Chapter 630: Enough for Today

Chapter 630: Enough for Today

Enough for Today

For a heartbeat he remained there, hand still resting against the pane, as if part of him hadn’t quite let go of the night yet. Then he turned away and moved toward the small table. His stomach wasn’t growling, but there was a hollow ache beneath his ribs—fatigue, not hunger, the kind that came from carrying too much for too long. He lowered himself into the chair, and the wood creaked under his weight, a quiet, ordinary sound that felt strangely grounding.

He tore off a piece of bread, dipped it into the steaming broth, and brought it to his mouth. The first bite was gentle and warm. Simple. Good. He chewed slowly, eyes unfocused, letting the silence settle around him as if it were something solid. For once, there was nothing he had to decide, no crisis waiting at the edge of his thoughts—just the steady comfort of heat and taste spreading through him.

Halfway through the bowl, his gaze drifted to the wine bottle. He lifted it slightly, watching the dark red liquid curl and roll inside the glass, catching the pale moonlight like liquid embers. The scent rose as he poured—rich, sharp, with a soft sweetness beneath it that hinted at old barrels and long years.

Leon took a sip of his drink.

The wine touched his tongue. It felt really nice. It was smooth. It had a gentle burn. This burn did not hurt him or anything. It just let him know it was there. Then the wine went down his throat. It was warm. It went down slowly. The wine settled in his chest. It felt good. It made something in his chest feel better. He did not even know that something was tight until the wine made it feel better. The wine was really good. It made him feel good too.

He leaned back in the chair. He had one hand resting on the table. The other hand was still holding the glass. The moon was shining outside. The moonlight was coming through the curtains. The night was really quiet. It seemed like the night was watching him too through the thin line of moonlight that was coming into the room. His eyes kept going to the window to look at this thin line of moonlight. The night was being very quiet. It felt like the night was watching the man in return.

The room was really quiet. His thoughts were not. His thoughts came into his mind slowly like someone walking on stone floors. They were slow at first then they just kept going. He could not tune them out. His thoughts were like this because the room was silent and his thoughts about the room and everything else were all he could think about. The room stayed silent. His thoughts, about the room did not.

Vel really needs to have some order, in her life. The thing that Vel needs is order. Vel has to get her life in order.

People really need to know what to do. They need direction to help them make choices. The direction that people need is, like a map that shows them the way to go. People need direction in their lives to stay on the path and make progress.

This city has a lot of problems and a lot of people are waiting for someone to take charge. The city has many cracks and too many eyes are watching and waiting for a leader to come along and make things better. The city needs someone to fix all the cracks.

He let those truths sit there feeling really heavy and something he could not avoid. These were not the thoughts of a king who wears a crown. These were not the dreams of a person who rules a place or a hero. These were the clear thoughts of someone who had seen a lot of bad things a lot of things that were not used and a lot of things that were left to fall apart. The truths of rot and waste and things left to crumble were something he knew well the truths of rot and waste.

Leon breathed out slowly through his nose. He did not want to be something he’s not. Leon was just really tired of seeing everything fall apart. Leon felt like he had seen this happen before. It was getting old.

The wine felt nice in his throat when he took another sip. He did not want the wine to make him forget the noise, in his head he just wanted it to make him feel a little better. The wine helped him to feel like he had room to breathe without feeling like the whole city was pushing down on his ribs. He wanted to be able to breathe and the wine was helping the wine to do that. The city was a place and the wine was making it feel a little lighter.

The meal was almost gone when he started to feel better. The tension in his shoulders was not as bad as before. He picked up the cloth that was next, to the tray and slowly wiped his fingers. He did this in a careful way like it was helping him get his life back together just a little bit.

The quiet felt deep now. His heartbeat even seemed to have slowed down. It was calm and patient. This was different from the fast beat it had. The quiet and his heartbeat were, like this because they had settled into a rhythm.

Leon got up from the chair. Stretched his arms. He rolled his shoulders back and forth. The muscles in his chest got tight. Then they relaxed. This happened because they were tense like a string on a bow. Leon walked across the room. He was walking slowly. His boots made little noise on the floor. Leon kept walking with steps. His boots were quiet, on the floor.

The bed was really big. It had a lot of thick blankets on it. The sheets were dark. The pillows were so soft that they looked like they could cover your whole head. Someone had pulled the covers down for him so that he could get in.

The man did not lie down away. He waited for a bit before he lay down. The man did this because he was not ready to sleep. The man he was still thinking about a lot of things so he did not lie down immediately.

He stood by the window for a while longer doing nothing but being quiet. The window was cold to touch when he put his fingers on it. Then he pulled the curtains shut. The moon was no longer shining in. It slowly went away. Now the only light came from a candle that was burning very low in the corner of the room. It was not bright all. The room was dark. The shadows were all around. They seemed happy to be like they were finally allowed to be still. The candle was the thing that was making any light the moonlight was gone. The room was quiet. The shadows were resting.

The air felt warmer then. It was quieter. It felt more private.

Leon breathed out slowly it was one of those deep breaths that comes from way down, in his chest. The stuff going on in his mind started to calm down his thoughts started to let go one at a time. Then Leon felt his thoughts loosen up even more.

Tomorrow... there’s work to do.

There are many things that I need to do and I have to make a lot of decisions about the things that I need to do. The things that I need to do are waiting for me. I have to make decisions, about the things that I need to do.

The weight of it was pressing against him it was not too heavy. He could feel it. This was a reminder that there were still things that the weight of it demanded he do. He was sitting on the edge of the bed and he ran his hand through his hair his fingers got stuck a little before they came out. The weight of it and its demands were still on his mind as his eyes went back, to the candle he watched the flame shake and then get steady again the candle was staying lit in the dark the flame was holding its place.

He said to himself "That is enough for today." He spoke quietly so his words were almost as soft, as the sound the candle flame made.

He got back, into bed the mattress made a sound under his weight. It was like the mattress was waiting for him too. The blankets fell over his legs and body in a way. The cool sheets touched his skin then they slowly got warm like the bed was getting to know his body. The bed was learning his shape it felt like.

His muscles started to loosen up one at a time. They were not forced to do it. They were not told to do it. The muscles just let go on their own.

His breath was finally steady for the time in what felt like days. He did not have that feeling in his shoulders anymore. The restless humming noise behind his eyes was gone now. The world outside his door with all its noise and demands and constant pulling felt far away at this moment. His breath found a rhythm and that was a big change, for him.

Just him.

The darkness.

The quiet.

The city outside is really quiet now. It is like the city is going to sleep. In my room the candle is giving a warm light. The flame, on the candle is moving a little it bends one time another time and then it just burns steadily. The candle is burning calmly now.

Leon let out a breath it was slow. It took a long time. He was like he was getting rid of something that he did not even know he had inside him. Leon felt like a weight was lifted off him when he did this.

His eyelids got really heavy not all at once. Slowly you know, like when you are extremely tired and you finally feel safe and cozy. The air in the room felt thicker and warmer like it was giving him a hug. It felt protective like it was looking out for him. The air even felt kind, to him which is a weird thing to say about air but that is what it felt like.

He turned a little on the pillow. The fabric touched his cheek. The pillow was really comfortable. It supported his head. The thoughts that were still, in his mind started to feel heavier and heavier. They sank deeper into the pillow and did not seem so sharp anymore. The thoughts just felt heavy, like the pillow that was cradling his head the pillow that was so soft.

The man let out another breath. It was a sound. He was breathing evenly and he was quiet. He seemed to be, at ease.

And just like that...

Sleep was slowly pulling him in. The slow pull of sleep was really taking over him. He was feeling the pull of sleep all, around him. The slow pull of sleep was getting stronger. It was taking him away.

His awareness started to fade. The edges of his mind got really fuzzy. He felt things less and everything just felt warm and dark. Even the small sound of the candle, which was a tiny crackle seemed to be coming from a really long way off. The candle was still burning,. The sound of it was faint like it was somewhere else entirely.

The world just faded away slowly. It was like everything went quiet and still. The world faded gently into the distance.

Leon’s last clear exhale softened into silence.
