Chapter 1024: Truth of First Elder’s Betrayal

“This Young Master, are you going to the forest to hunt? Hire my carriage for the journey, I’ll only charge 20 Copper Coins.”

“20 Coppers, huh? Do you think the Young Master is stupid? Come Young Master, I’ll only charge 15 Coppers and my carriage is better than his.”

“Just 10 Coppers Young Master but you’ll have to share the carriage with other people…”

When Max walked out of the city gates, several people immediately rushed up to him. Their ferocity had made Max almost swing his saber at them, thinking they were going to attack him, but then he realized they were the carriage pullers and transported the people to forest and from forest to the city.

Max was about to select the 10 Copper Carriage because he only had just one silver coin which his mother had given him for the expenses.

For a Bone Tempering cultivator, a Patriarch of a cultivation at that, to have just one silver coin was quite embarrassing but their family’s financial situation didn’t allow him to take more. Besides, he wasn’t going to spend much anyway.

“Third Young Master… Please wait.” Suddenly a shout echoed and Max paused. When he glanced over, he saw a young man who looked a bit familiar running over.

The young man was dressed in ordinary clothes and looked quite rough from his appearance. He forced his way into the crowd of carriage pullers and said, “Third Young Master, it’s me, Gu Wenfeng. Come with me. I’ll take you to the forest.”

“Wenfeng…” Max muttered then his eyes flashed with recognition. At the same time, his brows raised slightly.

“Alright.” He said after a moment.

All the carriage pullers gave the Gu Wenfeng ugly looks before they retreated and began waiting for someone else to come out.

Max followed Gu Wenfeng to his carriage. Then he looked at him and asked, “Aren’t you Gu Lichen’s descendant?”

Thud!

Gu Wenfeng immediately dropped to his knees and cried out, “Patriarch, please forgive us. Although I don’t feel good saying this, whatever happened was because of Gu Wencheng and my Grandfather. We never wanted to leave the family..”

Max’s expression remained the same, “But you did leave, didn’t you?”

Gu Wenfeng lowered his gaze and nodded, “We did, Patriarch.”

Then he paused for a moment before looking up and saying resolutely, “I’m not asking you to forgive us and take us back into the family. I only ask that you don’t blame all of us because we never wanted to leave… but we had no choice.”

“No choice, huh?” Max stared down at him, “You could have just refused to stay back, couldn’t you have? Or were you worried that without your grandfather, the Gu family wouldn’t treat you all well?”

Gu Wenfeng didn’t respond for quite a while. Then he gritted his teeth and said, “If we hadn’t left, my grandmother would have died.”

“What do you mean?” Asked Max, his brows furrowing.

“Do you remember how my grandfather had gotten injured not long after the late Patriarch passed away?” asked Gu Wenfeng.

Max’s eyes flashed as he answered, “Yes. He was ambushed by Liu family when he had taken your grandmother to her birth village for a visit.”

“Grandfather said he had sensed something amiss before they ambushed him and thus managed to return alive and without many injuries but that’s not what happened.” Gu Wenfeng said.

After a pause, he continued with hatred clear in his eyes, “Yesterday my father and uncles who were very dissatisfied with his decision had an argument with him. Maybe grandfather was no longer able to keep this secret hidden, he revealed what happened that day…”

As Max heard him, his expression slowly darkened and dense murderous intent began to pool deep in his eyes. At the same time, the Garfield Bloodline began stirring, multiplying his rage.

It turned out that Gu Lichen hadn’t noticed anything amiss and was surrounded by the Liu family’s people along with his wife. Because he needed to keep his wife safe and the Liu family had sent three Peak Blood Condensation Elders, they were easily subdued.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the Liu family didn’t plan to kill them and just wanted to control him. They, however, knew he would die before betraying the family, so they fed his wife a strange poison.

The Liu family told him she would die within a month after suffering extreme pain if she isn’t given antidotes on a monthly basis. Since Gu Lichen loved his wife too much to see it happen, he was forced to agree.

“…their first demand was that he wouldn’t act against the Liu family no matter what they did and the second thing they wanted was for him to give them the Spirit Weapon Refining Shop and Madam Gu’s crafting techniques.”

Gu Wenfeng continued, “This was why grandfather had Gu Wencheng help Madam Gu in the shop and learn from her. At the same time he located the deed, however, he wasn’t going to give it to them and was only putting the appearance that he was obeying them.

But how could he have known that Gu Wencheng, thinking grandfather was dissatisfied with the family coupled with the fact that Madam Gu never officially accepted him as her disciple and passed on her real crafting techniques, had begun harboring resentment toward the main family. He suddenly stole the shop’s deed and took it to the Liu family.

Grandfather was angry but he couldn’t do anything. Moreover, maybe Gu Wencheng had told the Liu family that grandfather had never wanted to give them the shop’s deed, they were angry and told grandfather that he needed to break off his relations with the Gu family along with his entire family or they would stop giving him antidotes.

After betraying the family, he also had no face left to continue staying so he left.”

After a moment’s silence, Max asked, “Where are you guys living now? At Liu estate?”

Gu Wenfeng stared at him, trying to see what he was feeling after hearing the truth but couldn’t tell.

Then he heard the question and his face darkened, “No.” He spat out, his face a mask of hatred.

“Oh? Why?” Max asked, surprised. Since the Liu family had gone to such lengths to control him and now that he had betrayed the Gu family, logically, they should have taken him in. He was a peak Blood Condensation cultivator after all, a great asset for them. But they hadn’t done so which was quite baffling.

“It’s because of my grandmother.” answered Gu Wenfeng before explaining, “After she was poisoned, even though Grandfather gave her the antidotes, she began falling unconscious and began to get weaker. She was unconscious almost the entire month recently.”

‘No wonder she has rarely appeared in public in the past year.’ Max mused while Gu Wenfeng continued.

“Clearly despite the antidotes, the poison was still affecting her. When we left the family, she was conscious and told Grandfather that the poison had spread throughout her body and her death was inevitable.

And she no longer wanted to continue living like this and making everyone else suffer along with her, so she requested him to not remain the Liu family’s puppet. Grandfather agreed but how could he be willing to let her die after sacrificing so much. So after settling us into an inn in the upper city, he went to the Liu family to ask for the permanent antidote of the poison. He was going to tell them that he would willingly serve them in exchange. However…”

“He never returned.” Max finished the sentence for him.

“Yes.” Gu Wenfeng nodded with difficulty.

Just one today. Will publish three tomorrow.
