation any longer!"
"Liar," the shadow said.
Rage rose in the Overseer's heart, but then she saw the shadow pointing towards the east.
"If that were the truth, I wouldn't be here," the shadow said. "You can try to use your cheap imitation of Death to get rid of the World Wall. Why aren't you doing that? Your chances of success are infinitely higher this way."
"That's different!" the Overseer shouted.
"How is that different?" the shadow asked. "Two ways out. One has a chance of success. The other one doesn't. You say you're willing to fight the impossible, but you're not even willing to fight the slightly possible."
The shadow scratched his chin. "Actually, you didn't technically lie. You did say you were willing to fight the impossible."
The shadow shrugged. "It's just weird that you're willfully choosing certain death over very probable death. Oh well, guess you don't even know what you want."
"I know what I want!" the Overseer shouted. "I want to get out of here, and the Gate of Death is my best shot at getting out!"
"But it literally isn't," the shadow said. "You have like four better ways to escape."
"I don't believe you," the Overseer said with a snort.
"One, use your False Death on the World Wall. You will almost definitely die, but the chances are not absolute zero."
"Two, wait for someone from that weird death cult to arrive and give them the position. They will destroy the world and take you with them. You even have the Minor Law of Death. They would probably love to recruit you."
"Three, stop killing people and build some positive rapport with the people in charge. Choose a side and tell new Immortals to join that side. You have given that side something, and they are more likely to support you when the time comes. You are handing them an entire world. That's worth a lot."
"Four, literally just wait. At some point, these two stubborn dickheads will realize that they're in an unwinnable fight. One guy tries to exhaust the other guy, but the other guy has literally infinite stamina. Sure, he could kill the other guy, but that is not going to happen. This Cosmos is not a resource they can use. Eventually, they will stop fighting, and if you've been a good girl, the owner might promote you to human."
"Not sure though. The owner is a huge prick. Just the way he designed the Cosmos rubs me the wrong way. He reminds me of my heaven. He's just... shittier. Like, if you don't want to have kids, you don't need to have kids, but the people here don't even have a choice."
Half of the things the Overseer heard enraged her, while the other half confused her.
"Back to the topic, why aren't you using any of these methods?" the shadow asked.
"One, using False Death on the World Wall is suicide," the Overseer shouted. "Two, I refuse to put my life in the hands of others! Doing that means accepting that I'm helpless and weak! Three, the same as two! Four, the same as two!"
The shadow snorted. "You're delusional. You choose killing yourself over committing suicide. How did you comprehend so many Laws while being so blind?"
"I'm not blind!" the Overseer shouted. "I am certain that the Gate of Death has a higher chance of success than any of your other methods! My senses and my experiences have the highest accuracy! Nothing that anyone else says can overshadow the knowledge I've been granted by listening to my senses!"
The shadow remained silent for a moment.
"Wow, I mean, I knew that you were like this, but it's still surprising," the shadow said. "It's like, imagine you can see things clearly, and you understand everything. Then, this guy appears, and you explain everything with perfect clarity, and he still refuses to listen."
"Kinda crazy, but that's freedom for you."
