Chapter 980: Nie Haolong

Gu Chen wasn’t only acquainted with Nie Zhanfeng, the owner of Nie family Restaurant, just because his family also had the shop in the same street but also because he had a childhood friend in the Nie family—Nie Haolong.

One day, just two or three years after the Gu Family had settled into Redwood City, Gu Chen was strolling through the market and happened to pass by a shop in the medical street.

There he saw a young man his age, begging the shop owner to let him take some medicine home and he would get him the remaining money he owed the next day. The shop owner, however, refused to accommodate him and threw him out of the shop and the guy landed right before his feet.

Gu Chen took pity on him and gave him the money he was short on after finding out his bed-ridden mother needed this medicine urgently or she would suffer unbearable pain all day.

This guy was Nie Haolong and that small act of kindness slowly turned into a strong friendship between them when Gu Chen realized Nie Haolong was a very sincere guy and that he enjoyed his company.

Whenever Gu Chen was free, he would visit Nie Haolong’s home and bring some nutritious food or something else for his ill mother from his pocket money.

While the Nie family had stopped supporting his family for some reason, they still lived in the Nie Estate so as Gu Chen regularly came to meet him, he became acquainted with a few other people of the Nie Family, one of whom was Nie Zhanfeng, Nie Haolong’s paternal uncle.

“Get him. Don’t let him escape!”

Following the trio, he arrived in a narrow alley which was blocked on the other end.

Nie Haolong stood there, clutching something wrapped in a cloth against his chest, his face pale and blood tricking out from the corner of his lips.

“Are you really not afraid of the Nie family? Even if they don’t care about me, if you beat me, it will be equal to tarnishing the Nie family’s face—” Nie Haolong stared at the trio, a cold look in his eyes.

Before he could finish speaking, however, the man in the middle of the three sneered, “Heh, quit trying to scare us with the Nie Family’s name.”

“First, if your elders find out we beat you, they will blame only you for bringing shame to the family, not us because we are on the right side. Second, even if they blame us, they won’t dare do anything to us because we work for the Mi family.” The man said while pointing to the ‘Mi’ character insignia on his collar.

Rage flashed in Nie Haolong’s eyes when he heard him claim they were on the ‘right side’ but when he heard the latter part, his face fell and helplessness filled him.

“Stop wasting time, Mihi. Let’s beat this bastard up for forcing us to chase him.” the guy on Mihi’s right side said before he rushed Nie Haolong. Mihi and the other guy didn’t hesitate and also rushed forward.

Nie Haolong’s grip on the cloth wrapper tightened while his other hand clenched into a fist as a bout of ruthlessness filled his mind. He wanted to let loose for the first time and beat them to death.

Unfortunately… he was just a weakling in the early Skin Refinement while the weaker of the three was a bit stronger than him.

His fist relaxed and he raised his hand to cover his face so he wouldn’t have too obvious an injury and his mother and elder sister wouldn’t worry too much.

Thud!

Suddenly, instead of their punches and kicks hitting him, he heard the sound of someone jumping down in front of him.

Then…

Slap!

Bang!

Crack!

Three distinct sounds echoed followed by the screams of the trio.

“Ahhh! Who are you?!'”

“I’ll kill you!”

“How dare you injure me?!”

Nie Haolong opened his eyes and removed his hand from the front of his face. Immediately, he saw a tall but man of his age, standing before him with his back facing him.

Given how weak he was, he should have given a sense of frailty, instead, he radiated unmistakable confidence and power.

‘Why is he saving me?’ He couldn’t comprehend why anyone would be willing to save him in this outer region. After all, he was the notorious ‘trash’ of Nie Family, someone without any value.

‘No, Chen would have saved me.’ He thought, remembering his only friend and sadness filled him because from what he heard, he was on his last legs. The thought of losing the only person who cared about him, other than his elder sister and mother, was unbearable to him.

Before he knew it, his eyes became blurry with tears and suddenly, he found thinking that the back of this guy seemed familiar.

“If you don’t want to die… be my guest and come forward.”

Nie Haolong’s eyes widened because this voice was extremely familiar.

“Chen…” He softly called out but felt it couldn’t be him. How could Gu Chen be here and be strong enough to repel these three on his own?

However, when the guy in front of him turned around and smiled at him, he had no choice but to believe he was indeed his friend.

“Long time no see, Haolong.”

“You… How…” He opened his mouth but couldn’t form a coherent sentence.

“Let’s catch up later, let me deal with these three first.” said Max before focusing his gaze on the trio.

His expression cold, he asked, “So what have you decided? Want to fight and see if you can beat me?”

The trio exchanged a look between them and Mihi said grimly, “Have that trash return the thing he stole from our shop and we’ll leave.”

With Gu Chen protecting him, Nie Haolong had regained his composure. When he heard Mihi, he shouted angrily, “You motherfucker, when did I steal anything? It’s you lot who want to steal my treasure.”

Mihi growled at Nie Haolong and was about to retort when Max squinted, “Oh? You want to steal my friend’s treasure?”

Seeing Max become angry, Mihi and his companions’ expressions turned ugly.
