Chapter 612- Revival of the World Tree & Aurelius (11)
Chapter 612: Chapter 612- Revival of the World Tree & Aurelius (11)
Thus, the battle of Ashen Gate began.
The battlefield and the ruins would later be investigated by the first expedition teams who voyaged out of the continent of Valdonia and set foot in a new land.
However, that story belongs to the future.
Right now, these leaders of the allied race fought with all their might for the continued survival of their people.
BOOOOOOM!!
Thane Ironmantle slammed his hammer on the ground, and the earth answered his call. The battlefield rose. Huge spikes of jagged rock shot toward the advancing Titan.
"Come, you metal abomination!"
Thane roared, his beard flaring without any wind. The six legged Titan’s crimson eyes locked onto him. Gears whirred and artillery rose from its spines, lighting up with devastating energy.
But before it could fire, Thane slammed his hammer into the ground again. Thick fissures spread and quickly swallowed one of the Titan’s legs.
The ground beneath the Titan collapsed. The sudden change in balance caused the attack to miss.
Thane did not miss the opportunity and attacked again.
He leapt. A dwarf soared like a meteor and came down on the Titan with his hammer. The scene was like an ant trying to topple an elephant, comical and bizarre.
Nevertheless, it was this scene that caused the most damage to the Malice Engine.
BANG...
The impact shattered the extremely dense and hard armor plating, causing the Titan to falter and the earth to crack for hundreds of meters.
Whirr...
Gears rotated, and a barrage of crimson beams was fired toward Thane at point blank range. If it had been anyone else, they might have been unable to respond in time.
However, Thane was the mightiest warrior of his race.
In that split second, he defended himself with remarkable skill. Stones formed from granules and created a spherical defense layer around him. The beams melted the rocks. However, Thane was able to get out of the way in time.
Then he laughed loudly and struck again.
A bizarre sight, where a dwarf fought while manipulating the earth to his will.
Elsewhere, the ground had already turned to ice. Snowflakes were falling like rain, suppressing the wildly surging demonic energy.
Amid the ice, Skadi Winter slowly walked toward the Titan class Malice Engine. With every step she took, her size grew until she was more than two hundred feet tall.
Donned in impressive looking armor and with an ice axe in hand, she looked like the very incarnation of a war goddess.
Ancient Giants, just as their name implied, had the ability to grow in size, becoming stronger and fiercer. Still, compared to the Titan class Malice Engine in front of her, she still seemed small.
"Mighty ancestors of the past, please grant strength to your daughter."
Skadi raised her ice axe and silently prayed.
Then, in the next second, she charged toward the Titan.
The sight of her speeding toward the mechanical abomination was a sight to behold.
The serpentine Titan lunged, its segmented blades spinning violently. Its size and the speed at which the blades rotated caused the very air and space to distort violently. Anything and everything in the path of those blades was erased from existence.
Facing such power, Skadi did not back down. She swung her axe, and a beautiful blue arc bloomed in the air.
CRASSHHHH...
A fierce shockwave that blew the surrounding mountains spread from the point of collision. Then came a screeching noise of metal grinding against metal. Light burst out, and sparks as big as an adult human flew out everywhere.
The spectacle was a sight to see.
Nonetheless, the stalemate did not last long.
The Serpentine Titan continued to push forward, the crimson lights in its sockets becoming glaring. It seemed like Skadi was losing in a head-on battle.
Of course, that was true if one looked only at the surface. However, the perceptive ones could see that as the Titan proceeded forward, its blades were slowly losing speed.
Frost continued to accumulate at the edges of its blades and around its joints, slowing its movements.
"Freeze!!"
Skadi shouted, and at that moment, a brilliant frosty light burst out of her axe, painting everything around them in blue and white.
When the light slowly died down, the movements of the Serpentine Titan had stopped, and it was frozen in place. Even from far away, one could see a huge serpentine ice statue releasing freezing cold energy.
Having stopped her enemy, Skadi took a deep breath. However, her face did not ease.
If Titan-Class Malice Engines were so easy to deal with, then their allied army would have long since won the war.
CRACK...
The eyes of the Malice Engine glowed, and cracks started forming across the surface of the ice. Just as Skadi thought, the Serpentine Titan was not completely frozen.
BOOM...
The next second, the ice shattered, and the Titan was free again.
Whirr...
Mechanical noise sounded out, and the serpentine Titan changed shape. Of course, it still held the shape of a serpent.
However, now black lightning came out of its body, and numerous blades protruded from its tail.
The Serpentine Titan lashed out with its tail. Skadi faced the attack head-on.
While Thane and Skadi took on one Titan each, the other two were left to the remaining leaders of the allied army.
"Hold the line. Don’t let the two groups unite!"
The human leader shouted, brandishing his sword and unleashing one technique and skill after another.
Unlike the Cienthrope, Therianthrope, and other demi human races, humans did not have inherent abilities that made them extremely strong in one area, like enhanced agility or manipulating earth like the dwarves. No, humans did not have such gifts.
What they did have was the power to adapt.
Unlike other races, humans were versatile, and their talents allowed them to master all kinds of techniques and skills, even those from other races.
The human leader displayed his versatile power and worked excellently with the demi-human races to stop the two Malice Engines.
Of course, the leaders of the other races were no slouches, and their power was nothing to scoff at.
No one was falling behind the others.
However, if one had to point out who was weaker, or rather lacking a certain decisive factor in their attack, it would be the elf leader.
The latter notched an arrow and fired it at the Titan’s joint, causing an explosion. However, other than slowing it down for a second, it did not have much effect. This made the elf leader’s face turn grim, and he muttered disheartenedly.
"If only the World Tree were still around, then our race would not have been this weak."
Remembering the power his ancestors had once told him about, he could only sigh. Though he did not dwell on regret for long and started firing again.
The Titans roared in mechanical fury, and the battlefield descended further into chaos.
Four Titan class Malice Engines against a handful of allied leaders. The scene that unfolded next was nothing short of legendary.
The leaders stood tall, displaying the powers they had cultivated over the years. They fought, bled, and even got seriously injured numerous times.
However, with unbending will, they continued to rise and refused to fall.
Under the relentless will of the leaders, they were slowly starting to gain an edge.
The first Titan fell, then the second, and third and fourth followed.
It seemed like victory was just around the corner.
That said, victory did not come easily. Their breathing was ragged, their armor shattered, and their bodies were bleeding heavily.
They looked like people who already had one foot in the grave.
Yet even as their bodies trembled from exhaustion, the battle or rather the war was far from over.
From the horizon that had turned black, an endless swarm marched toward the plain. Their sheer number was mind-boggling.
And then there was that thing, moving with the rhythm of the collapsing mountain.
Another Titan class Malice Engine appeared in the distance.
Seeing this scene, Thane leaned on the handle of his hammer and laughed heartily.
"Well, would you look at that? Anyone care to bet who kicks the bucket first?"
"If it’s you, dwarf, I’ll make sure they carve ’short but loud’ on your grave."
Skadi snorted, having reverted to the size of an average human.
"I give the elf two minutes before he collapses," the human leader smirked.
Hearing this, the elf leader rolled his eyes.
"At least when I die, I won’t smell like whores and alcohol."
Their comments were sharp and racist, even so. However, such jokes evoked laughter from the surrounding crowd and lifted the mood.
Because death was coming, and they were all ready to meet it standing.
The swarm of Malice Engines had surrounded them like a black carpet, and just when it seemed like death was inevitable, it was then...
The sky exploded.
A sonic boom tore across the heavens, and an enormous shadow emerged from the distance.
