Chapter 670- Baccarat (2)
Chapter 670- Baccarat (2)
One hundred and fifty years ago... there was a kingdom in the western continent called Baccarat. It was a prosperous nation known for its fertile lands and healing springs.
Their people were leaders in potions and medicine creation. It was said no famine or disease could touch that land.
But one day... all of that changed. A sudden outbreak of infection plagued the land"...
Starting from a mild fever, it quickly escalated to hallucination.
Everyone listened intently. Not all knights were privy to the history of mankind.
"If it were just that, the world wouldn’t have given that thing that title. Within a couple of days of its appearance, the nation of Baccarat collapsed. The infection became uncontrollable, even with their leading edge medical knowledge, the nation could not fight it"...
"From an affluent country to collapse... it all took just seven days. By the time the other nations got wind of it and could aid, the nation was gone, and so was that thing. However, from that day, the disaster that took the lives of millions of people was given the title... the Nightmare of Baccarat."
Listening to Vanessa’s story, Kevin subconsciously gripped [Tiamat].
[Don’t. That thing is not something you can deal with at your level. You need a higher master of Aether and increase your Aether stat].
BOOM... In the front, the hand slammed onto the [Dawn Shield] once again. A monstrous shockwave swept through the land.
Protecting everyone with her skill, Vanessa looked at the two heroes beside her.
"You said your attacks are not causing enough damage, right?"
The two Heroes glanced at her briefly before nodding grimly.
The Saintess narrowed her eyes. "I think I know why."
"You figured out its weakness?"
Vanessa did not explain. She took a deep breath and spoke in a firm voice. "I need you two to stall it once more. Confine it in one area no matter what."
"Understood." The two Heroes exchanged looks before nodding. Without another word, they charged forward again.
One wielded a blazing spear engulfed in scarlet flames while the other continuously unleashed gigantic sword arcs that carved apart the collapsing mountains.
The flaming spear struck downward like a meteor, piercing through the creature’s palm and pinning it briefly against the mountain.
At the same time, the swordsman Hero leapt high into the air and unleashed dozens of intersecting sword lights. The attacks exploded across the battlefield like a storm of destruction.
Yet despite their overwhelming attacks, the damage the creature suffered was minimal.
While the two stalled Baccarat, Vanessa turned toward the gathered knights behind her. Numerous Level 9 Extreme Knights stood there, their auras resolute.
"[Blessed Armament]."
Vanessa raised her staff. Gentle holy light blossomed outward. The next second, a vast wave of pale radiance spread across the battlefield, and every weapon on the knights started glowing with a pale white light.
The knights looked at their weapons and immediately understood what was going on. The pale white light was holy energy. The Saintess had coated their weapons with Holy Energy.
"Listen carefully, everyone." Vanessa’s voice rang across the rows of knights.
"Now that thing has shown up, we cannot let it escape. If it slips away from us, there is no telling what kind of disaster it will unleash. The plague of Baccarat nearly erased an entire kingdom from history. If that infection spreads among the camps of the Dawnbringers..."
She did not complete her sentence; there was no need to. Everyone understood from the story what kind of monstrosity the thing titled Nightmare of Baccarat was.
If even one infected knight returned to the camps, the Allied Knight Order itself could collapse from within.
The expressions of the Extreme Knights hardened instantly. Then, with a war cry, they charged towards the hand.
The Fourth Division exploded into motion. All kinds of skills, sword styles, and transcendent states were displayed, lighting up the entire canyon.
From this battle, one could see the power of the Fourth Division of Dawnbringers.
Even though it was just the logistics division, one still couldn’t underestimate it.
The holy coating Vanessa applied to their weapons proved devastatingly effective. Even though the creature healed from its wounds extremely fast, every strike now burned the creature’s flesh.
Vanessa continued to provide buff and support while maintaining the [Dawn Shield] that protected everyone. Simultaneously, she was also preparing some kind of skill.
Meanwhile, Level 8 knights and below stood in formation, ready to respond to any reinforcement the enemy might have.
The battle raged. A disaster-class entity was called a disaster class because it possessed the power to destroy a nation.
Even after suffering under the attacks of numerous knights, the thing, like a cockroach, refused to die.
Nevertheless, under the combined attacks of so many knights it was pinned to an area, unable to get out.
BOOM... the two heroes unleashed their skills. That moment where it was severely weakened was all Vanessa needed. She closed her eyes and raised her staff towards the heavens.
Her silver hair floated with specks of holy light. Holy power erupted from her body like an endless tide.
The sky and land brightened.
"By the authority of the Sacred Light, I bind thee... [Blessed Seal]."
In that instant, a holy magic circle manifested above the battlefield. It was enormous, with layers of rotating ancient runes. Everyone instinctively lifted their heads, feeling the vast amount of holy energy within the skill.
The two heroes and all the extreme knights immediately understood what the Saintess was planning. They increased the ferocity of their attacks, cornering the Baccarat in one place.
Knights weren’t the only ones who sensed something. The colossal hand, sensing danger to its existence, screeched. That’s right, screeched.
For the first time, the disaster-class entity displayed wariness. Its thousand-plus eyes all focused on the woman casting the skill. It resisted fiercely, trying to break out of encirclement.
However, it was too late.
Chains of radiant light descended from the sky and tightly wrapped around the hand. As these chains were made of condensed holy energy, they scarred and burned the flesh of Baccarat, oozing demonic energy.
The thousand plus eyes blinked around in anxiousness, and it thrashed wildly to get out.
Just then, the seal hovering in the sky fell quickly, encompassing the hand in its brilliance. Everyone watched in awe at the Saintess’s skill.
No wonder they say holy energy was the best counter against demonic energy. The layer of demonic energy the entity was wrapped in provided no resistance and was instantly purified.
[Blessed Seal].
One of Saintess Vanessa’s strongest abilities. Although it had not reached the realm of an Ultimate Skill, among normal skills, it stood at the absolute pinnacle.
And its effect was terrifying.
[Blessed Seal] did not merely just restrain the opponent; it purified the power within the entity.
Although it was useless against humans, against demons who were the very incarnation of evil, it continuously weakened them until nothing but ashes remained.
Even if it was a disaster-class entity, once fully trapped, death was inevitable.
Vanessa understood her skill better than anyone. Which was precisely why she did not relax. Her silver hair fluttered wildly as she continuously poured mana into the gigantic seal.
Sweat trickled down her pale neck. The burden of maintaining such a large-scale divine art was enormous.
The [Blessed Seal] was just over Baccarat. It looked like this was the end.
Though at that moment, Vanessa suddenly narrowed her eyes. Something felt wrong.
The colossal hand was wiggling strangely and then started dissolving. At first Vanessa thought that purification was working.
However, glancing at it properly, it appeared that the thing was... separating.
"What?"
Before Vanessa could understand what was going on, the colossal arm burst into an endless black tide.
Like a collapsing castle, it scattered into bits everywhere. In front of everyone’s eyes, what appeared was...
Screech screech screech screech... Rats, hundreds of thousands of them.
The battlefield instantly transformed. A sea of grotesque rats flooded the area, looking at the knights with their crimson eyes.
The knights froze. The sheer number of the rats was enough to make one’s scalp tingle.
Vanessa looked at the scene with shock. Although she read about the story of the collapse of Baccarat and the appearance of the Nightmare of Baccarat, what she didn’t know was that this Disaster-Class entity known as Baccarat... was never a giant creature.
The ’hand’ possessed no bones because the hand itself was merely a colony. A massive colony formed from hundreds of thousands of plague rats huddling together to form one grotesque shape.
Vanessa’s pupils contracted, realizing something. "No wonder, the damage we inflicted was minimal."
Now that you think about it, it made sense. The creature had regenerated endlessly because individual damage meant nothing to it.
Destroying several thousand rats among hundreds of thousands was meaningless.
When one portion of them got injured, they switched places and regenerated, then switched places with the ones injured again.
This repeated again and again, giving the illusion of Baccarat possessing limitless regeneration.
