Chapter 1185: Requirements

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

'What?' Kyle thought as Black looked at his Communicator, which was currently telling him that he only had a week left to complete the first task.

'I completely lost track of time!' Kyle thought. 'I've been trying to understand this weird Formation Array for just a moment, but almost an entire year has passed!'

Black looked at the Formation Array with furrowed brows.

'I'm not done looking at it, but I guess I have to go do the next task.'

Kyle activated his Communicator and told it that he was ready for his evaluation. Moments later, the Communicator said that the evaluation was in progress.

DING!

'Task one complete,' Kyle read. 'Guess they don't need to come here personally to check out the Formation Array.'

The Communicator unlocked the file for the second task and gave Kyle access to the next Space Ring. However, he decided to look at the Formation Array for some more time.

'I'm pretty sure that this way of creating Formation Arrays doesn't originate from this Cosmos. Most likely, this technique comes from that other Cosmos. The way this Formation Array is designed is so unnatural that it couldn't have originated from here. In a way, this Formation Array feels more like it's a product of evolution than engineering. It's like it naturally grew to this state instead of being designed.'

'In just a couple of hours, I already found like 1,500 parts that can be improved to make the Formation Array more efficient since there are many unnecessary parts in its design. However, I need to infuse it with Laws to make it work. The earlier design doesn't need any Laws. I guess if you don't have access to Laws, this is the only way to create powerful Formation Arrays.'

'I'm pretty sure that the normal Formation Arrays are strictly better than these weird Formation Arrays, but that doesn't mean that they're useless. As long as you manage to get it working once, you can analyze the result and make changes. It's like breeding an animal to fulfill a certain purpose and then looking at the animal before recreating it as an efficient machine or just adding mechanical parts to it.'

'If I can learn how to make these designs, I could find new Formation Arrays just by trial and error. Might help with research, but I think that's about it. These Formation Arrays don't need Laws, but I have Laws. Their one strength is irrelevant to me while their weaknesses remain.'

'Anyway, let's get to the second task,' Kyle thought as his Avatars looked at the requirements of the second task.

'Oh! That's not too hard,' Kyle thought after reading through the requirements.

The requirements were to create a small part of a complicated set of Formation Arrays that would create an advanced artificial Law Well for Immortal Fire.

Natural Law Wells were essentially just self-sustaining transformation cycles of Energy that revolved around a Law. For example, an Immortal Fire Law Well created several tiny flames that mimicked life, which combined into greater flames to create something like a multi-celled organism but with fire. The fires had such a high Energy Density that they pulled in enough Energy to refill the Energy they were using to stay alive.

Simple Artificial Law Wells created these same effects with the help of Formation Arrays and Energy Sources.

Complex Artificial Law Wells were much harder to create and maintain. These Law Wells showed different aspects of the Law separately. These Law Wells had individual displays, allowing Seekers to look at specific parts of the Law without having to filter out unnecessary background noise.

The second task was about creating one of these displays.

'That's pretty fucking easy,' Kyle thought. 'I already know the Law of Immortal Fire. I know how I have to manipulate my Energy to create this specific effect. As long as I find a setup of components that manipulate the Energy in the same way, I will pass. I already know the result. I just gotta show how to get there.'

'The size requirement is a bit tight, though. They really want this Formation Array to be small. All of the other requirements are pretty lax. I wonder if this will become a recurring thing from now on. All of the individual requirements of a Formation Array have an impact on its overall quality. A smaller Formation Array needs fewer materials and is easier to keep stable. Higher Energy Efficiency makes it cheaper. More power output makes it better. Lower complexity makes it easier to set up and maintain. Having fewer infused Laws allows more people to work on the Formation Array.'

'I have to remember that this is a Screening but also a form of training. I presume the tasks will be like the individual Realms. Each task will probably focus on a different requirement. Only if someone can fulfill all of them to a satisfactory level will they be accepted into the FAD.'

All three of Kyle's Avatars scratched the back of their heads. 'Maybe I should follow their suggestion. During the first task, I made like 15 different Formation Arrays that fulfilled all of the requirements. From now on, I think I should push their requirements to the limit.'

'You want me to make a small Formation Array? Sure! I'll make this Formation Array small. Then, I'll make it smaller, and smaller, and smaller. I'll make it fucking tiny! I'll make a Law Well Display for ants!'

Kyle didn't even look at the Space Ring with all of the materials. Since he was going to make his own Formation Arrays, he would use his own materials. So what if he wasted a couple of them? Since he knew all of Elemental Laws up to Level Seven, he had a very high efficiency when it came to recycling his materials. Fusing materials required certain insights, but defusing them often required different insights. It was like fusing O2 with C to make CO2 and then splitting CO2 into O2 and C. Both processes were completely different, which was why most Formation Array Masters burned through materials while experimenting.

Grey fused a bunch of materials. White experimented with the materials. Black designed the Formation Array.

Within an hour, Kyle had created a working Formation Array, but it was too big.

The three Avatars kept doing their things, and some hours later, Kyle managed to reduce the size of the Formation Array without compromising its output.

After three weeks of experimentation, Kyle managed to create a Formation Array that fulfilled all of the requirements.

The reason it only took him three weeks was that he already knew the Law of Immortal Fire. If someone who didn't know that Law tried to design such a Formation Array, they would need many years.

Kyle continued refining his Formation Array, making it smaller and smaller.

After ten years, the Formation Array had shrunken by 50%.

After a total of a hundred years, the improvements slowed. Everything was already packed so tightly that it couldn't compress anymore without interfering with the Energy Waves.

'This design has reached its limit,' Kyle thought, 'but I've learned a lot. If I redesign it, I think I can make one that can be compressed even further.'

'Let's get to it!'
