Chapter 739: A MYSTERY
Chapter 739: A MYSTERY
I stood there anxiously, waiting for what mother had to say.
She had turned down the offer so many times for no explicit reason other than she wanted to stay and work on her own.
Working under the pack house meant she probably wouldn’t help other people.
Only strictly members of the pack.
“If I do agree to work in the pack.” Mother began as if reading my mind. “I want to know that I would be allowed to help heal other people who aren’t in the pack.”
Martha took in a very deep breath.
After about a minute. “I’ll run it by the pack Lycan and see what he has to say. But I assure you I’ll do my best tot make sure he insists.”
Mother seemed skeptical.
I gently walked up to her and took her by the arm, guiding her aside.
“Mother, we need this.” I urged.
“The entire house won’t even be able to cover the one million your father gambled.” She said a hint of anger very much in her voice.
“We have some jewels don’t we?” I asked her. “We can give them those for the mean time and plead as we slowly complete the payment. A steady income from the pack house would help us.”
She turned away and I gently turned her back to face me.
“Please mother.” I pleaded.
She seemed so skeptical and unsure.
As though she was terrified of something else.
Eventually she gave in with a sigh. “Alright.”
I smiled weakly.
She turned away to face Martha. “Okay. I’ll take the Job.”
Martha clapped her hands in glee.
“That’s wonderful.” She said in excitement. “You can simply come right away, just so you can treat him. You can come for your items later.”
I remembered the last chaos I had caused with the boy who was probably Aston’s relative and flinched.
“Don’t worry.” I said quickly. “You go ahead. I’ll pack up all the necessary things we need in a cart and bring them to the pack house later in the evening.”
“I’ll need your help.” Mother said.
“You’ll be fine.” I assured her trying my best to avert any chaos.
The last thing she needed was discovering that I had gotten into trouble in the pack house.
Especially not after what father had just done.
“I can’t leave you alone here.” Mother insisted. The fear in her eyes.
I knew what she was worried about.
Me being left here and the boys coming in.
Finding me alone.
I shivered at the thought of it.
“I’ll be fine.” I insisted. “The neighborhood pack watch should be active tonight anyways. I’ll be fine. Trust me.”
She had her lips pressed in a tight line.
She didn’t seem too convinced.
“Ruby you can come with your father. I’m sure he can keep you safe. If that’s what you are worried about.” She chipped in.
Mother’s face became thunderous.
I could see the rage in her eyes.
Father had done a terrible job of keeping even himself safe Talkless of us.
“He won’t be coming with us.” Mother announced.
Marie blinked in amazement. “Oh?”
“He will stay here. It’s just going to be Ruby and I.” Mother declared firmly.
“Oh alright.”
I assisted mother in packing up her things that would suffice in helping with her healing.
“You know the things I need.” She said as she placed her hand on my shoulder once they were outside.. “Pack them up along with the rest of my healing items and charms. Make sure they are secure. Anything else, I’ll come by tomorrow and pick.”
I nodded. “Yes mother.”
She gave a sad look at me and then to the house and back to me.
“Stay safe Ruby. Make sure you lock all the doors. Everything.” She said sharply in a low voice.
“What about father?” I asked worried.
“Your father has chosen his fate.” She said coldly. “Let him lie on it.”
“Where would he sleep? If we lock the doors?”
I knew what he had done was wrong.
Terrible.
But it felt like much cruel leaving him to his own fate.
He was my father.
Her husband.
“There are repercussions to every action we make. Good or bad. Your father has chosen the bad time and time again. He had always gotten away with it. This is where I cross the line. I should have crossed it off a long time ago.” She told me.
I felt a cold chill at words.
Not just in reference to father, but also to myself.
I was now worried that what I had done at the pack would come back to haunt me.
I truly hoped it didn’t.
She climbed her horse and I watched her Martha ride off in a cloud of dust.

Once mother had left, I turned and went in to the house to begin packing up.
I went first to mine because I didn’t have much to pack.
I put up my things in my large trunk.
Folded them neatly and packing up the few prized possessions I had.
Once I was done with my room, I went to the only other room in the house.
My parents bedroom.
They always had a lot of things in their room.
When I had younger, all I wanted to do was sleep there.
But as I had grown up, I had slowly asked for my own independence.
Now looking around, I longed for the nostalgia of normalcy.
Before father had lost his leg.
I sighed and went on packing things.
I packed mother’s dresses.
Her charms, healing essentials, books.
Everything she would need.
I had learned under her long enough to know what was going to be important and wasn’t.
As I went through her things packing up, I pulled out the drawers.
Fishing for anything I had missed.
I didn’t find.
As I pulled back, the drawer fell and I heard something within it fall.
I quickly picked it up, but by the time I looked in, there was nothing in.
I lifted the heavy drawer and shifted it.
It sounded like something was inside.
I set my hands inside the drawer and discovered it was a false bottom.
I knocked and tried to set my fingers through until I felt a latch.
I pulled it and it came off.
Right before me were some items. I had never seen
