Work Can Wait

Forward he moved a small step.

"...I might forget I have work tomorrow."

Laughter, light as dust, moved through the tall room.

Yet not one pulled away.

Not one.

The grand room at Leon’s home shimmered beneath old chandeliers, each one dripping glass that broke the glow into soft pools across plush seating and rich red flooring. Through high arching panes, dusk bled its final gold hues inward, blending with the smell of oiled timber and a hint of night-blooming flowers drifting up from outside. Stillness hung there - thick without being suffocating, charged like breath held too long. As if change waited just beyond sight, already knocking.

There he stood, right in the middle of everything.

Surrounded.

Watched.

Claimed.

A tilt came to Sona’s head, strands of silver falling soft across one shoulder, cool blue eyes alight - not loud, just knowing. A hush lived in her gaze, sharp enough to tease without speaking.

"Work tomorrow?" she echoed, the corner of her lips lifting. "Darling... you say that as if tonight isn’t far more important."

Leon exhaled softly through his nose. "You’re all dangerous when you decide something."

A stillness settled around Cynthia as she sat, poised without trying. One graceful leg folded over the other, slow like time itself paused. Dark hair traced the quiet lines of her face - yet something sharp burned behind her eyes.

"We’re not dangerous," she corrected gently. "We’re patient. There’s a difference." She leaned back slightly, studying him. "And you’ve kept us waiting long enough."

Sona hummed in agreement. "He always thinks he can charm his way out of it."

A corner of Leon’s mouth twitched upward. What kind of container did they mean?

Cynthia glanced at Sona, then back again. "Because telling the truth matters," she said

A silence settled between them then.

A single word came from Kyra, stepping forward just slightly. Though quieter than the voices before hers, what she said landed differently. One breath changed everything.

"You look tired," she murmured. "Or... are you pretending?"

That caught him.

A faint curve touched Leon’s mouth, slow at first. This time, the grin held truth under its edge. "Too sharp," he said, almost quiet

A hush followed Sona as she moved near, cloth whispering over floor fibers. Not quite a smile - yet her voice carried ease when she spoke. Heavy loads rest there once more, she meant about him. Her gaze wandered his features though words stayed light. Hero duties never seem to pause

His eyes moved from one to the other. The air softened then, just slightly. Not jokes now. Truth sat heavier than words.

Finding his voice after the silence, he spoke - "I’m not alone.".

"No," Cynthia replied. "But you act like you are."

A silence held the air where speech had been. The phrase stayed, hanging just out of reach.

Just as quiet threatened to take hold, Leon stepped forward - two measured paces closing the space. His hand found Kyra next, grazing her wrist at first, then settling softly around her waist instead. Not a push nor pull, merely something known by heart.

Into his arms she came, drawn near without a word passing between them.

"I missed you," came his voice, soft and low.

Those green eyes of hers lost their hardness fast, like frost giving way to sun. The wariness just slipped off, undone by something quiet. A different look took hold - gentler, closer to trust. Tension dropped from her stare without a sound.

"I understand," she said.

Stillness held them both, just for a moment. Not even a breath dared break the silence. Between them, the space seemed thin - like glass about to crack under the weight of a single sound.

Her fingers moved on their own, flicking at his coat like something was out of place. You seem tired, she said, voice quieter than before. Truth lived behind the gesture, not in it.

"I haven’t," he admitted. "Not properly."

Stillness took her hands. Was it my doing? That question hung there

His reply came without speaking.

He kissed her.

Slow steps. Never frantic. Still calm. Not loud.

Yet so quiet it hushed every voice nearby.

That kiss never tried to show off. Still, it held its ground. Known, like an old habit. Spoke without sound - lips meeting in silence.

Out of nowhere, her hands tightened on his shirt. Not letting go, really holding on now, he kept one arm around her hips while air filled his lungs with something familiar. That soft smell from her hair mixed with heat coming through where his hand rested - way deeper than any moment before.

Her forehead stayed on his as they began to separate.

"You always disappear like that," she murmured. "And then you come back like nothing happened."

"I was afraid," he said, voice low enough that only she could hear. "If I stayed any longer... I wouldn’t have left at all."

A moment, soft and unguarded, crossed her face. Not once did she step back.

Then their lips stopped touching -

The others moved.

A chair creaked under him just as she arrived, slipping into place at his side. Firelight strands of her hair touched his shoulder - soft, warm almost. Her mouth lifted then, not fast, each part of the motion meant.

"Did you think I’d wait patiently?" she whispered.

A breath came out slow, just through the nostrils, heavy with what was coming. "Always diving in without thinking," he said under his voice

"Exactly."

Into him she leaned, her mouth finding his. Then came the quiet after.

Hungry.

Possessive.

That kiss landed like a claim stamped in heat. Not a pause, never sorry. Into his dark hair her hands drove, yanking him near till his breathing snagged, one palm slamming down on her leg just to stay upright.

A breath slipped out - not quite joy, not quite caution.

A soft thread of heat still linked them when she stepped back, each catching their breath just a little. The air held something undone.

"This is just starting," she murmured, eyes glowing. "Be ready for night."

He repeated the question about nighttime prep, his voice shaking despite effort to stay calm.

Just as his mouth began to open, something shifted beside him.

Faster than a glance, Kyra moved without asking. Then silence followed her steps.

Over the edge of the couch she went, pressing her lips against his at an angle, teasing yet fierce. Soft threads of green touched his face as they slid along his jawline. Her fingers dug into his shoulder - no tenderness there, though not pain either - firm like a statement without words.

Her voice brushed close, soft on his mouth. Tonight belongs to us, she let slip between breaths.

A soft chuckle escaped him near her lips. Could he even speak up?

Her gaze held his, steady but soft. Not a word more than that one

Something mischievous hung in the air. Not just that - beneath it, a quiet release, almost as if a weight had slipped away.

"You came back," she added, softer now. "That’s enough."

A change crossed his face. Up came his hand, thumb tracing the curve of her cheek. Always, he meant it

Watch yourself, Rias remarked with a soft voice, yet her eyes turned sharp. Words like those have weight they tend to stay

"They’re meant to," he replied.

A hush settled around each syllable, firm in its pace. Stillness clung to them, unwavering.

Forward moved Sona now, her hair like liquid metal under the hanging lights. Light played along each strand, framing her in something near myth - if you ignored everything else. Where Syra blazed loud, Sona breathed quiet - yet just as burning underneath. Every motion held back by invisible strings, precision shaping every second - and somehow amplifying what waited beneath.

Footsteps fading, she stood close enough to feel his breath.

"Don’t look at me like that," she murmured.

What kind of thing? he said, but quieter now.

"Like you’re trying to stay composed."

A soft laugh slipped out. "I’m keeping it together."
