Chapter 217: Prophecy Comes True
Chapter 217: Prophecy Comes True
If natural disasters hadn’t struck, they could have gone to the Food Safety Office or the Health Bureau. But now, these departments no longer exist. The neighborhood committee is overwhelmed with its own tasks; how could they manage such matters?
As they discussed, Yang Jie suddenly suggested, “What about the police station? They first dismantled the Dragon Slaying Society, then took down two private bases and returned the confiscated supplies to the people. This requires cooperation from many departments. Even if it’s not their jurisdiction, as long as they tell us which department to approach or inform the relevant departments, it’s better than us wandering around aimlessly.”
Both of them found this approach feasible. “You’re quite smart,” Yang Weimin complimented.
He Tianming added, “Old Yang, how about we go there tomorrow? If this turns out to be true, it might save many lives. We’ve both had good times before; we even recently received welfare benefits from the municipal government. Keeping quiet about this might weigh on our conscience.”
“Okay, let’s go tomorrow and take some dried squid with us.”
After sealing the deal, Yang Weimin asked He Tianming, “Jiang Ning saved my life. What do you think would be a suitable token of gratitude?”
In these difficult times, there’s no household that had it easy. The Yang family barely had enough to eat, with both father and son as thin as rails. They didn’t have anything decent to offer as gratitude.
He Tianming, their old friend of two years, didn’t beat around the bush and spoke his mind, “I don’t think Jiang Ning is someone who cares about material rewards. Instead of showing up with a gift to thank her, she might prefer not to be bothered. Prepare some sweet potatoes, give them to her if you run into her on the way. If she refuses, don’t insist. It’s the thought that counts. If she ever needs help in the future, it’s never too late to repay the favor.”
Yang Weimin also felt that Huo Yishen and Jiang Ning seemed to prefer keeping to themselves. No, to be precise, they wanted to maintain a certain distance from others. In this apocalypse, without old acquaintances, who dared to get too close to whom? Their approach wasn’t wrong.
…
After several days of insufficient rest, Chief Ling arrived at the office close to noon.
As his assistant briefed him on the work, he remembered something before leaving, “Chief Ling, two strange men came today. They brought half a piece of dried squid, claiming they might have been infected with an ancient virus and nearly died from it. This matter doesn’t fall under the jurisdiction of the police station. But ever since receiving two consecutive mysterious letters, Chief Ling has been concerned about such matters. He instructed that if anything related to the ‘prophecy’ arises, he should be informed immediately. The ancient virus is part of the prophecy; he didn’t expect it to actually happen.
“Where are they now?”
“They came early and left already.”
“Did you tell them which department to go to?”
“I did,” the assistant replied. “Ever since the first report and the successful dismantling of the Dragon Slaying Society, the relevant departments have taken the second letter we submitted seriously. In fact, the research department discovered anomalies a few days ago and has been sampling and studying them. However, the final results are not yet available.”
As he spoke, Chief Ling muttered to himself, “These two letter senders are truly mysterious. Not only did they deliver the reports themselves, but they also did the same with the prophecy letters. But why did one of them only predict an earthquake and then disappear? While the other continued for a decade. Strange. If they can truly predict, why didn’t they mention hail or boiling rain? There are too many mysteries that are hard to understand. And why do they all prefer to come to the police station? They themselves are overwhelmed with their own tasks.”
“What are you complaining about?” Chief Ling glanced at him. “Haven’t you heard the slogan? When in trouble, find the police. If the common people don’t come to us, who will they turn to?”
The assistant quickly responded, “Yes, yes, yes.”
Just as he was about to leave, he was stopped by his superior, who asked, “How’s the recruitment of security patrol officers going?”
“It’s going alright. We’ve had quite a few people signing up recently.” With the tough guys who raided private underworld bases recently apprehended, there had been more applicants.
“We’re severely short-staffed. Select some skilled individuals from the security patrol team and promote them to officers, bypassing the regular process.”
…
At the agreed time, Jiang Ning went to the trading street to find Sharp mouthed monkey.
At the trading street, the sale of seawater was still bustling, and there were also many vendors selling dried seafood.
Jiang Ning glanced at several shops. Most of the dried seafood looked normal, but there were also some extraordinary ones.
People still bought them, but those who came to the trading street were mostly survivors from the lower class, so there weren’t many buyers relatively speaking.
As for whether eating them would be fatal, no one could say for sure.
Jiang Ning felt a heavy heart, but she wasn’t foolish enough to intervene unless she didn’t care about her life.
Even if she didn’t care about her life, nobody would believe her.
As she stood amidst the crowd, even with a mask on, Sharp mouthed monkey managed to find her successfully. “Sis.”
Jiang Ning was curious. “You guys aren’t selling seawater and dried goods anymore?”
Sharp mouthed monkey looked around cautiously, then pulled her aside. “Sis, ever since the Tang Corporation’s seafood business went under suspicion, the boss stopped doing this business.”
It wasn’t that they stopped, but rebuilding connections wasn’t easy. The boss went to Xiangshan and Lingding, both place are abundant in seafood, but the journey was longer, and it took time to assess the character of the other party to avoid being swindled.
“We haven’t collaborated yet, but trouble comes.”
“What happened?”
“Seafood is divided into three grades. Overfishing depleted the seafood in Lingding, but after the tsunami, seafood suddenly became abundant, with large and plump specimens first supplied to the upper class. As a result, some incidents occurred, and several people in the wealthy areas died…”
The boss had a keen sense of smell and sensed trouble with seafood, so he cut off this source of income.
“Sis, we may engage in buying and selling, but we never earn dirty money. If the boss doesn’t do it, he doesn’t allow us to do it privately.”
Sharp mouthed monkey reminded Jiang Ning, “Nowadays, everything is in trouble. Seafood can’t be eaten, there’s hail and boiling rain, and earthquakes might strike anytime. Sister, you must be careful. I still want to continue trading with you.”
Sigh, life was too hard.
He didn’t want to imagine a day when he couldn’t find his sister, or worse, when his sister couldn’t find him.
“Alright, just because of what you said, you’ll be the first one I contact for business from now on.”
Getting back to business, Jiang Ning asked, “Have you found the seeds I wanted?”
“If you want it, I’d find it even if it means going through fire and water.”
Sharp mouthed monkey took out two bags of seeds from his bag. “It took quite an effort, but these are all seeds from two years ago. Five pounds of rice seeds, five pounds of glutinous rice seeds. Take them back and see if they sprout.”
If it weren’t for the fact that rice cultivation required a lot of water, the seeds might not have been preserved.
He was somewhat excited. What would his sister exchange for?
Jiang Ning assessed them. The weight was good, and the seeds hadn’t been damaged by pests.
She took out ten pounds of stuff from her bag. “I won’t let you suffer any loss.”
Sharp mouthed monkey looked at it and instantly grinned…
