Chapter 1139: True Love

Sebastian and Melanie sat together on a tall building, watching the city. This city used to be their home, but it had changed so much. They had been gone for a long time, and the city had changed hands several times already. Many of the people living in this city probably still belonged to their lineage, but at this point, it was impossible to tell. They no longer knew whose ancestors had been part of their family.

They didn't know for how long they'd been sitting here. They only knew that it had been years. For years, they had just been sitting here, enjoying each other's company.

"Alright," Melanie suddenly said, standing up. "Don't you think it's about time?"

Sebastian just smiled at her. "Can't we have a bit more time?"

"Can we?" Melanie asked, a hint of reproach in her voice. "Your aura is already showing signs of instability. If you wait any longer, you might not be able to finish your Refined Law anymore. When you approach natural death, your focus wanes."

"I can manage," Sebastian said. "Trust me, I can manage."

"Honey, I trust you, but I don't believe you," Melanie answered. "Remember what I've said. I don't want you to just give up. I want your life to continue. You have an eternity in front of you."

Sebastian's face fell, and he avoided looking at Melanie.

"I just want to spend more time with you," he said quietly. "Our time together has been so short."

"And it will always feel short," Melanie answered, putting her hand on Sebastian's shoulder. "When good things end, they always feel like they've only lasted for a short time. When bad things end, it feels like they've lasted for an eternity."

"We've spent over half a million years together. What would the Mortals think if they heard that you only got to spend 500,000 years with your wife? What if we spend five million years together? It would feel just as short."

Sebastian sighed when he heard Melanie's words. "I know... it's just..."

"It's hard."

"You think this is any easier for me?" Melanie asked. "I also don't want to lose you! I want to stay with you forever! I don't want to die, and I don't want you to feel the pain of losing me, but we don't have a choice. Even if you're Immortal, death comes for you eventually. It's just that you won't die a peaceful death. Eventually, someone will kill you."

Even though Melanie's words seemed rather dark and gloomy, they gave Sebastian some comfort. Sebastian knew that he was about to face one of the darkest periods in his life. Usually, words about one's inevitable end made one's life feel less colorful and a bit more pointless, but when one was facing a bad situation, they could give comfort.

Good things came to an end, and so did bad things.

Sebastian sighed and stood up, and then the two of them just looked at each other.

Neither of them knew how to say goodbye. How could they wrap up their shared lives with just a couple of words?

Should they hug each other? Should they kiss? Should they just leave?

Nothing felt appropriate. None of them could think of a way to say goodbye that wouldn't make the parting feel hollow and incomplete.

Sebastian leaned forward and hugged Melanie.

"I love you," he said.

Melanie also hugged Sebastian, and for the first time in a long time, she dared to cry in front of Sebastian. Her tears made her feel ashamed and weak. She knew that Sebastian would feel pain when he saw her tears, and she didn't want him to feel pain. Melanie took great pride in her mental strength, and when she couldn't contain her tears any longer, she felt like she had failed Sebastian.

"Sorry," Melanie said with an awkward voice as she tried to suppress her tears.

"I'm the one who should be sorry," Sebastian answered softly. "I know that you're always trying to be strong for me. You've thought about my pain for so long that you're not allowing yourself to feel your own pain anymore."

Some tears rolled down Sebastian's face. "What's so bad about crying? If any situation is worth shedding some tears, it's this one."

Melanie's embrace became tighter as more tears streamed down her face.

"I... I... I don't want you to leave," she stuttered. "I don't want this to end. I don't want to lose you. I want to stay with you."

"Then, come with us," Sebastian whispered. "You can come with us, and we can-"

"No!" Melanie shouted. She wanted to push Sebastian away, but she also didn't want to lose him. "We've talked about this. I told you why I don't want to come with you."

"But then, why-"

"Honey," Melanie said, interrupting Sebastian. "Sometimes, when people tell you about their problems, they're not searching for solutions. Sometimes, people just want to vent."

Sebastian took a deep breath. "I understand. I won't ask you to come with me."

Naturally, they'd talked about this. Theoretically, Kyle could take Melanie with him to the Supreme World. Sadly, that wouldn't accomplish much.

Sebastian needed to become an Immortal, and Immortals were supposed to be in the Immortal Dimension. If Melanie were there, Sebastian would need to stay in the Main Dimension, and if any other Immortal found him there, he would most likely die. Pulling Melanie into the Immortal Dimension was technically possible, but any kind of shockwave or battle might kill her. Even more, Sebastian would need to defend her the entire time.

And in the end, Melanie would still die. It would just be about 250,000 years later.

Melanie didn't want to endanger Sebastian's future just for a bit more time with him.

Some people said that love was a selfish desire. They said that grief was the pain one felt when one lost something. They said that love was like taking possession of someone else's life.

Yet, most of the people who said these things had never truly loved.

Love was prioritizing the other person above oneself.

Love was sacrificing one's own happiness for one's partner.

And true love only worked when both parties felt like this. Sincerity had to be reciprocated with sincerity. Love had to be reciprocated with love.

Only when both sides prioritized the other side's happiness above their own could true love flourish.

Sebastian and Melanie had found true love.

Melanie knew that she couldn't be with Sebastian forever, and even though she wanted nothing more than to stay with him for longer, she put his future above her wishes.

Sebastian knew what Melanie felt and what she wanted. He wanted to abandon his path so that she could enter death with him by her side. However, he also knew that Melanie wouldn't want him to endanger his future even more.

Sebastian knew what he had to do. Sometimes, the best way to make one's partner happy was to prioritize oneself.

Sebastian didn't want to leave, but he knew that he had to.
